My first glow plants

It took me a while to perfect, but now I can make blue, green, teal, and violet glow plants. They recharge in the sunlight and last several hours into the night each night. In the day, they look like normal plants, but at night...

Came out better than I imagined. Everyone who sees them wants me to make them a set! I want a whole back yard full of these eventually.

iron_jones 09-04-2011 02:28 AM

Seems we have a mad scientist on our hands.
Radioactive plants, eh?

In all seriousness that's friggen awesome, dude.
And, are you a horse?

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-04-2011 02:30 AM

The flowers are not radioactive, nor am I a horse! :shoop:

iron_jones 09-04-2011 02:33 AM

how do you make these lovely things?

tm20 09-04-2011 02:59 AM

I WANT THEM O____O im guessing you used glow in the dark paint, or you inserted a bioluminescent gene into their genome and it was a GREAT SUCCESS ^_^

Pa'li Makto 09-04-2011 04:04 AM

WOW!! Looks amazing!

Human No More 09-05-2011 12:36 AM

I want some! :D

Looks like glow paint, I think. Very nice though :)

Raiden 09-05-2011 02:08 AM

Looks like paint to me...but it is very convincing if it is.

Most forms of bioluminesence really can't be genetically engineered yet...

X.,.Pandora.,.X 09-05-2011 02:58 AM

:stare: How? I want to know NAOW!

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-05-2011 10:19 PM

I'm actually approaching this from several different fronts.

I know of 3 different instances where scientists have added bioluminescent genes to plants. It is a very difficult undertaking. I do have a BS in Biochem so I understand the difficulties involved, though it would make for a fun challenge at some point in the near future.

The problem with glow paint is that painting doesn't look natural. It has streaks and doesn't transition well between colors. I had to find a solution that made the colors transition naturally while adding texture, and glow paint wasn't an answer.

I also love to work with LEDs. They will also be an important component of my yard. The key is to hide them so you never see them, only the light bouncing off plants. LEDs are fun, in fact I put ~900 of them on my car: 1999 Eclipse LED tail lights - YouTube Yes all parts of my life must have craziness in them.

I might start selling them, if people here are interested.

X.,.Pandora.,.X 09-05-2011 10:26 PM

O.o Did you make those tail-lights?

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-06-2011 03:00 AM

Yes I made those tail-lights too.

Hunter of the Glade 09-06-2011 03:05 AM

O.o speechless.

Fiyerwall 09-06-2011 03:33 AM

SWEET. Those plants are awesome! :shoop: The LED lights on the car are pretty cool too. I've been looking to see if anyone could come up with an idea on how to make lamps that look like they're from Pandora. Do you think that could be possible?

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-06-2011 05:04 AM

EVERYTHING is possible. We are humans, we can do anything we set our mind to :) I bet I could make a pandora lamp. I was thinking of doing this with banana leaves, to mimic the ones Netiri ducked under when she was walking away from Jake. They made her jewelry glow - awesome effect.

What I need is find really long leaves, so I can duplicate the war bonnet plants. Those are my fav.

Moco Loco 09-06-2011 05:42 AM

Cool stuff bro. I want to have a huge party some day in a yard full of plants like that :D

I like your attitude!:) The war bonnet is one of my favorites as well. If you go to my albums, you can see where I actually have a tattoo of one.

Riebs 09-08-2011 03:24 AM

Man...I want one(or rather, a couple hundred wouuld work too :D)

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-08-2011 09:18 PM

Thanks guys! I've started to do this with other plants now, including hyrdangeas and real cacti.

Do you think people would buy them for $20 a piece? They do take quite a bit of time and resources to make.

iron_jones 09-08-2011 10:01 PM

I'd pay infinity dollars for those.

Human No More 09-09-2011 08:43 PM

That's really cleverly designed - I never suspected that :P

I'm sure people would pay $20 for one... you might find there is too much demand at that point, even.

tyrael 09-10-2011 01:22 PM

It's awesome!

Have you ever tried out / worked with flexible LEDs ? They have an easy control to change LEDs colors up to 16.7 million colors.

amitiri 09-12-2011 08:26 PM

I WANT some, If i could I would 1.ask you to make me some 2.steal them 3.on g knows and make them

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-16-2011 05:25 AM

I've looked at flexible LEDs, but haven't found any use for them yet.

I actually have improved the design even more, my brother took some great pics with his SLR. Everyone who has seen them in person absolutely loves them! I shipped some out today, and the girls at UPS went crazy for them, hehe.

I know you guys love the plants of Pandora just as much as me, so if anyone wants a calla lili, $25 plus shipping, or 40 for two. Just tell me what primary color you would like (violet, blue, or green). Roses, hydrangeas, or silver dollar plants will be a little more. Note that white plants will be brighter at night than those with day time colors. I will custom make one specially for you and add other colors to highlight the primary and make it look natural. Prices are super fair for the costs I've put into this so far. Send me a message if you are interested.

100% of proceeds will be used to take this project to the next level, so I can bring your back yard as close as possible to pandora. Just wait until you see the next step, hehe. But that's going to take me some time. If you are in SoCal I can show you what they look like in person.

Simple, they recharge by sunlight, and they glow at night. If you have a black light at home, you will get an astonishingly bright glow if you charge it with the light for 60 seconds and then turn off the black light. I can find my way around the house with a single flower at night, if I charge it up with a black light for a minute!

UV light charges up the violet color much better than ordinarly light bulbs, unless you have like a halogen light bulb and you've removed the uv protective glass over the bulb.

I have always been a big fan of the 2nd gen eclipses... too bad its not a GS-T or GS-X but sir you have built that car up right... i heard LED taillights and honestly thought "Oh no" thinking back to those hideous ricer LEDs, but no sir you proved me wrong you went way custom with them and i like it! and the plants look amazing too!

Oh i see you threw in a turbo anyways =D btw whats the name of the songs in the movie?

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-17-2011 06:55 PM

Thanks man. Yea a lot of people think that a GST or GSX is the only way to go. Until they see what a RS can do with forged internals and a turbo. The fact that a RS can have a 700 lbs weight advantage over a GSX means a LOT for acceleration, handling, and braking. The manufacturer of my turbo kit got his daily driven RS into the 10s. How much faster does a guy need to go in a daily driver? :awesome:

I forget the name of the first song, but the last song is from a group out of Japan - Aural Vampire. Don't remember the first one, I have to search.

haha i havent done much research in the 2nd gen world for a while since getting my car but you have given me great facts! i remember back when i was looking for cars there was a GS-T Spyder, perfect condition inside and out with 80,000 miles for 10k... i wanted it so badly xD would've been my weekend cruiser probably wouldn't have modded it but yuo have a fantastic car sir

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-29-2011 11:56 PM

Thanks man.

Well, I opened up a little shop on Etsy. Only listed one flower so far, if it sells I will list more. Girls flip out everytime they see them - I mailed a set the other day and the girls at the UPS store went wild over them :shoop: I'm wondering if this would be a hot valentines day seller.

Glow in the dark Calla Lily Flower by glowplants on Etsy

Moco Loco 09-30-2011 12:15 AM

I might be afraid to buy live plants online :S They look great though.

Ikran_is_not_horse 09-30-2011 02:26 AM

They are not live, they are artificial.

Moco Loco 09-30-2011 03:29 AM

Wha wha? I feel dumb :xD: So these are like decorative plants? How did I miss that :embarrassed:

Fiyerwall 10-01-2011 04:39 AM

As soon as my money situation straightens out, I'm definitely going to be getting one of these. :)

Human No More 10-02-2011 06:54 PM

I'll order myself some when I can, maybe in a week or so :)

GhostTiger 10-03-2011 05:44 AM

Oh my gosh, I want one!!! lol I'm also adding you to my Etsy. I just started one recently for a bunch of random crafts I do. Actually, I created a blog to go with it. I might have to talk about this over there too if that's okay with you?

Ikran_is_not_horse 10-04-2011 03:33 AM

Yea of course be my guest. Once things get on the internet, they have a tendency to float around the world. I got an invite to some circle thing today on etsy - that must be you! I don't know what the circle means though.

Let me know what colors you all would be interested in.

GhostTiger 10-04-2011 04:30 AM

That would in fact be me. lol It's just like a friend request. I'm still figuring Etsy out myself, but so far so good.

I'm all about the purple and green, but I'm betting blue and red would go over well too.

Ikran_is_not_horse 10-06-2011 05:36 AM

Green is brightest, purple lasts the longest, but blue is my favorite color. Unfortunately the technology is not there yet for a long lasting red color. I've tried red and was not impressed with the results. It took a lot of experimentation to get to something that made me go "WOW!"
