Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer
Sony today announced the launch of their new HMZ-T1, a personal head-mounted device that offers a spectacular new style for viewing both 2D and 3D content. Simply slip the device onto your head to experience the movie theater-like virtual screen (equivalent to a 750-inch screen) expand before your eyes. The HMZ-T1 is equipped with the newly-developed 0.7-inch (diagonal 18.0mm) high definition OLED panel (1280 x 720), which has been realized through Sony’s unique expertise in both OLED display and semiconductor silicon drive technologies. The HMZ-T1 achieves HD picture quality that makes full use of the OLED display’s high contrast, color reproducibility and fast response. In addition, the device adopts the ‘Dual Panel 3D Method’ which consists of separate panels for the left and right eye in order to display independent HD picture quality to each eye, which realize 3D vision.

This sounds awesome. Maybe I will try to get a pair of these!

YES  I have been waiting so long for this! It even looks pretty cool, like the brim of a hat pulled down low

Here's the actual Sony link with suggested price:
Wearable HDTV | Personal 3D Viewer | HMZ-T1 | Sony USA

At $799.99 (suggested), it's still pretty darned expensive--not really worthwhile, IMO. 3D TVs are priced where 2D ones were just over a year ago, and they're 1080p, whereas this headset is 720p. And multiple people can watch a TV. You really have to be a serious 3D addict to buy something like this, since its only real advantage over a 3D TV is its portability. Can you really not bear to be without 3D for the duration of a vacation or something? And do you have a 3D video source that you can bring with you? Those are the questions this thing poses.

Sony is famous for bringing out ultra-high-priced display gadgets like this. A couple of years ago, they briefly sold an all-OLED 15" TV for $5000, or something close. Good for that Rolex factor if you want to impress your friends, I guess--if they even know what they're looking at, which they probably don't! :D

... at what distance?

Also, not the first headworn 3D video glasses, and surely not the last either. OLED is promising though. I wouldn't mind giving those a go. I'd be curious about eye strain with so near focus, though I'm assuming they have some plan/solution for that.

EDIT: Sniper-ed by Aaron's link: "Feel like you're sitting 12 feet away from a 150" screen" That's not too shabby. I do agree about the single-person viewing. Though that could be a benefit in some cases also ... Avatar 3D on an airplane for example? Though the specs do list power input at 120V - But that could be with a wall wart, allowing for battery options.

This is another interesting note in Sony's product description: "This product has been designed for use by persons 16 years of age and older." Hmm..

There are apparently problems with younger people viewing 3D displays. Also, since it wraps around your head, it's obviously problematic if your skull is too small.

It is not thoeoughly self contained, though. Youneed a devise that talks to your tv and your headset. Even at half the price it is beyond my reach. Besides, for my entertainment expenses, I'd rather invest in Niri Te's ultralight airplane!

This years Chanukah present WILL be a pair of those one for Ateyo, and one for me. Can you imagine Avatar on those with a full home theater sound system, being watched in a pair of recliners with overdriven subwoofers in the seats aimed at the fabric that you are sitting on the other side of??? OH-HO-HO YESSSS!!!!! The ONLY thing better would be being in the matrix, If I can't have it for real. I want it SOOO real that I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE!!

Seems expensive, but I like the idea :)

How about a pair of special glasses with holsters for iPods/iPhones right it front of the lenses, a cable to sync them, and an app to stream separate left/right video feeds from NetFlix. :) Lots of families already have two or more iPhones.

Too heavy, and an iPhone isn't detailed enough.

Ok, iPhone 4+. And put two more holsters on the back of the head for older "i" devices--to balance things out. :xD:

I would not mind the weight of the Sony headgear, as a matter of fact, it would put me in my "Militarily Enhanced Human mindset.
