Well said :)

Also, Ketuwong is far better than outsider or lurker, I definitely agree about especially 'outsider' not being very welcoming. Technically, I consider a lurker someone who hasn't posted, rather than posted a few times :P

Agree'd, I think that i we substitute Ketuwong for lurker that list is about perfect, unless someone else has some spectacular Idea none of us has thought of :P

oh and I also think that The Na'vi words should have the english terms next to them because not everyone speaks Na'vi well enough to understand them. (I don't :P)

I agree. There's one problem with these new ranks... I have no idea what they mean. :D

Exactly, I think the ranks should be in English, and then next to it it should have the na'vi version :)

You guys are right about that. But I think the ranks that are in Na'vi fit the theme of the site since it's about Avatar.

How about Eywa Makto for males, and Aihwa Makto for females?

:awesome:

True, but you need both, If you can't read and/or understand it whats the point of having it?

I could put the word pancake in like some random language and people would be like "uhh imma assume that that means something relevant and cool"

Gotta be able to understand what you just achieved or else its pointless :P

(which is also why I said we should have both English and Na'vi next to each other ;) )

Maybe if there were a thread made about the new ranks on the Forum News Section, explaining what each rank meant so no one'd be confused...

Yeah but there's like 15+ of them who's going to remember all that? and besides I don't wanna have to switch to a new thread to remember what my rank means.

I guess it depends on the person though :/

Banefull 10-29-2010 11:15 PM

Most of them are already common words. The majority of posters are already familiar with avatar and would know what "pali makto" or "palulukan makto" means.

The only ranks I see that could potentially have some issues are:
Ketuwong
Numeyu
'Eylan
Nawmtu
Karyu
Lekye'ung

So its really only 6 ranks. If someone wants to know what their rank means, they can look it up on a thread or the navi dictionary in a few seconds. If anything, it encourages people to learn Navi. Putting the English translations would take some of the "fun" out of the post ranks.

You also have to remember the horde of people who either have no interest in speaking Na'vi or don't have the time. Not everyone wants to run a definition search to understand what they "are" in a forum.

and making the assumption that the "majority" of posters know what something means is also a fault. Assumptions are almost always wrong, same with generalizations. If your building anything with a flow of people your going to want to focus on the weakest link, if someone who hasn't seen it much and doesn't know much can't understand it, it isn't their fault, its the people who built the site's assuming everyone knows something.

When it comes to controlling the flow of human thought, we set the expectations. A poster has several resources to find this information. If he wants to know he can ask very quick or look it up in 15 seconds in the FAQ/post change thread or just google the term. If a person has no interest in learning about what his rank means then he or she doesn't have to.

function decision takes (person, rank, interest, laziness) returns (translation)
{
if (interest > laziness)
{translation = person.lookup(rank)}
else
{}
}

The amount of laziness varies from time to time but in general, it is rather low. Besides there is something to be said of the satisfaction of learning something yourself.

Also, seeing the English translation everytime would become rather mundane or even annoying. It takes fifteen seconds to look it up; you will spend hours if not days of your life looking at those words. Do you really want to see a redundant copy of them in a different lanugage every single time for multiple times on every page of every thread and profile?

The only way to determine if either of our opinions is more effective would be a pole because currently where only basing these thoughts of of our individual opinions, Unless you've contacted other people, which I doubt you have. You can make a pole if you like, I don't care enough to atm. Anyway, I'm over the topic, I just want those new ranks lol Either way I'll be happy ^_^
