Thread of Underappreciated Videogames
This thread is the opposite of the disappointing videogames thread I made a while back.
We always hear about a select few games in the market these days but what about the rest? Post any relatively obscure videogames that just blow you away. To start off, I think Arma II deserves a mention. COD and battlefield do not even come close in terms of realism. The maps are so large that they literally take you six hours to run across, it has a fully funcitoning scenario editor, and AI battles can include around 1500 units. Not to mention that its easy to mod. |
Definitely Amnesia. Scary ass game XD but so frikin' good.
Oh and Folklore. One of my favorite games. |

R-Type. Hardest horizontal shmup ever. The first three and Leo are the best of the series.
When I figure out how, I want to upload my playthroughs of those games onto youtube. I've gotten some pretty good ones down, but I haven't beaten any of the games without dying. Thats bat**** insane in terms of difficulty. |
This game was very popular when it came out, but ever since Bullfrog Productions went out of business, it lied in a grave... until I dug it till recently!
Lets hear him out.. For it's release in 1999, this is the best intro video of it's time. A taste of a bit of action, keepa'r The guy who made this game actually was a founder of Lionhead Studios, the people who've created Fable and Black and White, which is another one!! Two words: Very Beautiful. I played this game for a long, long time with my high school buddy. We both had god mod on! HAHAHAHA |
I love a LOT of games generally regarded as bad... here are some of them:
http://www.deafgamers.com/06screensh...nlordspic4.jpg Dungeon Lords This fantasy RPG was released in a very unfinished state (in version 1.0 you couldn't even play through the game - the final parts weren't made yet) - and even after 5 patches it remains quite buggy. But despite this, and a whole lot of other issues, it's an awesome game. Why? Its atmosphere, both regarding the game world, and the gameplay. Almost nothing is revealed to you at first, and this in a good sense - you really get the feeling of exploring an unknown world. And all enemies you meet has such a great amount of personality, making them really fun to face. It's simply unique - and if you can look past its bugs and unfinished state, an awesome game awaits. http://img.gamespot.com/gamespot/ima..._screen002.jpg TimeShift Criticised for being unimaginative and bland in its diversity. However, I think it's great FPS action at its best. For the uninitiated, in this game you can slow, stop and reverse time while fighting, which really makes the battles a great deal of fun. Sure, the rest of the gameplay is nothing we haven't seen before, but it's still fun to play - which makes it an awesome game in my book. http://www.gamershell.com/static/scr...60409_full.jpg Heroes of Might and Magic IV Generally regarded as the worst game in the series - I completely disagree. In fact, I'd say it's the best game in the series. It's so much more complex than any other HoMM games, there's so much more to do, everything's much more variated. The new hero system is awesome, the new content is awesome... the only thing I don't like is the cities, I think they are much more well-made in the third game. Everything else though, I find insanely fun and top-notch. |

This game isn't one of the best games made, in fact it's "above average" but I can't stop playing it. The fact that I am on Pandora and the environment is stunning keeps me coming back for more. I've beaten it 7 times already and still working on another run. There's always new stuff being found every time I play through it. Heck I just discovered the "cat ears" plant. The nigh time on Pandora is simply amazing. I am still waiting till I get my 3D tv in the near future because this game was made to be played in 3D. It has the option of 2D and a variety of 3D modes. I tried playing it "cross eyed" and it actually works but strains my eyes lol. |
New game that I just recently discovered on Steam. Idk why but I just love this game so much xD
The sense of humor in the game is wonderful as well :) |

Mount and Blade Warband is an absolutely brilliant game. It has one of the best systems for hand to hand combat leading to some very exciting multiplayer fights like the video below.
Epic calvary charge incoming: |
Well, I don't wanna go through the hassle of uploading another pick, ;) , but I think Magna Carta 2 deserves to be on this list.

Half a year later...
I'd like to add Timeshift to the list. What looks like to be a simple first person shooter, but, with a major twist to it... Timeshift ability! Now, it might not sound like much, but believe me, this is one of the most creative and unique fps's I've played. Not only does the timeshift ability invite varied gameplay, but you can also choose to play the way you want! Did a patrol spot you? Are you low on ammo and health? No prob! reverse time, charge up, pause time, walk past them, continue with whatever! :D Compared to other fps's, this is a real challenge. Even on easy you can fck up if you fail to use the timeshifting in the right way. |
Um... look at my post earlier in the thread. ;)
Yes, Timeshift is awesome :D |
