Weaver reveals that Cameron first drew Neytiri when he was 14!

Sigourney Weaver - Weaver: 'Cameron's Drive Comes From His Mum' - Contactmusic News

Quote:

And Weaver reveals the blue alien princess Neytiri in Cameron's Avatar was inspired by a picture he drew as a gift for his mum - when he was just 14.

She explains, "He's told me that he first drew Neytiri when he was 14. He drew this picture of a blue princess for his mother as a gift. There's something about her that has inspired Jim."
So this 'first' drawing (below) wasn't the first!

It mentions a drawing he made when he was in his 20s, not one he made when he was a teenager (I may be wrong, correct me if I am).

Hmm, 14. So that would have been 1968, the year 2001 came out and humans first orbited the moon.

Hmm... I'll have to check on that :P brb...

Edit: "Sometime in the late 1970s in Orange County, California, James Cameron painted a picture of a tall, slender blue girl standing on a field of magenta grass." Guess you're accusations were correct ISV ;)

1968 was also the peak of the Vietnam war.

Hmm.

Indeed! :D

Well, I'd heard Avatar was inspired by dreams before, but this is new :)

Well yes, partially :P JC has mentioned multiple times in interviews that his inspiration to create Avatar came from a bunch of visually inspiring dreams through his years as a Sci-Fi fan :)

Vauktu 11-28-2010 02:31 PM

I knew that was his first drawing of Neytiri, but I had no idea he drew it when he was only 14. Pretty cool. :)

ISV Venture Star 11-28-2010 02:48 PM

No, that's not the first drawing, just the earliest one he's shown. I wonder if we'll ever get to see the first one.

I heard that as well... so cool and like said before in my "Avatar Testimony" as I call it I had dreams similar to me living with... a tribe I guess you can call them on another planet, although my dreams had no other humans anywhere, it was just me, and this tribe, for miles around. I met a girl from their alien tribe and we fell in love. Call me a liar but its the honest truth. Obviously not like Avatar, but in the same sense. Years ago I just wanted to get away from this earth, start over on a new world with a new life with a new community (still do I guess you can say) but back then I was alone in those thoughts so I kept to myself. wow kind of off topic sorry :P

But thats so cool I remember seeing that picture in the Art of Avatar book by the sketches of the Na'vi in their developing stage. Super cool, I'm sure she has that picture (if she still has it) framed up on a wall. I wonder how a mother of James Cameron must feel about James and his accomplishments. So proud I bet

Helicoradian 11-29-2010 10:25 AM

Honestly, James Cameron doesn't look to be the artist type at the surface. But it amazes me when you see a drawing/sketch done by him.

I would like to see the first drawing of Neytiri though :)

Neytiri. 12-06-2010 10:14 PM

That's a ridiculously good drawing for a 14 year old! I love how beautiful she was even as a rough drawing <3
