Four Toes?

I was watching Survivorman on netflix and came across something puzzling. While they were dropping Les off at the bank of a river in the Amazon, they had a camera in the boat that was being steered by a tribal folk who had 4 toes. This caught me off guard and I had to watch it a couple times but yeah, he has four toes (and it did not seem as if one toe was missing). I could not see his other foot though. Very cool or not, it just reminded me of Avatar.

Well, I guess the guy either had a deformity or lost the toe at a young age.

Perfectly plausible either way. There's a whole family of people who have (two?) toes on each foot who have been on a few documentaries etc. IIRC.

That's how they leave the Yakuza. Gotta cut them toes off.

It's called Oligodactyly when it shows up as a birth defect.

I'm pretty sure it's not genetic though.

Also, people who are born with it are rarely as lucky as the person in the above photo.

Personally, I think the 3-fingered deformity looks pretty cool.

Crab people... I knew they existed.

Wasnt there also some occasion where people get born with 6 fingers?
OTOH I can imagine some other explanation - tribal people after all are not alien to body modification at a young age.....:shock:

Human No More 07-07-2013 02:39 PM

Yep. A few known cases, with varying ones from ones that are just skin to ones that even have fingernails (but generally no muscle/bone).

Anne Boleyn was sometimes claimed to have had six fingers on one hand, but it's apparently disputed.

Inside the local supermarket (where I live nearest to) works a young lady which was obviously born with this "defect". Her right hand has only got 3 fingers. First time I saw her I was puzzled and had to think of the Na'vi, while she cashed the stuff I bought. Weird but somehow cool situation.

That's called hyperdactyly.

It's actually somewhat common in some strains of domesticated cats.
