Avatar - a film that was written off
|
Little did they know... :)
|
Hahaha, if they only knew! I really really wonder what Avatar would look like if it got made in 1999! :)

Lots of crappy prosthetics and body paint, if that gives you any idea of how awful that would have been compared to what we got. |
It probably would have looked very similar to Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
|
Good things come to those who wait, in this case. :)
|
Definitely, there's a reason JC only wanted it done when it could actually be done properly :)
|
Interesting. Not the least that he had apparently planned for the Na'vi to be purple. :P (Like a species in my world-building... it seems every idea I get, Cameron has already made use of, or is going to make use of.)

Anybody ever play crysis? That's about what it would've looked like if it were made then. This is 1999, your smartphone is the equivalent of about 4 Pentium II boxen. :D
Can't believe they wrote it off, glad they did though. Could you imagine anyone other than Saldana as Neytiri? |
Definitely not
Yeah, the smartphone as P2 boxen sounds about right, but back then, large clusters were much rarer as well, since that was before the entire concept of blade servers among other important concepts (such as GPU processing), and had much higher power, cost and cooling requirements per clock cycle (and less performance per clock), and the price and general deployment levels mean that a far higher percentage of large installations were government-run (and for calculations and simulations, not rendering). |
Interesting how JC wanted to see the film done when he was 14. Who would have thought that the film would have blown the box office away ten years after it was written off?
I have to admit that when I first heard of Avatar, I didn't want to see it. I had been hearing so much about it and thought I'd see it eventually, but not on lpenig weekend. Turns out that I didn't see it until late 2010. Now, I feel like kicking myself for not seeing it in the cinema. :( |
I wish I had seen it on opening weekend too... I just don't go to the cinema that much, so it didn't occur to me to, and I saw it a couple of days into 2010 :(
|
I saw it at the opening weekend! Pretty much fell in love with it after seeing the first trailer. The character design on the Na'Vis looked awesome, and it seemed like a great movie, so i gave it a try!
Im glad i did! ^^ |
