lucky how you all have dreams about Pandora and the Na'vi. i've only ever had 1 dream, it wasn't even on Pandora or atleast i don't think it was) but it had Jake and Neytiri in it.
|
Lately after thinking seriously about my life, the Avatar movie, the Neytiri (thanks to the great article Neytiri_Quest) I started to have those dreams. But not like you ma frapo :) I wasn't dreaming about Pandora, about the Na'vi, or about me being Na'vi physically.
As I mentioned earlier, I usually dream future, that's why there is very small possibility of me meeting Na'vi in my dreams :P But recently I started to dream of me doing what the Na'vi do, but in the human body and on our planet. It was a real calling for me. I started to do the same in the conscious world. And I'm so much happier than ever before :) |

Well, apache_blance, what if you are a Na'vi - minus the blue skin, queue, and 10' height but with the other important bits - and you and we here like you are the next stage in human evolution? You'd be part of the vanguard group that creates a brighter future. I'm sure life was hard for the first Cro-Magnons to arrive on the scene with all those Neanderthals around, too :)

Lines like that can't really be drawn while a species is still evolving or diverging. There isn't a single generation when a species turns into another species :P
|
Moco Loco is right - evolution isn't directed - there would need to be a selective pressure that allowed traits to form - a survival advantage (or selective breeding programme) towards any such traits.
Simple way of putting it: Evolution does not work like in Pokemon, despite what some people think :P I get homesick all the time, and there's nothing I can really do :( Sometimes I just feel like Earth isn't right for me, and being even slightly different helps a bit. |
That is a funny use of the word homesick I've been seeing around here. I think the definition is so unique it really probably deserves its own word. I feel like that sometimes, but not specifically for Pandora too often. Usually it is just openly directed at outer space. It's like I miss the alien brothers and sisters I'm sure we have. I guess "brothers and sisters" isn't the best phrase for what they'd be, but that's just how I usually think of it. I have lots of vague dreams about meeting aliens.

I had another one last night.
I was Na'vi again (this is seriously turning into kind of a regular thing), and the RDA decided to come back on a different part of Pandora and set up a base camp/attack staging area. I was assigned (by whom I do not know) to scout around the area to see what they were up to. I was ducking in some short shrubs at night, and waiting for signs of humans. The cool thing about this dream was that everything was glowing, too; it wasn't completely dark. So there I was, and then I hear a soldier on guard start walking near me. He turns the corner from around a tree where I'm crouching, and goes "Whoa!" and reaches for his rifle. Before he even has a chance to level it at me, though, I grab my knife and slash his throat open in one clean motion, killing him. He even gurgled a little as he fell. Then, I heard more voices coming towards me. More humans were coming to see what the commotion was (I was on the edge of their encampment) so I leapt into some tall grassy shrubs and layed low while they came to inspect what had happened. Then they left and I ran out of the shrubs, towards a clearing uphill of the encampment, to get picked up by an Ikran (I have no idea if it was mine or not). The rest of the dream sort of "crumbled away", but that was one of the most visceral dreams I've had, ever. And it was pretty creepy that I killed someone and listened to them die, too. .___. |
It had to be yours right? How else could you fly it?

The dream crumbled as it was circling for a landing. It didn't have a rider, though, so that's all I can really assume. |

You didn't see any of my PAD posts neither here nor on any other forum... cos there are none. I crawled thru Pandora Abstinence Syndrome on my own, & it was cruel. Partly, cos I was late to discover the forums, partly... cos I got most of my PAD Survival Guidance thru... dreams like the one I've mentioned. and? whom I was going to share them with? Glory & haleluya to the author of this thread cos it happens to be one of the most comfortable places of the whole planet, & most of the forum for me. "Let's just call it a dream" - & it doesn't matter why I dream this or that & what it has got to do with my brain activity, & no need for theories, formulas & scientific explanations. "Just a dream". But what matters are the answers & the sensations that come. Can they be a guidance in everyday life? Sure they can! Then... what else is there to ask for? The only thing left is to go & apply the "theory" to "practice". This is what I mean by "guidance": Quote:

Raiden: That sounds like one of the coolest dreams I've read here. :D
I still remember a year ago I had a dream where I was flying an Ikran in a supermarket and trying to weave and duck under signs and mountains of cans. :P |
Holy crap that sounds incredible! I'd settle for even a silly dream like that. I just don't seem to have real Pandora dreams of any kind.

The picture of the guy playing video games, and Neytiri surprising him, and hugging him in soooo good in so many ways!! Beside the obvious, there's a picture of a WWII bomber on the wall, models of the Space Shuttle and other interesting planes on display or in boxes.
If I had this dream I would not want to wake up. I have surf dreams that I do not want to wake up from. If I was (with) Neytiri on a beach after surfing, outside of repeating that constantly, I would okay with dying. No having a child with her and raising the child with her would be a life time of near constant bliss. Hey all relationships have their rough spots. That's so you can appreciate the good, and the fun and pleasure of making up. |

The other thing is epigenetics and gene expression. It is not evolution, I know, but it seems that it is a powerful thing to quickly change the appearance and functioning of a species. Here is one example on how the cells that allow for vision are changed by that: Key to 'bifocals' in mangrove fish species: 'Four-eyed fish' shows how gene expression enables adaptation There are also studies showing that traits can be passed on over generations without actually being part of the DNA, but merely ways of expressing that DNA. So there are "lost genes" or genes that are turned off or on depending on what is going on in the world around them and this can be passed on. This also can lead to the development of new species, it seems. Humans could probably adapt to a situation that requires a tail and it would not require a radical change in the DNA, because its all there already (and the occasions these genes are expressed used to be part of the circus). Definitely this alone will not turn humans into 3m tall, blu skinned awesome creatures ;) - But I can imagine that in some people, they can cause a different way of thinking or feeling compared to others... |
