gigantomaniac mine planned for arctic Canada

Britain's richest man to build giant Arctic iron ore mine - News - The Ecologist

Quote:

Mittal has already outlined an ambitious plan to use more than 2,000 workers to build 24 bridges, stretches of road, warehouses, fuel depots, landfills and an airstrip as well as the docks at Milne Inlet and Steensby.

The railway alone will take four years to construct and will need its own roads and quarries for iron ore, which the company says is "an essential commodity for ongoing growth and development of our society" particularly the developing economies of China and India.
[...]
the wildlife group WWF, describes the planned mine as a "game changer" and a test case that could affect all future industrialisation of the far north.
[...]
The statement outlines how marine mammals are also found in abundance in the region including polar bears, narwhals, beluga whales and blowhead whales while migratory birds include snow geese, rough-legged hawks and gyro-falcons.

The operators say they will work hard to prevent contamination from sewage, wastewater and explosive equipment-washing but they admit: 'building sections of the railway into the edge of several lakes will be unavoidable … some fish habitat will be lost.'

It also says 'accidental kills of caribou could occur as a result of project activity' and that 'small numbers of ringed seal mortalities could occur as a result of icebreaking activity.'

The company admits any large diesel spill 'would have significant environmental effects'
They just cannot leave the last remaining wild place alone. They just can't.
And global warming allows them to do so... :'(

Another day, another threat to Earth :( This is going to keep happening until there is no where left to build. The loss of even more habitat and the deaths of more beasts just so humans can have more money. Something has to happen, gah I wish I were an Inuit, I'd take my rifle and deal these scum a blow no amount of money could save them from.

Ah, terrorism. Quite useful at times.

Marvellous Chester 07-08-2011 04:20 PM

I'm not sure it counts as terrorism if you're defending your homeland ;)

As unfortunate as it is, the fact is that balance is impossible in a system that relies on constant consumption.

It's a noble task to spread awareness, but I'm afraid that it will change little.

Yeah, that was the point of "if I was an Inuit" 'cause that kind of makes it a defensive action. But then, I guess officially the land is owned no longer by the indigenous people there anyways. And if so, no one cares anyways, as you all know "if you sit on sh1t they want, you have to go" (or something like that). Same same always - no matter if it it the Amazon, Chile, Bolivia, Canada or Australia. As long as this culture has not eaten all the native cultures and consumed all the land they once were part of, it will not stopped - unless it is stopped first....

I'd like to toss him into a pack of komodo dragons.

"Where's your money now, ****er?!"

Empty Glass 07-08-2011 06:19 PM

Well, at least they're honest about the environmental effects... :\

Pig bastard. Wonder how he would feel if he were a native to the regions he pillages, and it were his ass on the line from this project? But I guess it's so easy to pillage the world from high on a little ivory tower in Britain.

Scum like this has lost the right to be called human, to me.

All that for some stupid iron we can find in pleanty of other places?
If the mining process was done so that after they mined everything and left there would be no trace then it wouldn't be so bad but I've never heard of a mine like that

Moco Loco 07-12-2011 05:38 AM

Strip mining is the closest, to my knowledge.

Actually, strip mining can be one of the worst.

iron_jones 07-12-2011 08:11 AM

But how oh how will we get our iron!?

auroraglacialis 07-12-2011 04:09 PM

Hmm - there are some hundreds of millions chunks of it driving around every day. Once oil runs out, they can be put to a better use :P

Hmm - interesting. I dreamt about sabotaging a stripmine project tonight. Got is all flooded with water once their pumps stopped working :P ;)
