Has Avatar changed the decor inside your house

I'm curious if any of you have chanced the insides of your house or apartment as a result of seeing Avatar?
My sweetie pie and I are putting strings of white LED's inside white, not clear plastic tubing, and suspending it from the ceiling over our Queen sized bed. When done, they will dangle down to within two feet of the surface of the bed.
That way we can sleep under the "Tree of voices" every night.

As seen from Pandora? Yes.

I've got some posters and flyers around, but not much more.

ahoragi 01-03-2012 02:10 AM

Since the movie, my apartment has become a jungle lol. I got plants everywhere now.

I just ordered this (60" size) a couple days ago and it's going right next to my bed:

Now this beautiful nature will be the first thing I see when I wake up and last thing I see when I go to bed. :)

This sentiment is why I have learned to hate the winter. I have not redecorated my home, but after Avatar, I gained an appreciation for nature in general and the view from my window. To the point where during the spring and summer I'll find myself just staring out the window. There are a few buildings that obstruct some of the treeline, but not nearly enough that it damages the view.

When the fall comes, I tend to get a bit sad because while the multicolored trees are quite beautiful, it means for the next five months, I have lost that view.

Pa'li Makto 01-03-2012 05:29 AM

Wow..Those decorations look so beautiful. :D Even posters can bring out a great Pandoran look. :) I have one of those Avatar Flying posters but apart from that I suppose since Avatar I look for pretty, bright things to decorate my shelf with. :D

Raiden 01-03-2012 06:23 AM

Decorations?

No...

But the Begonia is 3 feet tall, my Epipremnum aureum plants are getting ever larger, and my new cacti are doing well, as are the carnivorous plants, fish, lizards, turtle, snakes, tarantulas, frogs, salamanders, and anyone I forgot to mention.

So no, no changes so far.

This is how I've always been, after all.

2 Posters and a calendar that has recently become obsolete.

Niri Te 01-03-2012 07:11 AM

When we get it up and running, I'll take an available light, (just the tendrils of the tree), photo of the effect.

Nice! Must've been a challenge to get it just right.

As for me, no I haven't redecorated my room, but when I get my own place... plants, posters, and RGB leds everywhere. :D

Helicoradian 01-03-2012 10:19 AM

It hasn't changed the inside really, but i'm not the decorating type. Instead I go for practicality over looks...think floor, largest shelf in the entire house :D (I kid, sorta)

Susano'o 01-03-2012 11:13 AM

Hell yeah. :) It's my link unit. :P

There's a new 2012 Avatar calender on Amazon if you want to renew it.

Amazon.com: Avatar 2012 Wall Calendar (9780810997714): Twentieth Century Fox: Books

I got it and it's pretty damn cool. I love how it tells part of the story on each month.

auroraglacialis 01-03-2012 06:15 PM

Decoration, not that much. I already had a dozen plants in there before and blue-green-earthen batique cloth around the sleeping place. What is definitely new is the blue hammock that I sleep in about 75% of the nights ;)

Human No More 01-04-2012 02:16 AM

I have some Neytiri posters I made; I have some more Avatar posters but they aren't up as I need frames for them. There's also Neytiri's knife :), and I have the Neytiri statue, although it is currently not out due to a lack of room :(

There is also my Avatar stuff collection, although not instantly visible. Multiple DVDs and blurays, 2 copies of the survival guide, 2 tshirts, some promo stuff from the bluray release, The Art of Avatar, the Making of Avatar, the 3D Collector's Vault, and the collector's edition :), plus probably some other stuff I forgot to mention.

Thanks to not owning my place, I can't do any modifications, preventing me from painting the walls or similar, and lack of space prevents having a hammock :(

My statue is not actually out due to space, but here it is:

Here is the wallmonkeys decal that I mentioned a few posts above. The quality of the image is amazing for such a huge picture.

I'm definately gonna order some more decals but this time i'm submitting some avatar images for them to print for me! Gonna be cool! Maybe I'll order a 7' image of Ney! lol

Here's the newest member of our jungle that recently brought home a few days ago.

http://i693.photobucket.com/albums/v...t/DSCF7830.jpg

I specifically chose this plant because it has 4 plants in a square pattern. I got plans to let it grow a little bit more and then add these glowing mushrooms that I bought on Amazon a while back. Gonna put them smack in the middle of the four plants and they will glow and illuminate the area. I think it'll be neat.

Niri Te 01-04-2012 07:01 AM

That sounds like a great idea ahoragi !

If you bought what I think you bought, you might want to rethink it.

Your mushrooms are most likely something in the genus Omphalotus, which, if I am not mistaken, prefer to grow on rotten wood (or at least some species do).

Also, they do not produce that much light. The reaction that takes place in this species is between the enzyme Luciferase and its substrate molecule, a protein called Luciferin. Unfortunately, this reaction does not put off enough light energy to light up rooms. Finally, they don't last long. Mushrooms are merely the final form of the reproductive structures of fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota, and only stick around for a short while until they die and rot, often attracting flies and beetles, which dine on the rotting tissue inside the stem and base of the mushroom.

The other thing is that you probably shouldn't be trying to grow them in a potted plant, especially one that was purchased from your average supermarket. They often come with plenty of fungicides, insecticides, and other chemicals still on them/in the soil that would kill the fungus. Also, there is most likely a whole host of other fungi and microorganisms in the soil, many of which would probably love to make a meal out of fungal hyphae.

Finally, fungi prefer to grow in dark, moist places; not on a windowsill or in the kitchen, where many people put potted plants. Potted plants also dislike the conditions that fungus likes, so you can't just put the whole thing in the shade.

The solution? Look up info about how to grow mushrooms. Most species will grow in a soil/leaf litter/rotten wood mix, which is relatively easy to make, even if you live far away from a proper forest. Grow it in a dark place, and devise some sort of plastic cover to keep moisture in but can be removed to ensure proper ventilation is supplied (or else you'll have dead, moldy mushrooms, if anything at all).

That should help you out with the mushrooms. PM me with pictures, if you don't mind; I was planning on buying some spores myself, and I wanted to know how well they really worked, as some kits like these for other things are ripoffs.

Anyway, since I didn't want to derail the thread, I also wanted to add that fish would be another cool way to spruce up a room, especially since you can grow plants in their tanks with ease; if Lahea would actually come online again, I would see if he could post some pictures of his very well done amazon-biotope planted fishtank.

ahoragi 01-04-2012 11:22 AM

Thanks for that info Raiden but I was actually referring to the fake mushrooms (solar/electric powered). I got two on Amazon, one solar and one electric, that are pretty neat at night time. They sorta remind you of Avatar. I don't really like the pot they are built in so I figured I'd tear it apart and fix it inside my real plants for decorative purposes. Of course I gotta water-proof the wiring but nothing I ain't familiar with (waterproofing my RC's for mud runs was a hobby).

I did consider the mushrooms you were speaking about a while ago but decided my place just ain't the right place to attempt to grow some so I gave up on the idea and just been sticking with collecting odd or cool looking plants. I really dig watching a little plant mature into a tree. It's just an amazing thing to watch over time, just like kids.

1.5 years later....

Unfortunately sometimes the plants get a little big and I have to give em away to those who have room for em but I never destroy what I grow. :)

Answer to the OP; As of yet, only posters and 3D screens from the film... but I hope to get some more substantial projects underway soon. That is - if I can convince myself that my flatmates at Uni won't think i'm crazier than I let on to be.

auroraglacialis 01-08-2012 01:03 AM

this one is new after avatar:

Don't worry about that... do it :P

Actually, if costume props can be counted as decoration, I do have a bit, including my wig, braid, and exopack.
