Life in Outer Space

The first member of the animal kingdom that can survive unprotected in outer space has been discovered:

- Tardigrades: The World's Toughest Critters

In September 2008 a box of water bears was launched into orbit 270 km above the Earth. They were passengers aboard the Russian Satellite FOTON-M3 on a mission named TARDIS (Tardigrades In Space).... Many were found to have survived the trip intact.

Wasn't this known already?

No one has ever shot them into outer-space before.

Lol, Tardigrades. That name always gets me.

Of course they survived.

Tardigrades, or water bears, as they are often called, can almost completely dehydrate themselves, shrivel up into a wrinkled sack, and come back to life instantly with a drop of water.

They are a common resident of temporary ponds, or vernal pools, where they form the food supply for the larvae of many species of insects.

But I guess that link just made this redundant, huh? :<

They're already known to survive the worst earthly conditions one could imagine, no surprise that they survive in space, too. :) Nature's own little tanks.

Extra point of win for the mission name. :P
