UK people: don't read Brooker's column in the Guardian today
 

I love almost all of what he writes, but he's decided to go off a lazy, crowdpleasing rant about how much he hates "humourless jungle smurfs and their poxy tree" :hmm: :(

Why do I let this stuff get me down...

Not much chance of that, the Grauniad is a worthless rag at the best of times :P

The truth is, Avatar challenges people, it inspires them, it shows them not to accept how things are but see how they could be. Of course that's going to offend some people, but popularity shows what they may try to deny and ultimately they're the ones left looking stupid while everyone gets not only a great film, but a real, amazing message :)

Isn't it typical that many journalists/critics write about what they don't understand and feed it to people who have little understanding of the topic themselves...and they believe all of it. :facepalm:

I agree with you HNM, I think Avatar has a really powerful message that is meant to enlighten us all and empower us to take action in our own way. It's just a shame that there are some people who just think Avatar is about blue "smurf"-like people and 3D technology. >.<

One of the things I was dreading on Halloween was hearing someone shout 'smurf' at me. I'm pleased to say it didn't happen a single time, so far as I know. I only heard 'Avatar!' and 'Jake Sully!'

Nah seriously, a lot of folks actually seem to be ok with Avatar. I've met a lot of people that didn't learn to 'see' but they still thought it was a cool film. The fact that it's the most successful film of all time must say something. People who write these kind of articles are often shallow and blind so try not to let it get you too worked up. :)

I try to avoid the popular = good argument whenever possible, and defend the film on its own merits. One of these days I will get around to writing a big detailed diatribe against all the received opinions and lazy jeering this great film attracts.

Non of The Guardian's movie critics particularly liked Avatar, but that says more about The Guardian's pool of critics than the movie itself.

83 percent of critics liked it, so hey, who cares what a bloke from the Guardian thinks.

Hell, maybe we're all 'stupid' for taking Avatar to heart. But hell, with all the things it could lead to, all the lives that will be really lived, i'd say it's a wonderful kind of stupid.

I feel exactly the same way.

Here is what you do. Acquire smurf stuffed animals, hundreds of them. Then begin subtly watching this guy. Get a good idea of his routine over the week, then you begin leaving the smurfs around for him to find, on his doorstep, his desk if you can, at a restaurant. You might have a little note card with a friendly message from said smurf.
