Avatar Fan Film 3 - Who wants to take part?

Kaltxì ma eylan,

Ok, who is up for taking part in Avatar Fan Film 3?

With the coming AvatarMeet 2012 in Seattle only a few weeks away the opportunity to do another Avatar fan film is just too good to pass up. The theme of this fan film is:

'Now we will send them a message.'

The intent is to create a fan film that we can send to the creators of Avatar to give them some encouragement for the next film and show them our appreciation. An 'Irayo' if you will, for bringing Avatar to us. This will also act as a wonderful record of this time in all our lives to look back on. Ok, so what is the synopsis?

Synopsis:
We all have our own individual and collective 'Avatar stories' to tell. This fan film will be the opportunity to collect them together. It will cover the story from the beginning when we first discovered Avatar and what our experience was like. It will explore our collective and individual journeys since then, how it has changed us, perhaps caused us to think and do things differently, through to the friendships and communities we have formed as a result. The final aspect will be an opportunity for us to say 'Irayo' to James Cameron, his cast and crew; to send them a message.

Whilst the opportunity will be taken to capture a considerable amount of the content at AvatarMeet 2012, this really is open to anyone who wishes to take part from the forums really. Even if you are unable attend the meet up.

So who is interested in taking part? If you are, feel free to post a reply here. There is no need to go filming right away as I will post more information once we know that there is enough interest out there.

Over to you.

Eywa ngahu,

Alan

I'm in :)

I think the meetup is a great place to do it.

Moco Loco 06-09-2012 02:50 AM

I'm certainly open to it and think it's a great idea.

Drewan 06-09-2012 03:47 PM

And Yes---you can count on me....:)

Alan 06-10-2012 01:11 PM

Great! Irayo for your interest ma eylan. :D Hopefully we will get some more interest along the way to take part. I've been working on a loose 'script' in the background. Hopefully this should be a lot of fun for everyone. Feel free to pass the message around. :hi:

Me too!

James of terra 06-13-2012 08:51 AM

I am in!!!!

Alan 06-13-2012 07:55 PM

Helloooo James :hi: :hi:

Well, of course you two are in - I'll be chasing you with the camera! Hehehe.

Alan

Raiden 06-13-2012 10:41 PM

I'd be delighted to take part.

I want to say something about how Avatar reminded me of my passion for other living things, and how it reignited my sense of duty in protecting them from those who would eradicate them for their own gain.

I agree.
And I'm in too! :)

Hey Alan I think you know my reply already... if you need my non-UK, non-US, err... non-Native-English-speaker accent... any time ma oetsyp tsmukan! :D

I think it is a Very good idea, in terms of 'sending them a message' - but also as a way of 'Keeping the feeling alive' & reminding us why in the world we're actually here (e.g. on the forum, the Meetup...) & what Avatar was/is for us, and what this 'Avatar bond' means...

I'll See you (& your camera) - at the Meetup, hehe.

Rainbowhawk1993 06-26-2012 11:16 PM

I'll see about that. It might be fun.

Aaron 06-27-2012 12:32 AM

Hey there, Alan! A belated "I'm interested" from me. :) I need to pay closer attention! Looking forward to the details.

*runs off to buy an Arri Alexa* :xD:

Ahhh, ma tswal tsmuke. It doesn't matter what tongue you speak, Avatar speaks to all who become connected to it.

Irayo for the test footage you sent through:hi:

Cool....Wot you like! Arri Alexa indeed...Hehehe.

OK lets get started!

Irayo to everyone who have registered their interest in our fan film. With the help of Drewan I have pulled together a website that contains all the details we need to this film on the road.

There are five main pages:
  • Home Page - contains a drop box for you to upload your footage and a sneek preview of the start of the film (Irayo to tm20 for doing the voice over).
  • Script Guidance - This gives an overview of the script and a link for you to download the script for you to read through and get your thinking caps on what you would like to say.
  • Film Making Tips - covering shot types, camera info, sound, lighting and direction
  • Uploading Foootage Tips - How to name your clips, file formats and how to upload your footage.
  • Previous Fan Films - provides information about the previous two fan films that have been made.

There is now nothing to stop you filming away...unless you want to get involved with any of the specific scripted text. In which case contact me before filming these bits so I can update the script with who is doing what.

As I said at the start of this thread, although a fair amount of the filming will be undertaken on both the camping trip and in Seattle, this is open to anyone who would like to take part. So visit the website to find out more:

If you haven't already posted above that you would like to take part either leave a post or PM me. This is so I know who is taking part.

Irayo for taking the time to 'send them a message'. Have fun.

Eywa ngahu,

Alan

Human No More 06-27-2012 11:49 PM

Looks interesting. I'll give it a read and work out that I might do tomorrow :)

Fiyerwall 06-28-2012 01:30 AM

Ooo, there's a script now! Sweet!

Moco Loco 06-28-2012 02:40 PM

Cool stuff, hope I can look it over tonight :)

Aaron 06-30-2012 08:48 PM

Still looking over the script, though I'll certainly be happy to do the "Everyone" bits! :D Looks like quite a few "camp" shots--very appropriate, and I wish I was going to be there! :'(

Alan, what is the target frame rate for the film? 24?

Alan 07-01-2012 05:02 PM

Kaltxi Aaron :hi:

Well there will be quite a few to do in Seattle, in fact it would be great if you could help film them ;) Of course you can be in front of the camera too!

As for final frame rate...well, the footage I get from contributers could in all forms; NTSC, PAL, smart phone! But the target output will be the best format I can make it. It would be great to give it a filmic look at 24. My default editing is 1080P 25fps. Not sure if I gave you an answer there :P....:), but we'll have to do some trials in the editing.

Alan

You silly Europeans and your 25p..

You bet, Alan. In fact, if you're trying to travel light, I've got a decent set of sticks I can lend you when you get here (before camping). Just let me know. My camera won't do 25p, though. :(

Always tryin' to one-up us Yanks! :P Literally, in this case! :xD:

mikkowilson 07-02-2012 09:55 AM

Nah. European film is 24p like the US.

It's their TV that runs at 50i or 25p. In the US we run at 60i or 30p.
(Unless you're talking about 720p HD, then it's 50p and 60p, respectively.)

I'm just talking about the one extra frame/sec in the "filmic" video frame rate. Aren't films simply run ~4% faster for TV in PAL Land? That's probably getting OT--sorry! :)

If Fan Film 3 is targeting 24 or 25 fps, then people here in NTSC Land should definitely engage the 24 fps modes of their cameras if they can, since 30 and 60 fps just don't convert to 24/25 very nicely. Particularly where pans are involved, the awkward frame cadence will be very noticeable. I've done this, and have always cringed at the result! Static nature shots and face shots are probably ok at 30/60, though.

mikkowilson 07-02-2012 08:04 PM

^^ all correct.

- Mikko

Human No More 07-02-2012 09:25 PM

Everyone needs to move to 60 (or more)... ¬_¬

Aye, probably...wondered why they spoke in a 1 frame higher pitch....Adverts still take just as long though... Why can't they run those at 60? Hehehe.

Yeah, so it would be great if everyone could do 24...or 25 fps, it certainly be a way of getting some commonality and ease the editing and end result. Good thinking Aaron :hi:

Irayo for the offer of some sticks. I might just take you up on that. I'll be in touch.

Alan, I'll most likely have my Merlin with me also if you'd like to use it?

Hell yeah!!! Irayo ma tsmukan. It is ok for a 1.1Kg (2.4lb) camera? I'm presuming so.

Alan

Av_Daedric 07-03-2012 10:42 PM

You can drag me along for the ride as well!

Any specific deadline you need the footage by?

Also, is there any -preferred- file format you'd like? I saw the acceptable formats, but do you have a preference?

Alan 07-03-2012 11:15 PM

Yay! One of the original fan film crew :hi:

Well as soon after the meet up in Seattle really so it can be edited together after. You are coming to the meet up aren't you AV? ;). Hope to see you there tsmukan.

As for file format...hmmm...well if you are able to shoot in 24P that would be great. File format? Well the one that gives the least number of re-renders of your footage. I guess straight from you camera. I'm guessing that will be some form of .mp4 format?

It's good up to 5.5lb.

- Mikko

Moco Loco 07-04-2012 04:30 PM

I don't actually have any camera or anything, so I guess my line and any further involvement will have to be at the meetup.

Wow, going to need a bit of body building to keep a 5.5lb camera in the air. (My muscles are like knots in cotton! Hahaha) Should be fine with my diddy camera though. Irayo ma tsmukan.:hi:

No a problem ma tsmuke. I think there will be a few of us there with cameras!

Alan

Human No More 07-05-2012 10:40 PM

I'm going to be relying on photos from other people too... I'm sure there will be a lot though.

Moco Loco 07-06-2012 04:55 PM

400 pictures from Mikko at last year's meetup (which lasted three days), I wonder how many there will be this time :xD:

mikkowilson 07-06-2012 06:21 PM

9001.

I leave the professional talk to the professionals but it would be TXANTSAN to see a wee bit more of Alan in the video! I mean mostly the Meetup Video - but also in the Fan Video.

So Aaron, 'we need your help' :P

I'm sure we can all find a way to force Alan to stand on the other side of the camera for a while. If that becomes difficult, however, I'll just start rolling on the impromptu "Making of Fan Film 3" film. You know... the one that consists of nothing but Alan's face, scowling, muttering Na'vi obscenities, the camera viewfinder pressed painfully into his eye socket in a vain effort to counteract the strobe-like effect of Seattle's unpredictable sunlight as it plays its usual infuriating game of peek-a-boo. :xD:

Alan 07-07-2012 02:53 AM

Poo....I thought I had it licked not getting in shot by being the camera operator. :P Hehehe....

I guess no escape this time. Well at least it will prove I was there with my Avatar family!:D
