Grace's tattoo
So, I have a bit of a project I'm working on right now, inspired by these two picspams on the costumes and possible character implications in the movie Inception. Basically, I'm looking to do something similar for Avatar (more on cataloguing and possible character-implications than details as to fashion). And part of the costume are tattoos, even if they are the actor's (they weren't covered up, so I figure they were left for a reason, and in any case, the CHARACTER now has them, too). I can see most of those who have them, but I've run into trouble with Grace's.
Grace has a tattoo on her right arm, which can be seen in the cafeteria scene when she's explaining Jake's adventures the day before. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...Avatar2952.jpg Trouble is, I'm finding impossible to get a good look at the design, and I have no idea what it could be. So, does anyone have a HD shot of it, and/or does anyone have any idea what the tattoo could be? |
i remember when i noticed it when watching it at the cinema it looked alot like this
http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images...png?1291694129 dude to her left also has one on his hand, it's a small love heart |

Oooooh, do you have any idea what it means? And yep, I knew the guy's heart - although not what it means, either, as it kinda looks like a crest of some kind. |
the logo is actually Tracy McGrady's logo for his Adidas shoes so it's definitely not what she has on her arm but it looks close, probably a cross of some sort since i read somewhere that Grace Augustine is a very catholic or christian name.
|
Well, it has implications, but isn't directly one itself, but I don't think that would be it anyway, it really doesn't fit with her character and it's too wide to be one - it looks kind of like a diamond shape. I had a quick look for a shot where I could see it properly, but couldn't find anything great.

i think it's an asian character
well, after minutes of using google translate and putting in numerous words which i thought were relevant to Grace's interest i finally put in "world" and one of the translations which came up was this: 宇 it's mandarin, i guessed that Grace cared about earth being a botanist so yeah, i entered it and that came up. it does look similar to what we see in the pics |
Good idea, but based on HNM's 3rd picture, that's not it. Maybe it's a different Mandarin character, but I can't really make it out clearly enough to tell (and my reading-vocabulary is not that great, anyway).

It looks to me (and my little sister, who was peering over my shoulder) more like a fan shape than a written character. Her first thought was a rising sun, but maybe a type of plant?
Hmm. When I get some time, I'll crop it and fiddle and tilt it around and see what it looks like from another angle. |
To me it looks like a palm tree....anyone else think that
or It could be a tribal symbol the Na'vi use.... |
Okay! Cropped one of the pics HNM put up (and thank you SO MUCH), and flipped it over, and then sharpened it. (the flat edge is the one closest to her hand)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...irrorsharp.png Had suggestions of a type of leaf, or the insignia of something. |
Oooh, nice work, Ash! Flipping it around and sharpening does help a lot.

Aaaaand we could have two possible answers, thanks to my RPG's chat. The first, both flip and serious, is a marijuana leaf: the second, more serious, is the Agni of Shiva. In more detail, images of Shiva dancing (the Nataraja), on its/His upper left hand, is Agni, the fire of creation/destruction. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...NatarajaHA.jpg (another way of imaging it can be found here) Looks the closest to me, anyway - and Hinduism IS where we get "avatar" from originally, not to mention the blue, and also Trudy's Samson is called Maya. To quote wikipedia just on Agni himself: Quote:

Looks like a leaf to me - nice work getting that detail from the screencap :)
|
Not that I've paid a lot of attention or anything, but is the tat Grace's, or does Sigourney have any ink?

I don't think she does, but it's hard to really find much information. Usually if an actor has a tattoo, it gets covered up with makeup for a character unless they can work it in somehow, but then again, characters rarely have them as part of their character unless it's a significant point due to the resulting amount of makeup needing to be done to create a fake one.

I know this is a major bump but I got a better screenshot of the tattoo just seconds before she gone to Eywa.

Makes decent sense for Grace to have a small tattoo of a plant :P
|
Oh! Never noticed...so cute  Definitely it makes sense for Grace to have this tattoo :)
|
I...I....this is why fandoms scare me.
Now then who wants to hear about how I extrapolated the meaning of some of the markings inside the TARDIS and how they prove that the Whoniverse takes place in the same setting as WH40K? |
...I don't think anyone extrapolated meanings from it, we're just wondering what it is of (and whether or not it's part of her character). ¬_¬

Its just who I am. Though I can see how my sarcasm gets missed. |
Sorry, that was my fail :P
I understand the tendency of fandom to run to great lengths to work out significance of tiny things - although I just want to know what her tattoo is of! :P What I think is really interesting is how the majority of characters main and random have some kind of tattoo from when their arms/neck are visible - a subtle yet realistic acknoeldgement that they are gradually getting more accepted as they become popular. |
I love that we are noticing the small things in the movie, whether they are deliberate or not. I really don't think JC would let something like an inappropriate tattoo slip through in one of his main characters; so it is not insignificant. I think it could be a moth. Have just checked out moth&myth and some beliefs start to sound pretty relevant. In Europe it is a symbol of death; in Jamaica it represents a "soul not at rest"; in Hinduism it is believed that a moth "dies a living death" when it falls into a flame. What think you?
