Skiing

It's that time of year again.

Anybody ski or board here?

Moco Loco 01-04-2012 10:01 PM

Man, I wish, but I live in the opposite climate for it, completely flat, erratic temperature changes :(

versicolor 01-04-2012 10:14 PM

That's too bad but hey, you live in the best country in the world for winter sport. Maybe one year you'll travel north and experience it for yourself:)

BTW I've been to your home town, a couple of years before Katrina though.
Had a great time:cool:

Hope things have got back to normal for all you guys there now.

Were you skiing in Alaska in that pic?
Poor visibility that day for you.

Yeah, that's our local ski area here in Juneau http://www.skijuneau.com

And that's not *that* bad weather for here. :)

Man, what I would give to have a 'local ski area'.

You lucky swine!:P

Enjoy the skiing:)

I cross country ski some times. I have downhill skied before, but its not my thing. :)

Haha, done probably most of the things you can do in that respect at least once. Skiing since I was about 4 or so, boarding since about 1989 after I also did monoskiing (if anyone still knows what that is) and tried short-ski and telemark. I did a little bit of X-country skiing and twice I did skitours, one time I did a snowshoe-2-dayhike with sleeping in an igloo. I love going away from the paved slopes if it is possible, but once I broke a bone out there, that was not good. In recent years, I dont have the money or friends that would share a ride though. Also I am a bit less happy about all those large modifications they do to the mountains, so I actually want to go more for occasional ski tours. What I did not do: heliskiing (in a way this is marvellous, in so many other ways it is so wrong :P ) and those weird things with ski you sit on.
The mountains are not far away from here, maybe 50 km. Sadly transportation here is more expensive, so that translates to about 20€ ($25) for gasoline in a car or about 15€ for a train ticket. Plus the 40-50€ for the dayticket if one uses lifts.

A man after my own heart!
Sounds like you've been around as long as I have and tried all there was to try: a true seasoned skier.

Yep, tried a monoski once or twice but never got the hang of them. Pretty lethal if you ask me! (Perhaps that's why you don't really see them about anymore!)

Also remember when boards first started appearing on the slopes. I did convert for a few years but eventually went back to skiing.

Would probably struggle with re-adapting to a board now-a-days.:D

auroraglacialis 02-03-2012 11:34 PM

Haha - monoski is funny - but yeah, it is not really so practicable. Not that dangerous I think though. The do have bindings that will release when one does fall, just like in ski.

I did snowboard teaching for a while, which was also fun. I also broke a leg snowboarding some double-diamond powder snow slope, which was not at all fun.

I just ordered myself some touring skis last week. Lets see if I can manage to walk up some hills and ski down :)

Fighter-of-Wars 02-03-2012 11:40 PM

I have been skiing 3 times, there is a place about 1.5 hours away that makes snow and its's about 15 second-1 minute slopes, it's very fun and I'm starting to get the hang of it better, no more pizza shaped stops :P

Skiing? Hell yeah
Right now, I live an hour away from the real best area for skiing, The Three Valleys, France.

I got some new skis this season, regretting getting them so short but who cares? They're twin tips!

I basically grew up learning to ski there.

I did some skiing, and then some!!
It was really busy and sunny so by the afternoon all the lower areas were slush and bumps.

I also fell over a bit at the top of Meribel (~3000m) and hurt my knee :(
Couldn't turn properly for about an hour and a half
