The only ranks I see that could potentially have some issues are:
Ketuwong
Numeyu
'Eylan
Nawmtu
Karyu
Lekye'ung

So its really only 6 ranks. If someone wants to know what their rank means, they can look it up on a thread or the navi dictionary in a few seconds. If anything, it encourages people to learn Navi. Putting the English translations would take some of the "fun" out of the post ranks.

You also have to remember the horde of people who either have no interest in speaking Na'vi or don't have the time. Not everyone wants to run a definition search to understand what they "are" in a forum.

and making the assumption that the "majority" of posters know what something means is also a fault. Assumptions are almost always wrong, same with generalizations. If your building anything with a flow of people your going to want to focus on the weakest link, if someone who hasn't seen it much and doesn't know much can't understand it, it isn't their fault, its the people who built the site's assuming everyone knows something.

When it comes to controlling the flow of human thought, we set the expectations. A poster has several resources to find this information. If he wants to know he can ask very quick or look it up in 15 seconds in the FAQ/post change thread or just google the term. If a person has no interest in learning about what his rank means then he or she doesn't have to.

function decision takes (person, rank, interest, laziness) returns (translation)
{
if (interest > laziness)
{translation = person.lookup(rank)}
else
{}
}

The amount of laziness varies from time to time but in general, it is rather low. Besides there is something to be said of the satisfaction of learning something yourself.

Also, seeing the English translation everytime would become rather mundane or even annoying. It takes fifteen seconds to look it up; you will spend hours if not days of your life looking at those words. Do you really want to see a redundant copy of them in a different lanugage every single time for multiple times on every page of every thread and profile?

The only way to determine if either of our opinions is more effective would be a pole because currently where only basing these thoughts of of our individual opinions, Unless you've contacted other people, which I doubt you have. You can make a pole if you like, I don't care enough to atm. Anyway, I'm over the topic, I just want those new ranks lol Either way I'll be happy ^_^

Yes, act clueless. :P

Maybe not the best rank, I'll admit. But having an 'Eywa Makto', and then an 'Eywa', without them being affiliated with each other...

...well...

Awkward rank is awkward.

This IS an Avatar forum.

...just saying.

We already have ones like Taronyu which people who don't know much Na'vi might not know... if anything, it gets them to look it up, which is a good thing :)

I agree about having a translation next to it would spoil it a bit. If someone cares enough, then they'll take 20 seconds to look it up.

Woodsprite 10-30-2010 05:14 PM

Doesn't taronyu mean "warrior" or something?

"To become taronyu, hunter, you must choose your own ikran and he must choose you."

XD warrior is tsamsiyu.

Woodsprite 10-30-2010 05:59 PM

Oh yeah. Yeah...

Sometimes I get 'em confused. I remember certain lines; "warrior" just popped in my head. :P

Banefull 11-05-2010 01:52 AM

Upon some further searching I found more potential ranks:

Frrtu (guest, visitor)
Sngä’iyu (beginner)
Hapxìtu (member)
Tsulfä Si (master)
Keltsun (impossible)
Rey’eng (the Balance of Life)

"Sngä’iyu" could be inserted as a lower rank at 35 posts (or bump down seeker to 35 and put this at 50).
"Hapxìtu" could fill for the 200 post count slot I mentioned earlier.
"Karyu" could be bumped down to 1,250 and "Tsulfä Si" put in place at 1,500.
"Lekye'ung" could be moved up to 8,000 and "Keltsun" could be inserted at 6,500.
Some posters here have expressed disapproval with "Eywa" as a final post rank. "Rey’eng" could substitute at 25,000 or could simply be inserted at 15,000 as a rank of its own.
This would increase the total to 26 (or 27 if you could find a place for "Frrtu").

Some of these seem more suited than others. Any thoughts on what should be included?

Sign me up!

...lol I love saying that :P

Seriously though, do it up. This system looks great!

Banefull 11-06-2010 11:53 PM

Keltsun and Rey'eng seem like they should be switched but being so high, it doesn't really matter much to me.

/thumbs up

Looks good except for Tsulfä si--not sure if it's meant to be like that, but it basically mean the act of mastering. Tsulfä=mastery si=do/make.

Maybe Tsulfätu would work better? I'm no expert, but that should mean someone who does mastery, therefore a "master", which I think is what is being aimed for....

Just a suggestion.

Banefull 11-07-2010 12:25 AM

Quick look at learnnavi.org where I got these from:

tsulfä: [tsul."fæ] PF n. mastery
tsulfä si: [tsul."fæ si] PF vin. master
tsulfätu: [tsul."fæ.tu] PF n. master of an art, craft, or skill, expert

I'm not knowledge of Navi grammer so I don't know the exact nuances other than whats given here.

tsulfätu may be the correct term as it could mean expert/master also.

Yeah, I say use tsulfätu as I think we're trying to make it a title, not an action.

Putting the -tu or -yu suffix on a word makes it someone that does something (taronyu, tsamsiyu, numeyu etc).

Txum_kali'weya 11-07-2010 10:36 PM

cut out "insane" and I'm in.
It doesn't quite fit with the rest of the high ranking posts.

Seems like "One of the People" would be "Na'viyä Hapxì" (Part of the People), unless it'd be better suited to "One of the People" since we all know that saying better.

Aaron 02-07-2011 05:53 AM

My rank just changed to "Sngä’iyu" and I had to look it up to find out what it meant. I guess "Beginner" is appropriate! (Especially as my knowledge of the Na'vi language goes!!)

Some of those ranks are hilarious, BTW!! :D I hope I'm still hanging out here when somebody achieves the rank of "Neytiri Makto." :D

As for the proposed (but not adopted) rank of "Eywa": That should be an honorary title bestowed on all involved with keeping this place up and running. Somebody then needs to write a vBulletin plug-in that allows people of this rank to sick virtual banshees and thanators on trolls.

EDIT: Actually, I guess "Eywa" was on the final list, no?

Sacred Tsahaylu 02-07-2011 07:19 AM

We can sick ikrans and thanators on trolls. Why do you think this place is so troll free? :)

Woodsprite 02-07-2011 08:13 AM

It's troll-free because no one knows as much about it as other, more public avatar forums with thousands of members.

Just tryin' to keep it real. :P

Sacred Tsahaylu 02-07-2011 05:01 PM

Woodsprite, we deal with trolls so fast you don't usually see them.
There's one -->
Oh, you missed it

Aaron 02-07-2011 05:25 PM

Well, the "big bang" of Avatar is a ways behind us now, and most trolls had short half-lives. Most of what's left around anymore is fairly dependable ordinary matter. :)

X.,.Pandora.,.X 02-07-2011 10:09 PM

hmmmm, if someone gets 10k posts, we should be able to change our name (I would donate and all but my parents wont let me)

Eltu 02-07-2011 10:13 PM

I don't want to grant any special benefits based on post count - that would just be unfair since post count says nothing about dedication. ;)

But there's gotta be some kind of benefits for donating, so... it'll stay the way it is for now ;)

X.,.Pandora.,.X 02-07-2011 10:15 PM

haha alright, your just mad because I'm catching you :xD: hahaha :P

Eltu 02-07-2011 10:16 PM

You know I can change my post count to whatever I want if I'd like to, right? ;)

X.,.Pandora.,.X 02-07-2011 10:19 PM

O.O

X.,.Pandora.,.X 02-08-2011 01:36 AM

I do post, a lot, everyday.

Woodsprite 02-08-2011 02:43 AM

I just changed my post count.
