Walas00 05-26-2010 05:52 PM

Bumpy and I hope sticky, a lot of updates here, and no one even notices that !

Sacred Tsahaylu 05-26-2010 06:19 PM

Editing posts doesn't show up as new. That's probably why

josie20 05-27-2010 11:51 AM

Wow, this is great. A-lot of new words here. :)

KalaKuival 05-27-2010 12:49 PM

Hmm... Should I always make some post here to show that i have updated the list?

Sacred Tsahaylu 05-27-2010 02:21 PM

Yeah, you could do

Human No More 05-27-2010 07:56 PM

Good idea :)

KalaKuival 05-31-2010 08:54 PM

Small update: pänu - promise, n :P

Walas00 06-01-2010 06:27 PM

Any knowledge about a word for "birthday" ?

Taw Makto 06-01-2010 06:39 PM

There needs to be a word for "eight," since the Na'vi have eight fingers, not seven.

:D

Walas00 06-01-2010 06:57 PM

hmm KalaKuival, any rules when creating new words? Like "connecting many words to create one word"

My idea for "birthday": trrtireapahemnekifkey
day-spirit-arrive-to-world

What do you think?

wwwoa....... :P

But i don't think that's possible. I mean, we yet don't have any words that consist from over 2 words. I haven't heard from any rules saying whether this is allowed or not, but i bet we just need to wait for Frommer to give us some info over that matter.

Also, the trrtireapahemnekifkey has 2 nouns and a verb in it with an adoption, it seems to be more like a sentence srak?:P

Walas00 06-02-2010 12:20 PM

Srane, since a word should at least give a clue what do you want to say...
tireapahemtrr - I guess that's the shortest version possible, since we need "day, spirit, arrive"

KalaKuival 06-02-2010 01:37 PM

Yea, i suppose we indeed could use this word as we don't have anything better yet. :)

KalaKuival 06-02-2010 03:33 PM

:D

Ooh...sorry...

Eight is "vol" as the na'vi have the octal system (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11...)
so actually our 8 is their 10 ...

Sacred Tsahaylu 06-07-2010 09:31 PM

And still no word for queue...

EywaBlessMe 06-08-2010 10:30 PM

Now we need the word 'to fail'

I just had a chance to glance through the Survival Guide and thought it was mentioned in there. It's a multi phrase description and I saw the word Eywa in the middle. I didn't have the money to buy it right now so I had to scan through it and put it back on the shelf :'(
Now I know there are others out there that have that book, so if you could see if I'm remembering correctly please?

KalaKuival 06-13-2010 11:31 AM

I think there indeed was somekinda sentence for that word...:D;)

Unfortionatly I don't have the book here with me, but whatever it is, it is not Frommerian and I'm pretty positive that it contains illegal words. Frommer was not consulted about the names of the things and tools we see there (exept for flora and fauna + the list of words in the end).

Ayoe kivin maweypey taweyk poanìl set ke fìtxan krrìt ke latsu.

AHHHHHHHH!!! YAAAAAAAAYYY! NEW WORDS!!!!

KalaKuival 06-19-2010 12:22 PM

Well, today really is one epic day:P Right on my birthday we get loads of new words and info!

kew - zero / 0 (and the name of the number symbol)
’eyt - the name of the number symbol “8” (the value is irrelevant)
nayn - the name of the number symbol “9” (the value is irrelevant)
To be used for example in telephone numbers...

Then the trrtxon ...

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3586/trrtxon.png
-taken from learnnavi.org

note that these periods are not fixed with time, instead they are used to describe the current phase of the 24 hour cycle
Quote:

In the winter in Canada, kaym is likely well over by 5:00 PM. In Spain in summer kaym may not end until 10:00 PM.
also these words:

rewonam - 'yesterday morning', n (stress on final syllable)
rewonay - 'tomorrow morning', n (stress on final syllable)
fìrewon - 'this morning', n

Now a new topic of describing things:

eltur tìtxen si - to be interesting / intriguing, phrs
Tsa’u eltur tìtxen si. (“That’s interesting.”)
Tsavur oeyä eltur tìtxen soli. (“That story intrigued me.”)
Tsavur feyä ayeltur tìtxen soli. (“They found that story interesting.”)
Pxoeri tsavur eltur tìtxen soli. (“The three of us were interested in that story.”)

w•o•u - “to be amazing/fascinating” stative v.(slang)
- If you’re a typical teenage boy:
WOU Neytiri! (“Neytiri is the bomb/awesome!”)
- If you’re a linguist:
Oeru woeiu lì’fya leNa’vi. (“I’m just fascinated by the Na’vi language.”)
How it became to be:
Quote:

When Jake was new to the Na’vi, he was also new to the Pandoran forest. He couldn’t speak Na'vi and was constantly walking around being continually amazed by Pandora. He said "Whoa!" a lot. While the Na'vi (especially the young people who where hanging on his every word and action) couldn’t know exactly what “Whoa!” was grammatically in English, it was very clear to them that he was “impressed/amazed”. They started using “whoa!” (pronounced in Na’vi as «wo.u» ) more or less as a stative verb. By the time Jake became Toruk Makto, the evolution of “whoa!” to «w•o•u» was etched in the stone of Na’vi youth culture. People much older than Neytiri and Jake may hear the younger folk using it, but they don’t know exactly what it means. Compare ’Rrtan grandparents understadning how a cellphone app can be “sick”. They basically don’t. At all. Enjoy.
alo - time / turn / instance, n
fralo - each time, every time, n

Alo amrr poan polawm, slä fralo poe poltxe san kehe.*
"He asked five times, but each time she said, 'no.'"
*If the quoted speech ends the utterance, the final sìk is optional.

maweypeyyu - the one who is patient, n
nìmwey - calmly, peacefully, adj
(Hivahaw nìmwey)

and finally some epicness:

ku’up - heavy (physical weight), adj
syo - light, lightweight, adj
hay - next, adj
ham - last, previous, adj

lìng - float in the air, hover, vin
- ayRam aLusìng - the Floating Mountains

This didn't make any sense to me given the definitions. Also, why would a Na'vi need a word for Paris?

Just a Skyperson not understanding the language I suppose.

ay-Ram a-L<us>ìng... the mountains that hover, where the banshees were:P

and as for Paris...
Well, if we convert human names to na'vi ones, then why not doing it so with cities also? This form could have been used before also, but it's just that Frommer made it official by using it :)
