Recommended fanfics

This thread is for some fanfics other than the ones here which are recommended. Please give suggestions, along with a description of the fanfic :)

Tsahaylu, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net - Jake and Neytiri making tsaheylu for the first time, a beautiful story...

Raptor 12-29-2010 02:14 AM

I generally prefer one-shots that don't add too much details to the world of Avatar. Most, but not all, of the longer ones tend to get convoluted and go out of hand very quickly.

Hunting, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net - Beautiful little moment between Jake and Neytiri. One shot

On Your Own Two Feet, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net - Jake reveals something of human life to Neytiri. One shot.

Another Thing to Thank For, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net - A short post-movie one-shot. Jake and Neytiri are sharing a moment together, when Neytiri confesses some unsettling facts to Jake concerning their first encounter.

From one of our very own forum members.

This fanfic paints an outstanding love relationship between Jake and Neytiri; deeper than what the film itself presents.

I remember reading this a few weeks after I first saw Avatar in April this year...PAD was strong, and this fanfic just added to the emotional experience.

This is one of the best I've ever read.
The last couple chapters will make you cry/melt.

I wish this person would keep writing...she is outstanding at what she does.

That is a good one. A few of the ones in my favorites.

I've lost interst in fan-fics a long time ago but before then, It was this one that was outstanding. Dispite some now realized plot holes, It's the least far fetched fan-fic closest to Pandora.

Okay, I'll recommend my own :) All can be found on Fan Fiction.net

"Aftermath" This is a series of four stories. The first shows how the humans at Hell's Gate are convinced to actually leave Pandora after the battle is lost. (It was written long before the CE was released, so it assumes that the avatars did not seize control of the base). The second is set back on Earth and shows how the RDA reacts to the disaster. The third is set twenty years later and is about the Sky People trying to reestablish relations with the Na'vi. The fourth... well, read it and see :) Aftermath Chapter 1, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net

"Face of the Enemy" This deals with two young warriors, one human, one Na'vi who are thrown together during the Battle of Pandora. It is not exactly part of the "Aftermath" series, but could fit into it.
Face of the Enemy Chapter 1, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net

"The Option" This is set right after the humans evacuate. Parker Selfridge isn't quite ready to give up yet and one of his subordinates gets into quite a fix down on Pandora. Definitely part of the "Aftermath" series.

The Option, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net

"The Legacy" Part of the "Aftermath Series". Set after the humans come back to Pandora and one of the scientists makes an amazing discovery...

The Legacy Chapter 1, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net

"Justice" What if Miles Quaritch survived the battle?

Justice, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net

"Unconquerable Spirits" What if Eywa had not intervened in the Battle of Pandora?

highly recommended as the best pieces within the parameters of fanfiction.net.

there is one here that is slightly better these, though...

Scott, this thread is for fics that AREN'T already posted in this forum; no fair reccing your own. :-p

Anyway... I find that the vast majority of fanfiction (even the ones recommended in this thread) aren't up to the standards I look for, which I'll admit are pretty high (i.e. is this writing on par with stuff you’d see in published novels). However, you do find the occasional gem that is very well-written, and I encourage even people who "don't read fanfiction" to give us writers a chance, look around, and see what you find.

Here are some excellent pieces not found in this forum, from one of my favorite Avatar writers:

The Killer in Me, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net
a study of Parker Selfridge, post-movie.
This is an excellent character study of Parker Selfridge post-movie - his personal aftermath, how he responds to the events of the movie, what happens to him, etc. I find it to be completely plausible and true to canon. I highly recommend it, even if you hate Selfridge with a burning passion - actually, especially if you hate Selfridge with a burning passion.

With You Now, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net
The aftermath of a war is not the easiest time to start a relationship; this ties in to 'Without Seeing.' Jake/Neytiri
This is one of my favorite Jake/Neytiri pieces. It’s sweet and romantic, but it also explores some of the difficulties and pain that they’re working through, without being overly dramatic about it. There’s something very mature and nuanced about the way it’s written.

Without Seeing, an Avatar fanfic - FanFiction.Net
Jake's thoughts on fate, faith, and Tom, post-movie. Jake/Neytiri
Pretty much what it says on the tin. This one is written in Jake’s voice, first person; the author does a very good job writing from his point of view.

Any of the Avatar fanfics by Xenobia on ff.net

Raiden 01-08-2011 08:05 AM

I propose that this thread be stickified.

And "The Enemy of My Enemy" on FF.net is good; it's the sequel to Endeavors of Art, but I will say that portions of it are a bit conflict-heavy.

And certain much-loved-non-OC main character dies.

*ahem*

Human No More 01-09-2011 04:06 PM

I really didn't want depressing ones here, but I guess that if people want to... :(
Well, that's one I know to avoid now.

Ashen Key 01-10-2011 08:52 AM

Echoing Sothis' recs, they are just amazing. And hmm. Scott's post makes me wonder, would it be worth starting a thread where we can link all of our stuff in one post? I know I miss things due to them being posted a while ago, and sometimes it's nice to point to our fics and go 'look at what I did :D?'

Just an idea!

For my part, I am reccing Brave New Day:
A year after the events of the movie, the first ISV arrives at Pandora. Jake Sully and the remaining humans would just as soon send them away, but nothing goes according to plan, and soon Kyle Fischer's life will be changed forever because of it.

This fic? Is just AMAZINGLY good. Still in progress, but it's really, really well written, with really interesting OCs, and so it's been making me flail and squeak (and go 'AUGH' at one bit, but in a good way. Oh, NORM) and race to find out what happens next. Just, really, really, REALLY good. Once I'm done, I'm going to have to go back to the start to reread it, as I'm sure I've missed stuff in my race to find out what happens next.

Second rec is Alive Day
Several months before he is scheduled to travel to Pandora, Tom Sully manages to get time off from training to spend an evening with his brother. For Tom, the outing proves to be a learning experience.

An 'alive day' is a day that some former soldiers celebrate, as the day they got their injuries that could have - should have - killed them. And the fic is really, really well-done, too.

I don't see any problem with making a thread to index all your stories.

It actually isn't terribly depressing, because the writer did a great job of not dwelling on the loss of that character.

However, I will say that it was unecessary, and it turned an already conflict-heavy fanfic into one with too much conflict. I can count four or five instances where there were negative character interactions that made me feel somewhat sad.

A couple of them were really good, but the rest really weren't needed, and it felt *almost* like he was trying to troll the fanbase at one point.

Ashen Key 01-11-2011 11:58 PM

Aaaand just found another rec this morning! And I spent the whole morning reading, and OH MY it's brilliant.

The Spiral of Lives : AU, as if there was no Avatar Program and Jake got paralyzed on Pandora. It has Neytiri, Grace and Trudy as other main characters - just as main as Jake - and is completely fabulous and awesome, and a wonderful look at 'what if things were different' while still retaining the essence of canon.
