The Swedish Manga trial

A translator of Japanese Manga has been accused of hosting child pornography since the authorities have found some images of "human like" figures with bodies that are "prepubertal", ie are small and where the females have no accentuated breasts. He has already been sentenced in two instances of court but he has appealed to the highest court.

Many people in the art world and among the culturally interested find the trial preposterous and a threat to the freedom of art.

Here is an article about the case:

Quote:

Sweden’s most famous manga translator Simon Lundström was convicted of possession of child pornography in July 2010. The local court in Uppsala found that 50 out of his three million images – drawn cartoons, that is, and 20 of them being duplicates from a backup drive – were to be considered child porn, since the definition of child porn in the Swedish law includes drawings.

What do you think, have the Swedish authorities completely lost it, or are really drawn images to be considered pornographic?

An interesting aspect that some of the involved in the Swedish debate mentioned is that only drawings of children (or children like creatures like small elfs, and perhaps small naked Navi) that can be interpreted in some sexual way is forbidden. Drawings of children that are being assaulted or even shot is not forbidden (as long as they are not nude or that the violence have some elemets of sex). So violence is OK, but not nakedness or any hints of eroticism.

Never underestimate the stupidity of humans, especially around politically potent subjects like child pornography.

None of this has anything to do with reason, it just happens that child pornography is the hot thing in politics right now, and it will be brought up whenever possible.

"Why won't anybody think of the children?"

meh

iron_jones 05-25-2012 03:22 PM

If it's not real children, why does anyone give a dick?

Human No More 05-25-2012 08:24 PM

WTF. This is unbelievably stupid and 1984-esque, especially if the reason is 'small breasts'...

Honestly this is like back in the day where pornographic photos of women were illegal, but painted pornographic images weren't.

It says the law considers drawings too, I can imagine they can also send me to jail for this:

So very subjective...:S

Moco Loco 05-28-2012 01:13 AM

This is in no way debate worthy :P

Edit: Why Applejuice, that girl isn't wearing a shirt!

applejuice 05-28-2012 01:32 AM

Precisely!

It seems that comic books are targets for iconclasts everywhere. Now the US Christian right wing group "One Million Moms" has targeted comic books that the group considers spreading gay propaganda:

Right wing nut jobs being sticks in the mud isn't even news worthy anymore, it's become one of those inevitabilities we've just come to accept and ignore.:P

I hate bigoted buttholes like that.

(Edited for content. Replace butt with a vulgar word and you've got the picture.)

True enough, but it goes for the extremist leftists too... Neither are relevant any more and desperately seeking attention. If the world is lucky, it's an 'extinction burst' of both as they try to seek any way to sustain themselves.

If it is it's probably temporary. As times change different political views develop, with varying levels of severity. There will always be moderatism and extremism, only the subject changes. It's the way it's always been, and forever will be. Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis - be it for the better or worse.

It seems that common sense finally won. The court has now ruled that the images hosted in the Manga translators computer are not child pornography.

Quote:

Japanese manga comics depicting children in sexual poses are not child pornography, Sweden's Supreme Court has ruled, overturning a high-profile conviction of a Swedish translator.

A victory for free speech and common sense. Now we just need to hope other countries follow this precedent :)

Moco Loco 06-20-2012 01:48 AM

Well damn, finally. Still can't believe something like this could go to court anywhere.

Exoblade 06-20-2012 08:24 AM

On a related note, in the UK under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, non-photographic pornagraphic images that give the "predominant impression" is of a person under the age of 18 are illegal. This means that manga like this case is illegal in the UK.

This is espectially complex since the age of consent in the UK is 16.
