Meh.

Last night, I watched Avatar again (not at the theaters). About an hour into the movie, I realized that it just didn't seem that interesting anymore. I was just like, "Neytiri flying. Meh." Then, "Wait a minute! I should feel all warm inside right about now! Meh?! This is heresy."

The effect must be wearing off. I WANT to still be effected by Avatar. I just don't get that worked up over it anymore, and this scares me a little. What should I do? What does this mean? :(

I might just have to go to the theaters to see it again to get the true effect. But then that would mean that it's just the big screen and funny glasses affecting me and not the story. :S

It's like when you eat chocolate, once you've eaten too much you don't care if it's broccoli or chocolate anymore.

I'd tell you to have a break from Avatar and wait until the DVD release. You should appreciate it more by then.

Sight Unseen 04-02-2010 06:06 PM

Last night was my first time seeing the movie in three weeks.

Maybe you were tired? Or had something on your mind? Both of those have affected my enjoyment of Avatar before, although I did still react.

Sight Unseen 04-02-2010 07:31 PM

I'm trying to find the right words to describe how I feel, please stick with me.

I've never had Avatar affect me as much as the first time, but sadly, then I was trying not to give in to this movie, I was trying to hang on to the society-taught sense of "corniness", I felt horrible, like I had vertigo, but briefly, I felt right as rain as I brought myself to cut loose and let myself drift in the experience. Avatar affected me deeply in the end, but I was not in the right mindset to fully appreciate this. The rest of the times I went to see Avatar at least affected me, but I wanted to truly see, voluntarily. It's been just outside my grasp. I've suffered from something best described as screen-separation. I sadly can't fully immerse myself in the experience anymore, my mind just doesn't want to let go of this false reality that we call society, I keep involuntarily remembering that Avatar, Pandora, Neytiri, the Na'vi, it's all not real, that I'm in a theater. It's like skipping a stone across a deep lake. I can feel the depth, the meaning of Avatar tugging at me, but I just can't, no matter how hard I try, bring myself to see like the first time I went to watch Avatar, to dive into the lake that is Sight. To be immersed in the meaning and understanding that I had an involuntary glimpse of. I've been chasing it ever since then.

I find that sometimes it's difficult - in any situation - to give into the fantasy.

I never really had any kind of depression or anything like that. The best analogy I can come up with about how I feel about it is like riding a really good roller coaster. It's an amazing experience and, at the end, all I want to do is go to the back of the line and ride it again.

I've seen Avatar 10 times in various states. Sometimes, if I have a lot on my mind, no matter what, I just can't get into the fantasy. That was kinda the case yesterday when I made the final 3D showing in town. I had a lot of crap in my head about work and some personal stuff, and it really affected my enjoyment of the film. Other times, when I go into it happy, it's almost as good as seeing it again the first time.

Sight Unseen 04-02-2010 08:04 PM

I haven't been happy. PAD. *sigh*

Obviously, you've seen it one to many times. Give it a rest. I felt the way you did on my fifth viewing. I didn't go back to the theater for six weeks. When I finally saw it again the magic was back.

You cannot wear something out that you love.

For me watching avatar is more like seeing my friends. It just can't get old.

NYSEF816 04-03-2010 01:53 AM

i limited myself to seeing avatar once every other week, and it seemed to keep the magic 'going' for me. i missed the last 2 times, so i havent seen it in 5 weeks and now i def cant wait for the DVD!

now, when i get the dvd we shall see how good my self control is....

but i would consider taking a break, especially if you have a copy readily avaliable somewhere. I did the same thing with donnie darko, pi and american beauty; i watched it so many times i memorized them and they no longer had any real affect on me, whereas the first time i saw them i was entranced.

I've got a fairly large monitor (26") at home & watched with my niece who had never seen it before last night (she was BLOWN away---yes!)---and it was still magical for me---I hold off a couple of weeks at a time----until I feel that my head would explode if I don't at least see it sort-of/kind'a like my first time.....I put on the headphones so I can not be distracted by the outside & when the screen goes dark with the drums & chanting***********O-MY-EWYA!!!!!

Wait a bit--and then make sure you can be "in the zone"--late at nite, no distractions & in a good space--the magic will return

Large monitors are "fairly" cheap these days & sitting 2 ft from one in the dark you can get close to the theatre experience--not as good, but it'll do until the next one comes. (I'm going to have a VERY hard time waiting for it :( )

Yea I like to sit close to my TV when I watch movies. I recently got a nice pair of headphones and sometime this year I am going to be getting a new TV. It's going to be a 40" screen, I'm sure I can fit a 46" but my mom is against the idea. :D I'm going to be no more than 5-6 feet from the TV at all times. Maybe even closer so a 40" might be the perfect size for my room.

(I mentioned headphones because I am going to be buying Avatar in HD from iTunes when it releases on there so I can watch it on my computer whenever I want.) :)

I have a 5.1 Surround Sound system in my room so watching Avatar on Blu Ray is going to be epic! :)

If you have a surround sound system and a HDTV watching Avatar is going to be epic.

Please don't take any of what I said to be "bragging" or "boasting". :)

On topic: The feeling Avatar gives me will never go away. Sometimes it can be a good feeling, other times I feel somewhat sad. But I don't want the feeling to ever go away, it makes me want to make myself a better person and get out there and do things! :)

Sight Unseen 04-03-2010 09:09 PM

Well, thanks for all the suggestions. I just watched Avatar again this morning on the 4.5" screen of my mp3 player (it's not Apple, thank you). I wanted to watch Avatar when I wasn't the least bit tired, and it worked to some extent. I actually cried in the Shutting Down Grace's Lab scene. The movie still affects me I guess, but not at 2am, or when I have a 3 page report to write. So, I wrote the report, went to bed, and had my mp3 player ready to watch the movie as soon as I woke up. I've found if you have a clear mind, Avatar has a much deeper effect, but never near the same as the first time. It just wears off too d*mn fast. :(

Also, my mom won't get off my back about me sitting too close to my monitor :/. It's 17" and I sit 1-2 ft away. I think this is normal, however the parental units disagree.

The environment you're in when you watch a movie affects your state of mind, so I wouldn't discount watching Avatar on the big screen because of "gimmicks" like the screen and sound system. When you're in a theatre where the lights are dark, nobody can see you and you may feel more comfortable (I know I do). If I were watching Avatar at home, I'd feel sort of awkward knowing that someone might come in and see my reaction to the movie, and that nagging feeling in the back of your mind may detract from the overall experience. The movie can also be more overwhelming -- and thereby be more effective -- when you're in a theatre, because there are no distractions and you can focus completely on the film. :)

I kind of know how you feel.

I watched Avatar 18 times in 3 weeks and I have to admit, the feeling was slowly being lost for me too. Then I took a 4 week break and when I watched it again, the feelings I experienced were even more intense than the first time I saw it.

So basically, like pretty much everyone else has said, take a break from it for a while. When you come back, the effect will be even better.
