In deed the twsin on a Avatar starts low down on the back of the head.
Obviously there's no equivalent image for a Na'vi.

I would think the actual nerves would start lower down on the Na'vi as well since the queue can be seen behind the sheet of her upbraided hair during the Tree of Voices scene, it's just the hair for the braid, starts higher up most of the time, a cultural difference instead of an anatomical one. Just speculation. I can't find a good picture right now, and my DVD screenshots keep coming out all blurry, I need to get the Blu ray.

mikkowilson 07-26-2011 11:02 PM

Post a DVD one of the frame you are referring to and I can post a HD one of the same shot.

She's given me some very useful hand-written notes.

I didn't find the cured alginate to be too difficult to remove, it just gradually eased away. Applying it on the other hand was very tricky. It involved lying on the floor with my eyes shut and a swimming cap over my hair trying to ensure that all the parts of my face I needed for the sculpt were fully covered.

You are my hero ISV Venture Star! That takes a lot of time, patience, knowledge, trial and error, and just plain want and guts. When you come to Seattle you must show me how to do that.

The guy who does me has all the knowledge and experience that you do, but he is very busy. I hope to catch him between shoots.

Sarah, what kind of wig do you have. Of all the ones I've seen, I like yours the best.

Thank you very much, I bought it from the french quarter in a wig store called Fi Fi Mahony's. I can't find my specific wig on their website though. I'm not sure what it's made of, but I'm pretty sure it's high quality synthetic since she said I can't use blow driers or curlers or it'll melt. Not that I'd ever curl it anyway. It cost about 50$. I'll go look for the box it came in, and post more information if I find it.

When buying a wig, really the best thing to do is to go to a proper wig store, most general costume stores only sell lesser quality wigs because most people don't care how good their one time Halloween costume is. Fi Fi Mahony's caters to a lot of drag queens who take their wigs very seriously. It's also very important to physically touch the wig and possibly try it on before buying it, so I'd still suggest a store opposed to buying one online.

I'll talk about the specifics of the queue later in another post, I've got some stuff to do.

MOMS Ball Avatar 07-29-2011 03:26 AM

Thanks Sarah! I've gone to Fifi Mahony's. I got that LED light there. You're right. I have a Jake wig from BuyComtumes.com. It's okay, but yours is so much better. The hair is smoother, finer, and falls down around the shoulders better. Did you get your braids there too? How did you attach them? Can or did they attach them.

I'm lucky I live here. I get to go to Fifi's in person.

Also if you go out somewhere in a dark room or at night you can get a LED fiber light. You can put it in your hair and make it look like a Woodsprite. There's many different colors, I got white. Some even flash or change colors. Google LED

Fiyerwall 07-30-2011 03:20 AM

Irayo for the info Sarah! I'll look it up and see what I can find. And take your time on finding the box.

MOMS: If you do happen to go to Fifi's, would you mind looking around there for me? Just to see what they have and what they cost. :)

Thank Sarah for going to the trouble of setting up a blog for Avatar Cosplay. It will make it easier for other people to do and understand. That was a lot of work (fun)? Sharing your knowledge and experience makes the number of Na'vi coming to Seattle, and where ever, greater.

I only saw one cat. On the blog you said Cat(s). :airquote:::xD:He (she) is pretty though.

Fyerwall. Google Fifi Mahony's New Orleans. They have 90% of what's there on line, except prices. Call for that. I'm going to go there in the next couple of weeks. I'm bringing in my Jake wig and get them to do a better one. I'll let you know how much that costs. If you want to send me a picture of what you would like I'll bring it into them and get an idea and a price. They are very good at what they do.

Great post Sarah!

Also, is it just me, or is this not the awesome-st photo?

Yes, the pants go nicely :)

mikkowilson 07-30-2011 08:51 PM

It's fun because everything around it is so normal (candid, un-setup), it doesn't make the tail seem abnormal.

The messy room and the PJ's help "sell it" as real.

That is one of my favorite tutorial photos so far, I've been waiting forever for someone to comment on it unsolicited when it was on Learn Na'vi. Thanks Mikko, you made my day.

Pa'li Makto 07-31-2011 03:06 AM

I have a great idea for a tail, but I'll have to wait and test it out.

@MOM: If you wouldn't mind getting a price range for me, that would be great. I'm essentially looking for something like what Sarah has. I think it looks very natural and I love it.

FiFi Mahony's is a great store, but they have terrible mark-ups like every single other store in the french quarter. I went there because it was on the streetcar route and I primarily get around by public transit. Before you buy through them I'd really stress looking for nice wigs in your area, being able to try them on before purchasing is invaluable. If you are considering buying from FiFi Mahony's think about shopping around for a better price online, since you're not going to be able to try on wigs either way.

http://shop.cosplay.com/wigs.html is a pretty good online wig store. Cosplay.com understands customers want better quality costume wigs for a reasonable price. You can also go here: http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=156036 where there are a ton of pictures of the wigs from their store on costumers who've sent in pictures.

Bwahahahaha, I just realized what the pattern on those pajamas was.

Wakey wakey, teylu n' yerik!

So I went on a bike ride today to an aquarium store, and I saw an old costume shop that I thought had died a long time ago, but seems to have merely changed hands/owners.

I might have to poke around in there a bit soon... >.>

I'm just trying to get an idea of what's out there and what they cost before I actually make a purchase. I went into Sally's Beauty Supply today and saw the coolest thing. They had a black jumbo braid for only $2! It looked very realistic and it went all the way down to my butt! :D It looked EXACTLY like a queue! :shoop: I might just get a plain black wig and attach that braid to it. Can't beat the price. :D

Care to post a pic of your new queue? Ha, that sounds exactly like the one I upgraded to after my yarn queue. It's called Kanekalon Jumbo Braid isn't it, with a sort of orange and red label? It makes a great first queue, but it'll fray real bad after a few uses (braiding it tightly will make it last a bit longer), at which point I'd suggest upgrading to the Toykolon 27" hair packs, 3 packs for a total of 9ish dollars. 2 packs for 6 works too, but it's a bit smaller queue then. This is just what I've learned, but your mileage my very, do what you prefer. For suggestions about attaching queues to wigs there's a section in my blog.

I went to Fifi Mahony's. I brought a picture of Jake and Neytiri in. The guy I needed to talk to is Brian. He is only there Monday through Wednesday. His schedule floats. A standard would be about $50. A custom will all of the braids and pigtail would be from $95-$120. By the time you buy of of the extra hair to make the pigtail, and braids it's only about $25-30 more. Of course it depends on what you use for hair. ect. If you have more time you could do it yourself. I usually don't and I'm not as good at it as Sarah is.

Fiyerwall 08-03-2011 03:29 AM

Irayo to you both, Sarah and MOMS, for all the helpful information. :D

Sarah, it was the Kanekalon braid that I saw! I haven't gotten it yet; I'm still searching around to see what's out there. I'm also going back and forth on what I want to use. I can't make up my mind. :P

It was warm enough for me to get away with a bathing suit and loincloth, should be similar next year.
