“Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie or epic battles. In its place, we have vampires that sparkle, moan and go to high school...”

...also, Buffy and Blade fans :P
I'm in. *grabs phaser rifle and bat'leth*

George Takei FTW :P

This news is much better than the military giving tanks to the police, or North Korea having doomsday devices

Isard 12-13-2011 02:53 AM

Oh my...

Advent 12-13-2011 03:07 AM

Well this is.. interesting. :P

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't overjoyed at the news, but they could've been rallying for something far more important, in my opinion...

Most of the time he's making witty comments about bigots and promoting gay rights.

[Ripley] I say we take off and nuke the sparkly vampires from orbit. It's the only way to be sure [/Ripley]

Now where's my Starfleet-issue lightsaber and my Jedi combadge?

There will always be garbage entertainment that is popular for one reason or another, and rallying against it is just silly. After all, we have things like reality TV...

Clarke 12-17-2011 07:43 PM

To be fair, Twilight is arguably worse than shallow garbage. When you analyse it, it contains and seems to promote some fairly disturbing ideas, especially in the case of Breaking Dawn

Aquaplant 12-17-2011 08:07 PM

Well I don't really know anything about Twilight other than what I've heard, that it's really bad. Perhaps I should educate myself by watching the movies, unless the stupidity within is of 'my brain hurts' variety.

Are we talking about the books or the movies?

Clarke 12-17-2011 09:11 PM

Both; it's more focused on how the characters interact, and how the story works.

(Although there is equal flak for stuff like the "west coast of Brazil." Go on, get a map, I'll wait. :D)

Aquaplant 12-17-2011 10:42 PM

I'm afraid you lost me there.

Not having read it myself I can only admit this is second hand, but I have heard it's heavily 'christian marriage is good and everything else is evil' as well as misogynistic to a degree (that women need a man to do everything for her, etc), even before getting into various stalkerish things that the vampire does.

Also second hand since I haven't watched the Twilight movies, but.....

Warning: Very spoiler heavy.

That's funny, because I was about to say that there are far more dangerous things in the world to be rallied against that influence people to do certain things regardless of how they personally might feel about them, and unfortunately organized religion is one of the worst these days.

Besides, it's hip to dis people who are into Twilight, but it's politically incorrect to dis people who derive their sense of morality and what they are allowed to do from religious dogma. I know I've personally been really mean to all things religion, and it has to do with my hatred of what the organized variety does to humanity. I have nothing against spirituality, because semantics aside, I think that's something we all do, but we just have different ways of putting it to words.

Well at least I know now that I don't want to have anything to do with the Twilight series, but I'm not going to support telling people what content they should or shouldn't enjoy, because even if it is deliberately unethical like that, then it's still about stepping on the personal freedom to do stuff. If people want to get influenced by detrimental material, it's their prerogative, because it's an ethically grey area. On the other hand you would want to diminish the amount of "bad" influences in any environment, because it might detract from the general well being of the populace, but there's no real way of telling when you enter the 1984 territory.

'Tis a very difficult subject to say the least.
