Stubborn parents...

I am going to be changing my bed pretty soon and I told my parents that I wanted a hammock. As usual, they game me the "You're not getting one of those, don't be rediculous, it's bad for your back etc." speeches.

I really do want a hammock and I don't think it's a rediculous idea at all, one of the best night's sleep I ever had was in a hammock.

Any ideas how I go about convincing them of this idea?

I don't really know why your parents would deny you it... Maybe you could tell them what you have said "One of the best nights sleep I've ever had was in a hammock" I'm pretty sure you would be able to convince them, Wear your special hat!

Maybe because they'd be paying for it, hehe.

I have told them that I had one of the best night's sleep on a hammock, but they still refuse to budge. My mum more than my dad, my dad is generally more of a "sure, why not" kind of a guy but my mum's far more, well, to put it bluntly, boring. :D

Why don't you pay for it then? If they won't buy it for you, you will have to buy it yourself. I know, we all spend all our money on the day the Bluray/DVD/Tshirt thing was released, but hey, start saving! :D

Maybe you're right, I wish I had the money right now. Time to get a job I think... :(

Good luck. Maybe if you suggest buying one (or even paying part) and keeping your bed around until you're completely happy then they might consider it.

Perhaps I need a hammock too :D

Human No More 03-24-2010 03:20 PM

I want one, but I can't afford it, and can't get rid of my bed as it's part of the house I rent and I don't have space to keep them both in my room :(

Gunny 03-24-2010 04:10 PM

Well since you are not paying for it yourself I am sorry to say you are more than likely SOL.

Now if you were to buy it yourself, thats a different story. Just look from your parents view, they have to purchase a hammock, take the effort to get rid of the bed etc.

R-D-A 03-24-2010 04:11 PM

I can afford it but I'm having a prob. I can only buy one of the three. I want a hammock, a bicyle and the nVidia GTX 480. I can only afford one :S

Gunny 03-24-2010 04:13 PM

Id get the bike

I suggest that you start saving money so that you can buy your hammock especially if your parents don't want to buy it. Good luck on it :).

I started thinking about getting a hammock as well, but I really don't have any space left in my room to put it... and obviously I can't get rid of my current bed. I guess that I'll have to wait to move to a new house. :(

I think its a wonderful idea! I have a hammock chair with stand, that I curl up and have naps in, it never occurred to me to have one to sleep in!

LOL! Does anyone ever convince their parents of anything, I moved out years ago and still have to listen to them tell me what they think is best for me. :p

Good luck, I hope you do!

Convince them a hammock is actually good for the back.

Set-up and use

For non spreader-bar styles, the way in which they are hung is critical for comfort. Generally, a higher attachment point is preferred as well as sufficient length between points, though these two dimensions can be adjusted to compensate for a lack in one or the other. The optimal angle of the attaching lines to the post / wall / tree is usually about 30 degrees.

Though one can lie in a hammock lengthwise or across its width, most hammocks are best used with a diagonal position, as it provides the most room and support. Users with back and joint pains often report some relief from these problems when sleeping in a hammock in this manner.
