LED Tattoos and You

"Tattoos: they're cool and all, but they aren't light-up enough. Enter the implantable LED array. Now that skull & crossbones you've been considering can have blinking red eyes. You'll be the talk of the pirate party!

The LED arrays were developed by John Rogers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and they can twist and stretch by as much as 75%. Coated in thin silicon rubber, they're also waterproof and safe to implant under the skin. That means that you could, in theory, spell out your name in flashing lights under the skin of your back.
Count me in. I want a real sweet fire tattoo coming out from the top of my pants with red and yellow LED highlights that flicker when I dance seductively. "But GW, how's an LED supposed to know when you're dancing seductively?" I'M NEVER NOT, FOOL!

Move over tattoos: implantable LEDs light up your skin [dvice]

Thanks to Aaron and Stephanie, who are both holding out for implantable lasers. Hoho -- now you're talking!"

Anyway think about what you could do with LED lights under your skin. Come to you yet? Good. Now the question is, are you willing to go through the pain?

Hell yeah! :D

I wonder how it's powered and if you can turn them off.

Tsyal Makto 10-20-2010 02:11 AM

For now, probably some kind of wireless battery (like the abiocor heart). Though in the future it will probably be powered biologically, though when that will be, I have no idea.

Still it would be awesome to do if they don't stand out (like bumps). I would totally go with a Na'vi design.

^ this! :)

Yea I was curious about the bumps... I dont know about anything circuit-wise underneath my skin though haha I'm still getting the UV tattoo :) very interesting though!

Probably in the future each LED will be independently implanted, and can run directly off the metabolism, so no wires would be needed.

I'm wondering how they would implant complex patterns using wired LEDs. Do they just...remove...an entire section of skin? :S

A few highpowerd ones in the fingertips would be very, VERY, helpful at times.

It is an interesting idea. The finger tips would be good, but I want them in my forehead. When I'm out in the field I pretty much always wear a LED headlamp when the sun is down. It would be so much more convenient.

I was thinking about that, if they're under the skin, they may bleed down into your eyelids. Might make it more difficult to see rather than easier.

I think a Na'vi design would be better in glow-in-the-dark or ultraviolet.
Still an interesting concept...
Maybe do a 8-bit shiny mario!

By the time they are practical, probably biologically. Would have to be some kind of battery right now though.

I disagree about UV. Glow in the dark would be better, but UV wouldn't work for me, I go to plenty of dark places but not really any with UV. I would much prefer markings that will work anywhere :) - plus them being potentially able to be switched on/off is a nice feature.
