Earth Hour

Earth Hour - Home

Looks like a nice idea! I am participating! :D

iron_jones 03-15-2011 10:41 PM

I think everyone doing their best to lessen their enviromental footprint would be a lot more effective than a small portion of people turning off their lights for an hour.

Better than nothing though.

Thorinair 03-15-2011 10:51 PM

The message is what counts, it gives us something to think about.
Besides, if all goes well, we might be able to see the starry sky in cities! ^^

josie20 03-15-2011 11:40 PM

I unwittingly participated last year. Looks like I'll unwittingly participate again this year because I won't be home. Anyway, I keep everything off and unplugged when not in use, which is almost all of the time.

is so only by the fact that we are pointing out what Earth Hour truly
is about: it isn’t pro-earth, it is anti-man and anti-innovation.
Really? Really??

WTF is with this false dichotomy. Pro-Earth =/= anti-man. Why do the miniminds among us always seem to think that? Good god...

Fighter-of-Wars 03-16-2011 04:27 AM

Sounds like a cool idea, mark my calender.

I think they're pointing out that Earth hour isn't pro earth.

It's a symbolic event to bring about awareness of conservation (which, by the way seems pretty pro-environment to me), they make it look as if it's some sort of glorification of luddism.

Rejecting technology as a symbolic event?

How about doing something less symbolic and more, effective?

Like devoting a week to take extra effort to recycle? That's both pro environment, and efficient. And actually does something.

Tsawke`Iheyu 03-16-2011 07:19 AM

I participated last year. I will do the same on 26th. :)

iron_jones 03-16-2011 07:51 AM

Symbolic events rarely change anything. I doubt this event has helped anyone see the light and had them change their ways. Everyone knows they should conserve energy. Very few do conserve energy.

Why not both?

Hey, you gotta raise awareness somehow, and little things like this do help.

And how is it rejecting technology? It's just turning the lights off for an hour? You're making it into something it's not.

A group around here is having a sleep-out for homelessness. Would you consider that a worthless effort, as well?

Ooooh! I would!!!

SirHaxalot 03-16-2011 07:10 PM

Well.. At least it is better than the power company that is telling people to turn off their TV etc. on the front instead of having them on standby, because that saves a lot of energy! I'm pretty sure that they are fully aware of that it wont affect power usage at all (well, close to nothing), but it does give the appearance that they care about the environment more than earning money...

Well c'mon, how is sleeping outside (or whatever they're doing) beneficial to the homeless community? It's not that we're not aware of the homeless before.

Yeah. I would consider it absolutely worthless. I suppose it makes them "feel better", but the homeless would probably prefer something that actually helps? Build a shelter? Volunteer at a food pantry?

If you want to make yourself feel better, fine, but don't get huffy when everybody else laughs at you.

Tsyal Makto 03-16-2011 10:05 PM

Again, why not both? An event like that to raise awareness, and then a program to build shelters/solve environmental problems?

Isard 03-16-2011 11:02 PM

The term "raise awareness" is synonymous with "sooth our conscience". It serves no purpose but to make people feel better about themselves, by shunning privileges they've earned.

I agree. Lighting is an extremely small part of load, and events like this will convince people 'there, I've done something, now I don't need to do anything else'.
That said, I will be doing this even if just to see what effect it has on the night sky around here.

Now that, is a valid, and welcome reason to partake.

But I get a decent view with our local light pollution anyway. Enjoy it.

That's true. Isn't it amazing how complacent our culture is?

I'm not too cool to do it, I just refuse to participate in a worthless endeavor.
