Cameron talks about how he wants everyone to adopt “5-D,” a term coined by the film and television industry to describe shooting in 2-D and 3-D simultaneously.

Quote:

Broadcast 3-D is often seen as the bastard stepchild of the TV world. It’s been too expensive, and 3-D operators have mostly been unable to score prime camera positions (like, for instance, right under the hoop at a basketball game). The Avatar director’s company, the Cameron Pace Group, hopes to change things with a new line of cameras that broadcast both 2-D and 3-D signals and can be operated by a single person.

I was about to facepalm very hard at "5-D", but thankfully that phrase actually makes sense with that explanation :)

It's a sound concept. And the gear, technology and techniques CPG have developed is amazing.

At the CPG booth at the National Association of Broadcasters trade show last month (where that interview was shot) they had 2 CPG 3D production/support trucks and a myriad of 5D camera rigs and tools out on display. The older of the trucks was full of all sorts of really cool "hacks" to achieve 3D "shadow" production using traditional existing TV gear. And the newer truck was all built on new original technology that CPG had built themselves from the ground up to enable and streamline 3D production. It's all really good stuff, and impressive how fast they are developing.

Combined with some really good looking auto-stereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D TV's on display at the NAB show; 3DTV will be very quietly slipping into the norm in the pretty near future. As Jim says; it'll just be ubiquitous and we won't even notice it except for the added richness it brings to content presentation.

Exactly.

This is the perfect solution.
