3d tv!

I recently went to Bestbuy in search of speakers and televisions, and while I was searching around, I stumbled upon one of their newest 3D model TVs. To my surprise, it actually looked 3D, just like you would see in the theater. The picture was RealD 3D technology, not the typical anaglyph 3D technology used years ago.

If you'd like to own a 55" 3D TV set, prepare to pay around $2,500.00 for JUST the TV. The accessories necessary in order to achieve a working 3D TV can cost you up to $400.00. See more about prices here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....&type=category

What are your thoughts on 3D television? Have you ever seen a 3D TV set? Do you think 3D television will replace 2D sometime in the future?

Human No More 03-24-2010 11:24 PM

I think it will... Eventually. Not so many people will go for it in the near future though due to the cost. Of course, eventually it will be standard, like HD is now.

Tudhalyas 03-24-2010 11:25 PM

I think that 3D TV sets will be out-of-budget for most families for quite some time. When prices will decrease, then they will be more common - and in the meantime the technologies will get more sophisticated as well.

Personally I'm extremely happy with my current TV and I'm not planning to replace it anytime soon ;)

Gunny 03-24-2010 11:25 PM

Same for me. I will not be getting one anytime soon but will wait it out and see if it is just a fad or something that will stick around.

Vauktu 03-24-2010 11:55 PM

Yeah, the 3D TV sets are currently a little too much for the "average" family, but prices will drop in due time as technology advances, and some day everyone will have a 3D TV. I myself have settled on a rather decent 2D TV and I couldn't be happier. :D

R-D-A 03-25-2010 07:51 PM

I'd like a 3d tv made by LG :DDD

Fosus 03-25-2010 08:06 PM

I might get 3D monitor for my PC or a 3D projector before 2011.. that's a long time :)

Stanley_9875 03-26-2010 05:53 PM

I think 3-D will replace 2-D... think about it it's history repeating itself...

records -> tapes -> CDs -> MP3s
Computers
TVs

With the records, tapes, CDs, MP3s, its basically the steps of technology increasing, step by step. With computers and TVs, lots of people were skepticle about them... here are two quotes about each...

"There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home" I could see where they were coming from back then, the technology wasn't as facinating as it is now, and they were expensive and large, but now nearly every household in the US (and across the oceans) has one, and those who don't I don't know how they are getting by without one

"Television won't be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired at staring at a plywood box every night"

I think 3-D TVs are on the rise... and if I had the money I'd own one

Exactly the same with me... This is also what everyone used to say about HD, which is now standard. In a few years, most people will have or be able to afford one.

Yup you hit it on the nail... another example is VHS to DVD and now Blue-Ray

Ateyo 03-28-2010 12:11 PM

will be so expensive at the beginning , and you can wear the hearing... but anyway I want it, it worths

Yup, I think it will go similar to audio, which has already been 3D for a long time.

One speaker (Mono) => 2 speakers (Stereo) => 5.1 => 7.1 => 9.1 => ...
2D "Mono" => 3D "Stereo" => 3D => ?

By "Stereo 3D" I mean the old 1980s 3D, and by 3D, the new 3D technology used in Avatar where you can actually see the object from two angles.

Though, I think 3D movies will not get stuck in the "Stereo" like audio, as you don't need more TVs to view all the angles :P

Stanley_9875 03-28-2010 07:02 PM

^^ exactly great point

Grif 03-28-2010 07:34 PM

I've got a 3D tv already, I have had it since 2007. Still haven't bought the glasses though...

Gunny 03-29-2010 05:13 PM

Yeah, I just cant decide if 3D will stick around or if it will keep going onto something past 3D, it just seems a bit strange for regular viewing for things to be popping out of the TV LOL! Of course I would assume this is how people feel with any new tech that comes out. Though if it does catch on I do hope that they are able to configure them somehow that allow you to get all the effects of 3D without wearing glasses. That would make the sales boom IMO.

Went to my local BestBuy store to check out some of their digital projectors and found they still had their 3D TV set up. The thing that really surprised me was it was playing Avatar ... in 3D.

It was the real deal - I was watching Avatar in 3D. The image was as clear and sharp as you could expect from watching it in 2D on Blu-ray. The 3D really stood out and was more apparent than it was at the theater (this was probably due to the brightness of the TV).

From what I understand, as long as you have a 3D compatible TV, all you need are shutter glasses, a 3D Blu-ray player, and any Blu-ray disk, then you're set to go.

I guess I know what I'm buying next once I get the money. :D

Buoyant Rock 04-26-2010 04:47 AM

I'm not in any hurry to look into 3D TVs at the moment. I will when they stop making movies 3D using the "conversion method" (even though it seemingly has no correlation to its affect on 3D TVs). Start making legit 3D in theaters, that will make me want to look into this =).

Stanley_9875 04-26-2010 05:26 AM

I too went to Best Buy Saturday and saw they had a 3-D TV playing, and I was like, "let's see how it looks" so I powered up the glasses, put them on, and didn't want to take them off... it was astounding! It really was 3-D! Crystal clear!

Gunny 04-26-2010 06:01 AM

How was it compared to theater 3-D stanley? Would you say better, worse, or same? I think with the right setup the 2D is better in home which interests me about the 3D :D

Wow, I'm surprised they actually were able to retrieve the 3d film from Fox :O

Anyway, I've been thinking about getting a 3dtv, but they're expensive as hell (double price here in Sweden on everything, too. Not joking.), and I'm afraid they might become.. well, outdated, very quickly - if the standards change.

The disk was 2D. I asked. The TV and Blu-ray player converted it to 3D.

No kidding.

So wait, the movie itself doesn't need to be in 3-D? if I pick some random Blue-Ray movie and stick it in the 3-D Blue-Ray player on the 3-D TV it will turn it into 3-D?

And Gunny, I don't know... I didn't really think about the theater (why I didn't is beyond me) i'll have to see it again to answer honestly

No, the disk itself doesn't need to be 3D. You can pick up any 2D Blu-ray disk, stick it in a 3D Blu-ray player and watch it in 3D on a 3D TV.

That's awesome :P
Won't be like the cinemas 3d I suppose, since I'm guessing it's just a frame delay on one eye.. but I'm guessing it's cooler than normal 2d :D

The only difference I noticed between 3D TV and cinema 3D is the brightness of the picture which in turn made the 3D more noticeable. The quality of the picture, the sharpness, and the colors are all the same, it's just in 3D.

Human No More 04-27-2010 07:34 PM

Nice, I still haven't seen a 3D TV... I doubt I will in the foreseeable future either :(

Okay, holy crap that is amazing! I would've bought one even if it was for 3-D movies, but now I MUST have one!!!

2D picture cannot be turned into 3D. It's nowhere near the same. A real 3D is when you can literally see the object from two angles. Those 3D TV's are only manipulating the 2D image so that it looks like things are closer, but that's no more that what was done in 80's. Avatar was filmed with a camera system that works like human eyes.. and it should look a lot better than just simple depth manipulation. But if you really didn't notice much difference, that's good to hear! :)
