I too shall soon purchase a ticket. :D

Helicoradian 08-26-2010 04:47 AM

I'll do my part this friday :)

I wonder if the re-release will push it past the 3 billion mark?

Avatar is only $259,594,279 away from passing the $3 Billion mark.

Quite the accomplishment. We all knew it would happen eventually if the re-release was to happen. ;)

I'd say it will exceed $3 Billion by a fair amount. ;)

Vauktu 08-26-2010 07:18 AM

Let's do some math here...

Avatar will be re-released in more than 31 different territories.

If Avatar were to gross $1.5 million in every country on it's opening weekend, that would be $46 million total. If it were to gross $800 thousand in every country on it's second weekend, that would be $24.8 million.

If Avatar were to gross a minimum of $300 thousand in all territories during weekdays for two weeks (10 days), that would be $93 million.

Considering these numbers, I'd say Avatar has a fair chance of reaching $3 billion, but it really depends on just how long it lasts in theaters.

PaTRioT 08-26-2010 07:34 AM

Well, I'll be going to Melbourne Imax at least once a fortnight until they stop playing it. I've got tickets for a friend and I already booked for this saturday's afternoon session. can't wait. would love for us to get $3b.

Palulukan_Taronyu 08-26-2010 08:03 AM

175 Theaters. I think it will be able to hit 3-Billion.

Experts say about 8.2 mil for opening weekend.

Human No More 08-26-2010 09:58 PM

I hope so :D

X.,.Pandora.,.X 08-26-2010 10:00 PM

only 8.2 for opening weekend, it made what 20ish opening weeked when it first came out right?

TheIknimaya 08-26-2010 10:37 PM

I 100% guarantee that it will exceed $3 Billion.

100% guaranteed. ;):)

Only 8.2? That is more than most movies make on their opening weekend.

The re-release is only being shown at roughly 1,400 3D screens, whereas the initial release had 2,038 with an additional 5,000 2D screens. Not to mention it was more "fresh" and new, whereas the re-release mostly appeals to fans, not the every-day movie-goer.

On Avatar's initial release, it grossed $77 million on the weekend, but this came from approximately 7,000 screens at 3,452 theaters. 2,038 of those theaters being 3D, which is where 58% of it's gross came from.

Avatar SE made 1.23m in the US on Friday, coming in at 11th.

That's just an estimate from Box Office Mojo. Though, usually with BOM, their estimations are very accurate.

ISV Venture Star 08-28-2010 10:30 PM

I blame the anti-Avatar backlash.

Human No More 08-28-2010 10:39 PM

I doubt it... saw it on friday, latest showing of the day, to a 99% full cinema :)

ISV Venture Star 08-28-2010 10:41 PM

Saw it on Thursday at 8:55pm and the seats were about 25% full.:S

It may be due to the fact Avatar has been in theaters for close to nine months and a majority of people have lost all interest. I remember looking at Avatar's Facebook and people saying they were tired of hearing about the film, though there were still plenty of others who couldn't wait to see the re-release.

Who knows... the re-release may pull the same thing Avatar pulled on it's initial release. People may find more interest in it once word goes around about the new footage.

Tymian 08-30-2010 09:50 PM

Actual Avatar SE Theatrical performance

Domestic Total as of Aug. 29, 2010: $4,007,750
Domestic Lifetime Gross: $753,773,889
Worldwide Gross: $2,744,413,471

Moar We need Moar :P

Vauktu 08-30-2010 10:09 PM

Over the weekend, Avatar grossed $4,007,750 domestically and an estimated $7,260,418 internationally. That's not bad, but with numbers like these, I find it hard to imagine Avatar hitting $3 billion. Even $2.850 billion seems like a long shot.

Hopefully the re-release will gather more interest over the coming week. I know I'll be contributing another $11 something this week. :P

ZitaX 08-30-2010 11:10 PM

I don't think they can expect to much - After all, it hasn't been long at all since they showed it in cinema.

But hey, doesn't really matter to much! After all, it's the highest grossing movie of all time! :P

Helicoradian 08-31-2010 07:35 AM

Well it's a bad time to release anything right now with people getting ready to go back to school. Not to mention you really never heard too much about the re-release in the media.

I really hope it picks up :(

Vauktu 09-02-2010 09:30 PM

Avatar has been doing pretty decent this week considering the circumstances. It has had very low day-to-day drops compared to the other movies currently playing.

Monday: $419,611 w/ 65.6% drop.
Tuesday: $418,974 w/ 0.2% drop.
Wednesday: $349,947 w/ 16.5% drop.

I wouldn't be surprised if it made a little around $3 million this coming weekend. It seems that repeat viewings are keeping these numbers alive.

TxonTirea 09-02-2010 10:28 PM

I better go see it again. *summons money tree*

Human No More 09-03-2010 09:33 AM

I'm seeing it again tomorrow :D

Looks like I better go see it this weekend before they take it out of the theatres again!

Most media outlets had Avatar passing $2 billion overseas last weekend, which was its first with the Special Edition release. In actuality, they made the mistake of double-counting Puerto Rico's $5.9 million, which was already counted in the movie's domestic total (per the industry norm). In reality, Avatar hit the $2 billion foreign mark on Friday. Through Sunday, Avatar has collected just under $2.003 billion overseas for a worldwide total of $2.761 billion.
Domestic Total as of Sep. 8, 2010: $8,860,738
Domestic Lifetime Gross: $758,626,877

International:

Country Gross
France $459,546
Hong Kong $267,734
Malaysia $222,367
Philippines $79,847
Poland $399,775
Singapore $112,330
South Africa (Entire Region) $44,325
Taiwan $125,337

Just got back from the last IMAX showing, 10/10 experience :)

Patrice Maire 09-10-2010 07:27 AM

I've seen it twice already. I'm tapped out for money right now. I'll save my coins for the dvd to come out.
The two times I went, neither were crowds that big. The opening night the theater was quite full but the second time not so much.
Guess the area I saw it in wasn't a big draw for it. Oh well.
We all know how awesome it is, no need for the numbers to reinforce that. Besides.. all the money going into the coffers now just adds fuel for the sequels to do even better!
whooo!

Human No More 09-10-2010 09:05 AM

It's out of my cinema now :'(
Saw it for the last time there last night.

The crowds were never really all that big at my theater even on release night. But on the plus side, it makes getting the perfect seat very easy (dead center 1/3rd of the way back) not to mention having room to stretch out :)

Just gotta wait for the dvd/blu-ray now...

Human No More 09-10-2010 10:03 AM

Mine was about half full first time I saw it there (couple of days after it was released, went up to London for IMAX on the release day), last night which was the last showing there were probably still 13 or 14 other people in there... :(

That's about the same number of people who showed up tonight at IMAX :( It's a little depressing that more people weren't there to see it, but I have a feeling those who showed up were big fans :) so that's ok.

Human No More 09-10-2010 04:31 PM

So far, every IMAX showing I've seen (1x original early on, 1x original right near the end and 1x SE on release day) was just about completely full...
