Thanks for posting Susano'o, that really looks promising!
Awesome looking landscape in that clip, i'm going to have to do my best to get even close to that :)
Hope they manage a complete fan film in that quality, would be awesome!

Good time for a little update aswell, I'm still hard at work on my animation. Finally dared showing the "complete" animation from start to end to some people. Gladly people were pretty positive and I got some good feedback aswell.
Since character feel and interaction is one of my practice goals I also decided to add a kiss to the animation.
Well, atleast give it a try! Certainly the hardest bit of animation i did sofar, so easy to get stuck in the uncanny valley. But i'm still going to try it, here's where i am sofar :)
The pupils are placeholders for the actual eyes since those are only visible when renderend.

PS im still working / struggling with this so if you have feedback i'd love to hear :)

Looks great, as always. Eywa ngahu.:)

Pa'li Makto 07-13-2013 08:34 AM

Any progress Fierox?

fierox 07-14-2013 03:08 AM

Well i'm animating the last scenes now, pretty soon the animation part is done.
Its pretty intense but its great fun to do, will really miss this part! Really improved while animating so i actually have to get back to the first bits for a few small fixes.
Then i have to tweak the hair, cloth and other dynamic items and cache them.
All the camera angles are already done so third would be creating all the backgrounds and light the scenes.
At work i actually met some people who work with audio pretty proffesionally that offered to help and gave some tips.
Already have alot of the lipsync done so i dont want to change too much on that part :)

Anyway, this evening i took a little break and made a quick 3d printmodel out of Neytiri's head.
Uploaded it to shapeways and will see they can print it. Ordered it little over 2" (6 cm) high as a cheap test.
If everything works out ill post it here in a week or two, Fun!

The shapeway image

Pa'li Makto 07-14-2013 04:27 AM

Nice work! I didn't think you would get back to my post so quickly. :)

I can't wait to see all the little steps that you take towards completing the animation.
Do you have any volunteers to do the audio work for Jake and Neytiri?

fierox 07-14-2013 12:09 PM

Right now i used lines from the movie for the lines of Jake and Neytiri. Took some time collecting and rearranging the bits and then making it sound right. It actually came out better then i expected. Not perfect, especially since i also had to make concessions in the lines because i missed words.
I dont know how it wil be like if people record it. It would loose some Jake and Neytiri resemblence but it could also add alot more feel, dept and better lines...
I'd love to try but i dont have any volunteers for that and my own voice in english, well my dutch accent would make that completely wrong!
So if anyone or you yourself would like to give it a try that would be fun :D

Raiden 07-16-2013 01:56 AM

Good luck with that.

You'd need someone with a somewhat deep, masculine voice with an "american" accent, and then a female person who can imitate Neytiri.

Human No More 07-16-2013 08:54 PM

I wonder how long the render will take :P

Also, 3D printed Neytiri - do want :P

fierox 07-16-2013 10:03 PM

Yeah its not easy to get proper voices. im glad i was able to get some from the movie. It actually worked out reasonably good :) it would be fun to try record actual voices but for now i can move on.
I'm trying to get the hot toys jake a little cheap, take it apart, and then 3d print my neytiri model in the same style (with joints). Fun side project!

Raiden 07-17-2013 03:04 AM

You know, I bet you could make your own Avatar movie with voices from people in the community.

Would be interesting, although I understand that it would also require a lot of effort on your part.

Human No More 07-19-2013 12:28 AM

Neytiri might be a little difficult to do. Jake's accent is slightly unusual (or sounds so to me, anyway - American but with a little bit of Australian sound), but maybe not quite as hard.

Alan 07-21-2013 11:05 AM

Seen your stuff above Firefox. It's looking Txantsan! Maybe you could do an AvatarMeet animated trailer some day, with people from the forum? ;)

I'm off to this year's meet up on Monday. :hi:

Well an animation might be a bit much (takes me far too long) but if you like a certain pose you can use or Ney and Jake with a name or logo i'd love to help out.
Enjoy seeing the pictures of the meetings! Should there ever be one in the Netherlands i'd surely join :D

fierox 11-26-2013 02:04 AM

Been quite some time since i've posted here.
Project isnt dead tho, actually another round of animation (detail) is done.
Just needs a good bit of tweaking, matching scenes and maybe adding a shot or two.
First i've just started on an ISV like the Venture Star that ill add in my animation aswell. A fun and easy side thing before i start on tweaking animation :)
I dont have detailed images from all the angles so it wont be 100% exact but hopefully i can keep it pretty close. Its meant to be a different craft anyway and i guess on a project that massive ships would probably be a little different from each other anyway :P
Here is the first bit, the engine's radiator and the first bits of the antimatter engine.

fierox 12-04-2013 02:59 AM

A few more parts added, like the ant-matter engines and the fuel cells..

Alan 12-04-2013 04:57 AM

Wow! They are looking txantsan ma tsmukan! :hi:

Alan

ahoragi 12-04-2013 01:41 PM

Lookin good! That must be alot of work.

fierox 12-04-2013 10:36 PM

Thanks!
Yeah it takes a good amount of time but its kinda easy and relaxed to do :)
Added a bit more stuff like the mast, heat shields and cargo.
Now to add the Valkyrie shuttles, that will be fun!

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...ox-d6wqlgy.jpg

fierox 12-07-2013 01:11 AM

And here's the first bit of the Valkyrie shuttle :)
Compared to the size of the ISV they are so small that only the overal shape is needed but its fun to add some minor details. It actually took a while to get the shape of the fuselage about right but was fun to tinker with, find some resource pics, etc.
Seems there is even a model kit of the shuttle, makes me wonder about the ISV craft, that would be some model!
Now to add the engines and then it should be more or less done..

http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...ox-d6wzgpy.jpg

fierox 12-08-2013 06:18 PM

Here's another update on the Valkyrie Shuttle, for now its about done.
Think it will look great with the big ISV and it should provide a good base if i ever want to turn it into a more detailed craft.

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...ox-d6x7dql.jpg

fierox 12-09-2013 03:18 AM

And here it is with some simple color added :)

http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...ox-d6x9v08.jpg

Now to get back to the ISV itself..

Human No More 12-10-2013 08:22 AM

That is very nice :)

Alan 12-10-2013 10:58 PM

Wow! Looking really good that! Must take a while to do.

Alan

fierox 12-24-2013 01:03 AM

Thanks, and yeah it takes a while but its pretty relaxed to do while watching tv or playing some music :)
The ISV model is more or less done now, just a bit of touching up and adding some color left.
Went a bit further in detail then i originally intended but it has been a very relaxed build sofar.
Besides its a great ship, the realistic design was fun to build.

Oh and its not meant to be the Venture Star but one of its sister ships.
Now to think of good name, any ideas?

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/20...ox-d6z42nj.jpg

Alan 12-24-2013 07:04 AM

Looks txantsan! :hi: How about Intrepid or Vanguard or Fearless...or something... Hehehe. Sorry, I ran out of ideas pretty quickly. Really great model. Ever thought of moving to New Zealand? I've heard they are making a few related film over there ;)

Alan

Exoblade 12-24-2013 09:07 PM

Yes the ISV is a wonderful realistic design. My own grip with the ship is that its got the size of the fuel tanks needed to make it work wrong but to be fair they would look ridiculous compared to the rest of the ship

fierox 12-25-2013 12:31 AM

Thanks for the name suggestions, not bad at all!
Well i'm no expert on matter/antimatter :) but i guess it depends on the mass of the ISV? Lets assume its really light :)
Also the engines are only used for braking and then acceleration on the way back. A giant sail is used aswell.

Then again, i do tend to agree with you, these ships go at 0,7 lightspeed, my guess is the speed is a bit too fast to make it plausible, even with antimatter engines. But if not it would become a complete different story, space is just so damn big!

actually 0.7c is the top most practical speed that you could push a ship. Beyond 0.7c you need more fuel mass than the mass of the rest of the ship to move it. Though of course this means that at 0.7c 50% of the ISV's overall mass has to be in the fuel tanks, which mean they would have to be even bigger. probably to comic proportions.

jackal_moi 03-04-2017 02:22 PM

where can download this 3d models

fierox 03-10-2017 10:31 PM

Hi Jackal_moi. Not sure you got my message on deviantart but no sorry these models cant be downloaded. All the images are downloadable on deviantart tho, without a watermark and often in very high resolution.

And a big update on this short 3D animation. Last year when i started rendering i couldnt find a middle ground between a quick render and keeping the quality high enough. So the images came out flat and i really wasnt happy with it.

So this time i am using renderlayers and composit those into the final images for the animation. Takes a little longer because i have to render all the different layers but at the same quality as earlier it looks so much better! Still taking months tho...

A frame of my animation showing the all different layers (background excluding) that when combined make the image (like color, spec, zdepth, AO and shadow).

Andrew92 03-11-2017 09:05 AM

Very good. But seeing the difference between combined picture and regular render would be great. Can't comment beyond that, never tried to do any composing, I just change shader or lighting values if i don't like something the way it looks.

Neyfan 03-13-2017 11:06 PM

Very cool.

fierox 09-03-2018 12:18 AM

Well the Avatar short i started here quite some time ago is finally done! Was so much fun to make and learned a lot from doing so. Hope you like it :D

Ja'k Dawsiin 09-04-2018 10:56 PM

truly impressive, sir. i felt like i was back on Pandora for a few minutes! to me, you have provided more promotion for the continuing Avatar saga in five minutes, then their sum total for the last eight years! bravo! i appreciate your time and effort, and humbly ask for more please! :)

fierox 09-04-2018 11:19 PM

wow thanks a lot :shy: Glad you liked it, i enjoyed making it. Really learned a lot from it aswell. Making a complete short film and including stuff like backgrounds, camera angles, audio, compositing, managing stuff. That was all pretty new to me and certainly a struggle now and then. But i look forward doing more of it! And yeah Avatar could use some promoting. The new movies are still so far away. If i helped out a tiny bit, well, mission accomplished :)

Alan 09-06-2018 05:21 PM

Amazing work Fierfox:). Like J’ak said, that was a great to watch and be on Pandora again. It was like a teaser for the sequels in a way. I’m sure it will blow you mind if that is how the sequels lead in to the follow on story! Irayo nìtxan ulte Eywa ngahu :)

Haha that would be awesome. And thanks a lot for the compliment, really appreciated! :D

Ja'k Dawsiin 09-14-2018 02:28 AM

i've been keeping an Avatar movie thread alive on the fanforum.com website, where i've been active since AF went off the air, and recently got promoted to Moderator for the Jennifer Lawrence movie forum section. anyway, i posted your Avatar fanfilm there as a youtube item on the thread, and want to say thanks again for your Avatar promotion! the views for the Avatar topic skyrocketed after posting your video!!! maybe we can bring in some new fans for the sequels and ToS. :)
