Sequel release dates announced. Avatar 2, 3 and 4 to be filmed back-to-back

Looks like JC is going to make three sequels back-to-back and release them a year apart from December 2016 onwards.

Quote:

Fox notes that Avatar 2 will be released in December 2016, Avatar 3 will hit theaters in December 2017, and Avatar 4 will follow a year later. Yes indeed, a trio of Avatar films are heading our way beginning in just a few short years.
The fourth possibly being a prequel.

Also more screenwriters!

Quote:

Fox announced today that not only will Cameron now film three Avatar sequels simultaneously, but he has hired screenwriters Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages) to collaborate with him on the screenplays in order to “help bring his growing Avatar universe to life and to expedite the process.”

Three sequels starting in three years? I wonder :P

It's a lot of work ahead of Cameron. The time between the sequels is really short. I'm excited :)

I Hope JC will not make bad sequels like matrix, (1st matrix was the best of all three).
I can't imaging how he wanna continue the story.

I hope the sequels will be awesome XD

I foresee some marathon viewing sessions starting in 2019...

Whoa.

I guess the drought will end relatively soon.

moonbeam 08-03-2013 03:15 AM

Awesome. I can't wait.

I'm hoping they won't each be progressively worse like most movie franchises.

Ah, yes -- good idea, Sempu! :D
Well, looking forward to 2016...hopefully these 3 yrs will go by quickly and it'll all be well worth the wait.

I really have my doubts about this. Avatar is like JC's child and he's handing it over to a group of people with questionable backround history to write the screenplays. Even if JC keeps supervision over everything, he seems to be in a rush to get these movies rolling in 2016.

Hollywood has been releasing half-baked sequels, remakes and super hero movies with lazy screenplays because they know it'll make money on its name alone regardless of how bad of a film it is (see: Amazing Spiderman, Man of Steel, Grown Ups 2). If this is the case with the Avatar franchise, then we can expect enjoyable but flawed movies. I hope I'm wrong and that the sequels are as great as the first film.

I think JC is too much of a perfectionist to let crap get through. I think he knows what will happen anyway and is just using them to outline dialogue, etc.

^This, some are worried that the different writers may cloud the message and feel of the story, which I understand that thought, but I think it is just being used as a way to expedite the the process of getting JC's vision to the big screen :) :) :)

I will be seeing it every day here in New Orleans in IMAX 3D. Then I will probably drive to Houston or Atlanta because they are the next closest large cities with IMAX 3D. It will be like getting off the rollercoaster and getting right back in line.
