Live crab vending machine

Stuck between placing this in the Technology or Environmentalism threads.

0:29 is where it begins.

Technically speaking it isn't too bad, crab and lobster are boiled alive for cooking but there's something about this that just distorts and perverts nature. I mean, live crab in a tiny box, no food, no water, just waiting to be put out of their misery.

I completely respect the fishing and eating of crab, but, I don't know, this just doesn't seem right at all. This is not how nature intended to provide humans with food.

What do you guys think?

LOVEavatar 10-27-2010 10:40 PM

I have no idea what any of them said, but I damn hope they consider getting that machine removed and then release the crabs! (if they even survive :() This is just wrong and cruel! Japan really does have something special with their fishing methods... whales for example

Fkeu'itan 10-27-2010 10:49 PM

I really want to see one, so that I can smash it open and have all the crabs run loose.

This really is just disgusting.

Raiden 10-27-2010 10:52 PM

Ugh......

This is cruel.

At least give them some water.

If something were to happen to that machine and all the crabs died, not only would it be a huge waste but that mall is gonna smell pretty damn bad for some time.

I can't wait to see what happens when PETA gets word of this...........

And the Canadians/Norwegians have their baby-penguin slaughter :'(

No-one's doing anything about that!

Tsyal Makto 10-27-2010 11:46 PM

Seen this a while ago, but I agree, this is pretty sick. I mean really, live crab, in a vending machine. Has the world gone mad? :( I have no problem with eating crab (one of my favorite foods, actually), but I would never in a million years think selling them in vending machines would be an acceptable idea.

Though, honestly, is it any surprise these are from Japan? They don't exactly have the cleanest animal rights record out there.

Dreaming Of Pandora 10-27-2010 11:53 PM

Actually its a Japanese reporter reporting of China's introduction of these monstrosities. But yeah, neither country has jumped on the animal protection bandwagon, to say the least.

Unknown 10-27-2010 11:56 PM

That's just horrible! And when the crabs are dropped like that..... *shudder* So cruel. :(

Human No More 10-28-2010 12:26 AM

I have no problem with eating animals that lived a normal, happy life (I oppose factory farmed meat/eggs too), but that is wrong :(

zongtseng 10-28-2010 12:47 AM

This is the kind of thing that really makes me feel helpless as an animal advocate sometimes. So much wrong out there, and almost no one seems to care, or even see the problem.

Empty Glass 10-28-2010 01:30 AM

It's like something out of a dystopian film. Lives for sale, arranged in neat, streamlined order, all assigned with their own number, disposed of mechanically with the greatest of ease. I don't think I could ever buy a crab from such a machine.

Dolphin slaughter!? NOOOOOOOOO!

Pa'li Makto 10-28-2010 02:35 AM

This is really wrong..it suggests that all living creatures are disposable. I mean you can have fresh food, but isn't having an alive and kicking crab a little too fresh?
I'm sure I saw sauce bottles at the bottom of the vending machine too.
I think one of the reasons why not many people in china/japan would worry about this is because crabs aren't one of the cuddliest animals around..However, I don't see animal rights organisations like PETA defending animals like roaches either..

Hunter of the Glade 10-28-2010 02:36 AM

Kinda left speechless at that video :S
Very sad

Isard 10-28-2010 03:06 AM

It's Japan.

Woodsprite 10-28-2010 05:52 AM

Geez people, they're just crabs. It isn't that sad. No one gives a crap about what the Japanese do to them when they aren't in vending machines, but when they are, it's suddenly a crime. :hmm:

ISV Venture Star 10-28-2010 06:11 AM

I had some pet freshwater crabs once.

Isard 10-28-2010 06:17 AM

They've got to be treated/chilled down somehow. Otherwise they wouldn't survive.

Sight Unseen 10-29-2010 12:08 AM

Mmmm... crab.

Still this is kinda cruel, they should at least keep them in a tank or something. :(

I second that motion whoever said smash the vending machine. :war:

tm20 10-29-2010 12:20 AM

Pa'li Makto 10-29-2010 12:56 AM

omg sarcasim >_< (btw im asian, half chinese and half japanese. probably the 2 most hated asian races on earth. bring them together and create a child.... thats me, an abomination that should never have existed O_o)

Woodsprite 10-29-2010 01:08 AM

YOU'RE ASIAN?!?! :shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:

Hunter of the Glade 10-29-2010 01:18 AM

/lol

Banefull 10-29-2010 01:21 AM

It isn't that shocking (to me at least). I've seen live crabs at stores. They just sit in a bucket all day. A vending machine isn't that much different.

That being said, its still kinda wierd....

and @ asian comments, I am part Chinese. Not by much (less than 10%), since one of my Grandfathers was both Chinese and Portugese.

Lol, why is it so surprising? :P

Woodsprite 10-29-2010 01:40 AM

It's just so strange to me. It's like finding out someone here was black. I'M NOT trying to be racist or anything-- please know that. It's just that everyone I know here is predominantly "white man" or "white woman" from either Europe or America... and maybe sometimes Chile. :P

I think Sovereign's the only other person I know here who's asian.

Tsyal Makto 10-29-2010 01:46 AM

Who cares if we're white, or black, or brown, or yellow, or red? We're all the same color inside...blue. :P

That isn't the point.....

They aren't being kept in a fishtank or sump with plenty of water, they're shoved into a box so tight that they cannot move, and they aren't given any water to help keep them moist (from the looks of it).

It's about respecting the fact that it's a living thing, and that they should be treated as such until you are ready to kill them.

All living things deserve our respect, whether they're crabs, dandelions, or zebras.

Isard 10-29-2010 06:27 AM

I don't see how they're surviving. There has to be something we don't know about this.

I second this: no creature is superior or inferior to others, despite what we believe about intelligence or size being a measure of the worthiness of animals.

...No. I'd say humans are superior to crabs.
