Jake 3D WIP

Hey all,

My Neytiri 3D model is more or less done, still doing some experimenting and animation.
Pretty tough and slow going atm so i could use something fun next to that to stay motivated.
Time to use what i learned from that project (before i forget it, been a while) and start on Jake and try some new things aswell.

Just started this evening so i dont have much to show for but i cant start this and not show anything so below some early screenshots :)

Still roughly modeling his head and its far from done.
As you can see I only made one half of the face and mirrored that so the middle isnt quite right.
Hopefully i can make him look more like the "real" Jake soon its all still pretty far off.
If you have tips/suggestions or good reference pics and have the time be sure to post them :P

@Tm20, yeah although its all far away still thats the idea :)

Well it goes fast at first but getting the details right takes alot more time.
NP tho, this is the fun part :P
Below a little update from a few sides with the wireframe showing aswell.

Looks like a good start, this is going to great too if your Neytiri one is anything to go by :)

amazing...how do you do this? i have very very very little expirience with 3D modeling. the program i tried to use was zMap (failed -__- too difficult to use) and i tried creating a car. it had the top, side and front views and i got as far as drawing each view but I assume this somehow creates the overall 3D model. is this how you did Neytiri and this?

prowler 06-18-2011 08:41 AM

Looks better and better :awesome:

ShellyFayexo 06-18-2011 11:17 AM

That is AWSOME!

fierox 06-19-2011 01:26 AM

thx all,
@Tm20, i dont think i know Zmap but yeah its still very much like that. Most 3D packages work that way.
You can customise it, i work in 3D view the most but now and then front and side views really help.
So you have multiple views you can use but you work on one object.
3D progs have come a long way already in becoming more user friendly but its still frustrating now and then :P
But its only getting more fun, faster pc's, 3d printers and im pretty sure with kinect'ish and 3d devices soon enough you'll be able to just sculp with your hands and fingers and just tilt your head or rotate the model with your fingers. Now how awesome that would be :D

but how did you get everything so perfect (too perfect) -___- it's like you just drew it with no blueprints. the way i did my car was i imported top, front and side views into the program and traced over the blueprints and that's the beginning. if its only 1 object then i dont know how you can do it D: way too hard for me to do, i'll just stick to drawing on paper :P

anyway looks great so far :)

fierox 06-19-2011 03:53 AM

Haha its far from perfect still but thx :shy:

No i dont use blueprints i gather reference pictures, and use those by opening them on a second screen or in Maya and just keep looking and switching between them. Not always a good way of working but oh well..
Another secret i use is a little mirror i to fill the gaps sort off. Theres a little bit of me in all my drawings :D
Digital or pencil drawings i really can recommend having a little mirror around!

Well did some more tweaking on the face this evening, think im getting closer. He looks a little grumpy in it but emotes and expressions will be added later. I actually want his face to be sort of a base pose right now thats right in the middle of all that might be added later.

Below a screenshot with both Ney and Jake's face for fun :)
