I was majorly disappointed with the first film, and not from a oh-there-was-no-gore-in-it-so-therefore-it's-crap perspective. The first film failed as a psychological horror/thriller as it was so damn predictable. I could leave the room in the intervals between night in the movie and come back and not miss a thing. It severly lacked the ability to maintain audience interest.

Another thing. At the night scenes in the film where all the 'spooky' stuff takes place, the camera that was filming the characters always showed the door of the bedroom to be open, you could peer into the hallway outside and into the other rooms. Now, if I wanted to make a tense situation, or instill much-needed feelings of fear in the audience I'd have used the background more. Every time I was looking outside the bedroom for an odd shadow or the little things that could've moved, suggesting that trouble was on its way. Nothing happened. Nothing. I kept saying 'Awww' after every night scene where the background went completely to waste.

That's the thing though. You were probably watching it as a movie (at least, that's what I'm sensing from what you wrote), and you were looking for what was going to happen (also the same reason why many people didn't like Avatar). I was watching it as an experience; I tried to put myself into the place of the characters. And I disagree; much happened.

But still, I stand corrected about my assertion on gore/cheap thrill horror-goers. You're obviously not one. :)

Yeah I guess it's just how you position yourself in the movie experience (in Avatar I had no choice, I was completely and utterly immersed). I was watching this from a critical point of view, I had heard good and bad things (one good thing I heard that it was a movie 'that scared Steven Spielberg' - not sure how that gave me any perspective on how scary it would be) so I was pretty distant from immersion.

I guess if I'd have had a better experience if I never knew anything of the movie beforehand.

I need to watch that movie.
I might see Quadrophenia again as well.

Empty Glass 02-24-2011 05:41 AM

Yes! :D Watch Quadrophenia again! Been on the verge of doing that myself, as I've been listening to all my old mod tunes again...

But yeah, Food Inc. is quite a film, and not afraid to be a little disturbing. Definitely makes me more motivated to go shop at the local farmer's market next time.

Been almost a decade since I've watched Food Inc.

Never forgot it, though.

:D Will do, I love that movie.
Sounds interesting, I'll get to watching it.

I saw Pineapple Express today. It was better than I thought it would be.

Just finished Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno). More violent than what I was expecting, but wow...easily one of the best films I've seen lately. I was actually tearing up a little bit.

Just saw Let Me In a few days ago. I was expecting a B-movie but it was actually pretty good. I enjoyed this movie way better than the twilight flicks.

American Psycho,
American Beauty and
Scott Pilgrim.

Oh and Paul. I saw it in the cinema yesterday and I thought it was great. Hilarious with adequate and humerous references to every major Sci-Fi film from the last 50 years. Worth paying to see!

Woodsprite 02-25-2011 10:47 PM

Angels & Demons again. I'm loving it more and more...

Wonderful movie. :)

And an even more wonderful soundtrack - it's insanely beautiful. :D

For me it's quite the opposite.

Avatar served as a kind of reminder how much I value escapism, even though I lost interest in Avatar a long time ago, since it just doesn't have anything to offer anymore. The problem with escapism is that one can't really dwell on anything for too long, because it's like a drug and the same **** just doesn't cut it anymore. Must consume new content, different content and most importantly, content that's not from the real world.
