What if Jake had been a woman and Neytiri a man?
In Avatar (and in most of the films that is said to have inspired Avatar) the protagonist that crosses over from the western civilisation into another culture is a man. One of the reasons (or perhaps the main reason) to this crossing over is his love to a native woman. The other way around, that a western woman falls in love with a native man, and crosses over into his culture, is much more unusual in films. But let us just play with the thought in the case of Avatar. Just imagine if the Jake character had been a woman and the Neytiri character had been a man? Would people have viewed Avatar in the same way, and would it have become as popular?
By the way, if you want to see a film about a Euro American woman, falling into love with a native (Native American) man and crossing over into his culture there is Stolen Women, Captured Hearts from 1997. It can be seen in its entirety on Youtube. Stolen Women: Captured Hearts - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
In all seriousness though, I don't think it would have been as popular. |
That would be just fine.

I don't see what a difference it would make, women are just as capable of being ayskxawng and men of Seeing...
I doubt they'd still be called Jake and Neytiri though :P |
:xD: I think we had this discussion before...
...and recall someone having an amazing idea about the script. :P |

I think.. I'm kinda with Advent here.
As in, the "man from another world" falling in love with a preoccupied woman is a very effective love story. It was the same in Titanic and I cried lakes. |
Actually, I think it would have been more interesting if Jake was a woman (Jake short for Jacqueline?). Still keep the character as a former-Marine who falls in love with the warrior culture and all of that. Because, women can be warriors, too, and that would have been a really interesting aspect to the movie. White man going over to the 'natives' is really a well-worn trope, and not imaginative at all.
Or, you know, change Jake to being a woman and keep Neytiri as a female. Just saying. |

I think it'd work. I would suggest Amanda Tapping for the female role of Jake (aka Jackie?). She did well as a military minded woman in the SG1 series. Just saying. I'm sure there's plenty of other candidates as well.
