Jet fuel from seawater?
Well, this is an interesting report.
Fueling the Fleet, Navy Looks to the Seas - U.S. Naval Research Laboratory US Navy reveals radical new 'game changing' process to power jets and boats from seawater | Mail Online Generally, I take phrases like "game changing" with a fair deal of skepticism. While the science may be sound, I find the Navy's goal of extracting fuel at $3-6 per gallon to be a tad too ambitious. Also, I'm not sure if the concentration of CO2 in the ocean is high enough to make this economically feasible. Of course, since our carriers and submarines are nuclear powered, this might just be a plausible source of energy, especially with the new CVN-78s coming online over the next decades. As with many other sources of "green energy," call me cautiously optimistic. |
