Dinosaur feathers found in amber

Amazing find of feathers incased in amber from the age of the dinosaurs:

Quote:

A stunning array of prehistoric feathers, including dinosaur protofeathers, has been discovered in Late Cretaceous amber from Canada.

The 78 to 79-million-year-old amber preserved the feathers in vivid detail, including some of their diverse colors. The collection, published in this week's Science, is among the first to reveal all major evolutionary stages of feather development in non-avian dinosaurs and birds.

Really stunning finds that bring us closer to a time when our world was more like Pandora.

Its quite amazing that these feathers have been untouched and unaltered since the mesozoik era, a time when giant animals made the earth shake, giant creatures roamed the seas and amazing reptiles flew in the sky.

Maybe some of the protofeathers came from creatures like this:

Goodness gracious. How cool!

Human No More 12-03-2011 06:24 PM

Amazing :)

I find it really interesting to think of how they were once part of an animal :)

Pa'li Makto 12-05-2011 06:42 AM

I think the feathers look fantastic. It's amazing to think that they have been preserved for all this time. :)

Moco Loco 12-05-2011 02:33 PM

This isn't the first time dino feathers have been found, is it?

Darn it am I going to have to change my plans again? Argg guess its back to Paleontology as my planned career!

Theorist 12-05-2011 07:37 PM

I know what ya mean cyvaris, it's like I wana learn everything. It's like doe I study dinosaurs, physics, ecology, mechanical engineering, engineering physics, environmental engineering... it's so f*cking hard to choose!

Oh I'm not much of a history guy, or computers, those kinda bore me. It's strictly the majors/subjects I mentioned.

But on another note: Project Free TV :: Planet Dinosaur :: Season 1

watched all but #2 today. Kinda sad I can't watch it anymore though, cause I watched it all. Anyway, pretty good dinosaur tv show.

Cyvaris 12-06-2011 03:38 AM

I am between Creative Writing(fat lot of good that will do...though I do have outlines for something like nine novels floatin about), Law-Environmental Law, or Paleontology.

And I have 3 semesters left to decide....argg.

@Clarke...is it bad I read that last line in River's voice?

Most earlier finds have been in the form of petrified remains and impressions in rocks. One example is the remains of the small theropod Sinosauropteryx from China which is preserved with something that most researchers interpret as feathers or protofeathers.

That is so cool. :awesome:

Human No More 12-07-2011 12:16 AM

Look at the scale... amazing :)
People always portray dinosaurs as huge, but they came in so many different adaptations.

Pa'li Makto 12-07-2011 05:41 AM

True. :)

Velociraptors for example are only the height of a large chicken (2-3ft).
There are a lot of different dinosaurs in here: http://www.dinodictionary.com/dinos_uv.asp
It's good to see a scale included as well.

Here is another artistic rendering of the small chinese dinosaur Sinosauropteryx whos petrified remains I showed you above. This rendering is from a charming childrens book:

I always used to wonder what color certain dinosaurs were :) I had some plastic figures when I was younger, and I used to think, How does anyone know?

Theorist 12-09-2011 10:09 PM

I used to think the same thing when I was a kid Moco. I bet they probably camoflauged with their sorroundings pretty well, although I saw that some, like oviraptor might have been brightly colored like peacocks, which is cool.

Now a new feathered dinosaur has been found. It is more distantly related to birds than most other known and its also older than most of them. The new dinosaur is from the Jura period and found in Germany. It is preserved in limestone and its feathery filaments are still visible.

New Feathered Theropod Dinosaur Found in Germany

An international team of paleontologists has discovered a new species of feathered dinosaur in southern Germany.

The fossil of Sciurumimus albersdoerferi, which lived about 150 million years ago, provides the first evidence of feathered theropod dinosaurs that are not closely related to birds.

Adaptation is amazing. Also, an interesting idea, possible feather-like structures in others - I wonder if that's going to be studied further now.

Raiden 07-06-2012 12:12 AM

But...butbut...but...

I liked my scaly behemoths...now they look like they're wearing sweaters or something. :<
