Stop renewal of "Patriot Act" this week

Quote:

The PATRIOT Act is set to expire in just FOUR WEEKS, but Congress is trying to rush through a last minute extension!

Since it was passed almost a decade ago, some of the most noxious portions of the PATRIOT Act have burrowed their way deep into our legal system. A year ago, President Obama signed a bill extending three provisions of the original PATRIOT Act; last week Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Michigan) introduced legislation to extend them again.

Together, these provisions make a mockery of our civil liberties: They let government officials spy on whomever they want, for any reason, without ever letting them know or giving them a chance to challenge the order in court.

Enough is enough: Will you join us in demanding that Congress finally let these provisions expire? Just add your name at right, and we'll automatically send a message to your senator, representative, and President Obama:

TO MY ELECTED OFFICIALS: After nearly ten years, it's time to let the PATRIOT Act expire once and for all. I urge you to oppose its re-authorization.
Add your name at right and we'll deliver your message to Washington.

Here's a more detailed article from the CATO Institute that explains some of the problems with the PATRIOT Act provisions that are up for extension. And here's an overview by the ACLU.

UPDATE, February 7th: The House is trying to ram through a sneaky renewal of the PATRIOT Act this week! They're doing it without debate, and without including any meaningful reforms. Please sign the petition below, and use this page to call your lawmaker to urge him or her to vote no.

Signed.

*sigh* Why is Congress so eager to continue commander-in-chimp's eight year trashing of the Constitution?

Already signed :)

Patriot Act has been denied for now. It need a super majority (2/3) to pass and didn't get it. HOWEVER, the Republicans who control the House made plans to bring the measure back for a quick vote later this month under normal rules, requiring only a simple majority for passage.

Already signed when I got the email.

In a stunning move, the House of Representatives refused to extend the PATRIOT Act last week. The momentum is on our side, but the House and Senate are poised to vote on the PATRIOT Act again this week and we need to keep up the pressure
...
UPDATE, Feb 14th: The House just passed the PATRIOT Act extension, so the fight moves on to the Senate. There are several versions of the bill in play there, some of which do much more than others to respect Americans' civil liberties -- and there are signals that we have several strong allies in Senate, with Rand Paul (R-KY) announcing his opposition earlier today. Let's keep up the pressure!

On it :)

You are not serious, are you?

Just in case you are - the people who organized against Mubarak in Egypt, the people who wanted to kill Hitler, what is your label for them and what do you think the governments label for the same people is....

I just watched "ecowarriors", a documentray about eco activism. Mostly sitting on trees and chaining oneself to railways to prevent nuclear waste transport and logging and such. Activities like Greenpeace used to do them. Here in Germany, it is called activism, protest, non-violent resistance maybe, civil disobedience and maybe if something gets trashed it is property damage. In the US it is eco-terrorism, people get hold tight and teargas is dropped directly into the eyes, people get beat up and even die at the hand of private and governmental forces, people go to jail for 20+ years for damaging three cars.

Remember - it is not you yourself who decides who is a terrorist and who not and it is too late to wait until you are on the list before standing up against the injustice.

In my country, the nazis managed to create a government of participation in which each person did only what was regarded normal by the government. That was of course in their own best interest, because they did not wanted to be labelled as communists and shot or as un-german and put to Dachau.

There is no way we should let the government decide what is "normal" for us and try to meddle through...

Well I don't plan on living in the US for long anyways. But I see where your coming from
