Avatar Box Office

From Box Office Mojo:
Domestic: $725,419,000 27.8%
+ Foreign: $1,881,165,406 72.2%
= Worldwide: $2,606,584,406

Foreign earnings should update on Monday, and I expect it to be somewhere around $1.9b. Getting closer and closer to $3b every passing day.

SaphirJD 03-14-2010 07:06 PM

Its really awesome to see that amount of money Avatar has earned so far... Lets hope for good Sequels now :)

Jacob 03-16-2010 06:10 AM

If Avatar stays in theatres for another couple of months I think it will almost certainly reach $3B. However, I'm not sure that's a given (especially with Alice in Wonderland taking up a lot of lucrative 3D screens). Avatar's already been in theatres for quite a while, relatively, and is not showing anywhere near as much as it used to.

Still, over $2.5B! That is simply amazing. :D

Chris 03-16-2010 05:24 PM

Hahaha i remember writing a blog reviewing Avatar at the time it came out - and there was a huge debate going on if it would ever be able to earn back its mega sized budget... it makes me chuckle thinking about it everytime i see these numbers

Stanley_9875 03-17-2010 08:21 AM

Jeez, so incredible. I remember first seeing Avatar opening night, and thinking "This movie is going to get popular so quickly" and what do you know, after a couple nights, sold out everywhere

guyguy 03-17-2010 09:26 AM

ill probly be able to go see it 3d this weekend so you can add 10$ to that!

Thats true...No one thought 3D would look so awesome as it did in Avatar...the movie opened with 77 million...Now that everyone loves immersive 3D...Alice comes out and does 115m the 1st weekend...but guess what Alice's 2nd weekend is only 62m compared to Avatar's 2nd weekend of 75.6m an all time 2nd weekend record!

Sovereign 03-17-2010 05:37 PM

The money's coming in from overseas. So Avatar's fate lies in whether the foreign theaters jump all over "Alice" too.

Lol, I haven't heard a single word from "Alice" since like ever. Heck not even the commercials! Most people say it was a "Meh" movie. I haven't seen it but don't feel like it either. Still, I'm dying to see Avatar in IMAX again.

Sovereign 03-18-2010 03:05 PM

Well if IMAX needs a quick fix, you know who they'll call.

Sacred Tsahaylu 03-18-2010 06:23 PM

Me? I have a great movie on standby :P

What actually adds up to the box office? Never really knew what it was..
Will it also add up the money of the bluray dvds bought and/or at least when it comes back to the theaters later this year?

Ticket sales. That's all. Give $10.00 to your theater and it is added to Avatar's box office. DVD/Bluray and other accessories are not added.

Vauktu 03-19-2010 02:36 AM

According to Box Office Mojo, Avatar is making $354 per theater each day, which means it would be making roughly $1,063,062 throughout Mon-Wed if it were playing in 3003 theaters, placing it as the #2 highest grossing movie this week (behind AiW) with a total domestic gross of $13,101,304 for the entire week.

The fact that Avatar is in only 1718 theaters and would still be making over $1m throughout Mon-Wed (which is more than any of the current releases besides AiW) if it played in 3k theaters is a sign it's being pulled far too early in it's run. What a shame.

~ViperSB1~ 03-19-2010 05:14 AM

I wonder if the re-release will only be in Imax?

If there were to be a re-release, it will definitely play in most IMAX theaters. Other theaters which show different formats are a completely different case. Whether those theaters go along with a re-release or not really depends on what is playing at the time.

spicyapple 03-20-2010 08:40 PM

It looks like Avatar is in tenth place this weekend with estimated $3M haul. It shed about 500 theatres too. :(

Chris 03-20-2010 09:30 PM

Damn, i was so sure it would cross 750, but im not so sure anymore

It's definitely possible with re-releases (later this year, and one before the sequel release). Foreign box office is really what's going to bring Avatar across the $3b mark.

zongtseng 03-21-2010 04:06 AM

Well, I just got back from a sold-out 500 seat IMAX theater. The late show starting after mine was also sold out. So, that's $14,000 from those two shows :)

Helicoradian 03-21-2010 07:42 AM

Real-D weekend showings are still selling out here, or at least it was this Saturday:)

Fkeu'itan 03-21-2010 11:50 AM

So, if my poor maths skills are correct, hitting $3bn will mean it will have have made a 1000% markup?

You are correct. In order for Avatar to hit the $3b mark, it would have to continue to gross $6m each week world-wide for 13 months. However, as stated by one of my previous posts on this topic, Avatar is being pulled from theaters far too early in it's release. There is still a large demand for the movie, it just doesn't have the theater count. One or two re-releases have the ability to push it past $3b.

JakeFanGirl 03-29-2010 02:59 PM

After 101 days, "Avatar" has finally exited the top 10.

With "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Alice in Wonderland" taking nearly all of the 3-D screens in the country, "Avatar" saw its ticket sales drop 50% this weekend to an estimated $2 million, pushing it to No. 11 on the box-office charts.

That's the biggest decline by far for director James Cameron's 3-D blockbuster since it opened Dec. 18 and a sign of just how important 3-D, which has generated more than 80% of the film's box-office revenue, has been to its $740.4-million domestic run.

"Avatar's" 14 consecutive weekends in the box office top 10 marks the longest such run for a movie since "Chicago" went for 16 straight weekends in 2003, according to boxofficemojo.com.

Overseas, meanwhile, "Avatar" will likely end up just short of $2 billion, as an additional $7.6 million this weekend brought its international total to $1.95 billion.

Noes :(

well, hopefully we still reach 3billion. Just got back from the BFI IMAX, 100% sold out. Only two showings today, but I'm sure they will keep playing it for quite a while... The fact that it's still showing 2-3x/day even with Alice in wonderland shows that Avatar is still more popular :D

ZitaX 04-14-2010 08:07 AM

Cool! Avatar is still making some decent money! Pretty amasing money actually if you see to how long its been in the theaters! :)

iluvneytiri 04-14-2010 08:57 PM

Avatar now stands at $2,708,853,911 worldwide earnings. I would like it to hit 2.742 billion, that's 900 million more than Titanic. Of course, if it's re-released in Imax with added footage, it may hit $ 3 billion.

With Avatar's re-release in roughly 57 iMAX theaters across the US over the weekend, Avatar's earnings shot up 50.3% from last weekend, and it is continuing to make more money as the week rolls along. On Monday and Tuesday alone (Mar 19-20) Avatar has had a 37.4% increase from last week thanks to the added number of theaters it received - which proves my earlier post. Avatar is still in high demand, it just doesn't have the theaters screens.

Avatar has a better chance of reaching $3b now that theaters are taking Avatar back in as other movies begin to fall out (Shutter Island, Alice in Wonderland, etc), and an even better chance of hitting $3b considering James Cameron has plans on re-releasing Avatar sometime in August:
James Cameron: The 'Avatar' sequel will dive into the oceans of Pandora | Hero Complex | Los Angeles Times
Quote:

JC: We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film -- which includes a lot of Weta work -- for a theatrical re-release in August.
[...]
Clearly, it wasn’t market forces directly; it was the availability of theaters. So we’re going to wait until there’s a time to come back in, inject the new footage into the mix and see if we can interest people in the “Avatar” experience in theaters.

Will people still go to the movies to see Avatar now that the DVD has been released? Of course, if Avatar comes back in Imax with 6 added minutes, people are gonna go for sure, but what about going to watch the present version, when the DVD is already available?

That's hard to say. There are so many factors that need to be calculated to determine the outcome. What I can say for sure is Avatar will have a huge first week after it's re-release. The second, third, or any week following is up in the air.

There's a large number people willing to pay more for the premium 3D experience as opposed to basic 2D. The same can go for Home vs Theater, but this applies to a smaller number of people. Some are willing to spend the extra $10 dollars to go watch it at the theater while others aren't. Some have efficient home theaters while others don't.

Whatever happens, it will be good. Fox is going through the trouble of adding an extra six minutes of footage and I am sure the work they go through is well worth it. After all, Fox didn't just flip a coin and decide whether they were going to go through with the re-release or not.

zongtseng 04-22-2010 08:49 AM

As long as they have Avatar in an IMAX theater near me, I am good for once a week for an indefinite period of time, regardless of having the blu-ray. There is no substitute for the IMAX 3D Experience :D

Vauktu 08-26-2010 01:35 AM

*bump*

On Box Office Mojo's "Box Office Derby", 204+ people have estimated Avatar : SE to gross somewhere around $8.7m in domestic ticket sales over the coming weekend.

Considering the amount of theaters showing Avatar, that's not bad at all. :) And judging by the polls on BOM, it may even surpass everyone's estimation.

TheIknimaya 08-26-2010 01:43 AM

Going by the worldwide gross on Box Office Mojo for Avatar, which is:

- $2,740,405,721, which means...

Avatar is only $259,594,279 away from passing the $3 Billion mark.

Quite the accomplishment. We all knew it would happen eventually if the re-release was to happen. ;)
