Avatar (2,3 & 4) will start filming... October 2014

So says Sam Worthington in an Australian radio interview:

“We are going to start this time next year and we will do two, three and four,” he told Australia radio station NovaFM. “In one shot, we’ll do them simultaneously. I’ll be grateful if it finishes.”

This according to Latino Review

Seems legit, here's another link

Can't wait!

Cheers!

:D

Uhmmm, why? And if so, doesn't this preclude the possibility of a 2016 release?

moonbeam 10-19-2013 06:47 PM

Why must they take so long? I am sad.

Raiden 10-19-2013 08:45 PM

Hmm.

Good thing I'm drought-resistant.

iron_jones 10-19-2013 09:14 PM

Goodness gracious.

They only have to have the first one done by 2016.

CyanRachel 10-23-2013 12:21 AM

Irayo, Jachyra, for posting this news.
I think Oct 2014 seems about right for filming to start.

I'm happy but... come on :( we have been waiting long enough.

Moco Loco 10-25-2013 02:47 PM

I too would like to know exactly what it has been about preproduction that has taken this long. I guess we will know in future years, but I wonder why, if JC always had the whole story arc planned, it's taken five years to start shooting the next one. Was he waiting for even more new tech to be developed? :P

I know that underwater motion capture technology had to be invented for Avatar 2 at least (not sure if 3 & 4 will have a lot of underwater scenes). So that's one of the reason for the long delay. That and the fact they built a brand new studio for the next Avatar movies (self sufficient as far as electricity go, with a lot of solar panels on the roof).

Also JC mentioned not long after the first Avatar run that he had the story arc for 2 & 3 pretty much mapped out. Incidentally, all 3 scripts (2,3 & 4) were pretty much finished when JC hired the writers not too long ago. They're just being brought in for polishing purposes, this according to Sam Worthington (can't find the link, sorry).

Cheers!

:)

Moco Loco 10-28-2013 09:05 AM

That sounds fine I guess, just wondering since the writing is primarily what I hear about and I'm sure that should actually be one of the smaller issues since JC presumably knows what he wants, and they don't need a ridiculous budget and complicated equipment and workflows for writing.

X.,.Pandora.,.X 10-28-2013 04:14 PM

It must have been technology, if writing was primarily done, I'm 99.99999% sure getting the funds wouldn't have been an issue.

It's Cameron. I don't think he'll have a problem getting funds ever again unless Avatar 2 bombs spectacularly.

Well, some of Avatar was also filmed in New Zealand (some Sec Ops scenes IIRC). Don't forget that Weta Digital is also there.

Following the news of the Avatar trilogy being filmed entirely in New Zealand, here are a few quotes from Cameron himself on the next 3 Avatar movies:

On what we'll be seeing of Pandora in the sequel and whether or not it will be "off-world":

"It's going to be a lot of new imagery and a lot of new environments and creatures across Pandora. We're blowing it out all over the place. At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary. I mean the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasy land that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it."

On the planned underwater sequences of the sequels:

"There's a fair bit of underwater stuff. It's been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That's not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films."

On THE GODFATHER famiy aspect of the sequels:

"It was very Jake-centric. His story seen through his eyes," Cameron said. "We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It's really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like 'The Godfather.'"

Here's the link to the quotes.

Edit: The press conference where it was announced (Cameron starts speaking at the 2 minute mark)

Cheers!

:)

Moco Loco 12-17-2013 08:36 AM

That actually makes a lot of sense. I was wondering what the same few characters would be doing in the sequels, and I feel like the first movie wrapped up way too well for the sequels to just be about them, so this sounds great.

CyanRachel 12-18-2013 04:40 PM

Irayo, Jachyra, for posting this news about the sequels!
Glad to hear they will be filmed in NZ (aka Middle-earth).
Can't wait to return to Pandora! :) :awesome:

moonbeam 12-18-2013 08:16 PM
