Hi guys. I just got here and found this thread. The Neytiri-love is already high in this new forum, so I thought I'd offer this to you. This is the first poem I wrote for the thread of the same name in AF. I'm sure many of the people here haven't seen it before. I hope you like it.

Ode to Neytiri

And now we meet on moonlet fair,
As magical creatures fill the air.
In blue skin clad and elegant face
You pull me close in love’s embrace.

Your flashing eyes, twin sun-orbs bright
And sparkling skin, ‘neath pale moonlight
Remove all fears of perilous height
And guide love’s fierce and tender night.

Your joyous laugh and playful way
Is pure delight ‘neath Hometree’s day.
No greater love has any known
Than what, to me, your heart has shown.

On Toruk wings by day we soar
O’er sparkling lake and gold-flecked shore
And mountains high and verdant land
We see together, hand in hand.

And here you lie all veiled in night
With warrior’s soul and heart-felt might.
‘Neath silver stars and Eywa’s grace,
No higher joy than your embrace.

No greater love can ever be…
I see you, and you see me.
And now—oh, azure goddess fair,
Wrapped in strands of angel’s hair
I sing my love and joy to thee
My sweet and beautiful, Neytiri.

Neytiri_Quest, ever considered restarting the 'An Ode to Neytiri and assorted poems' thread?

Hi, Immo39. I've had time to check out this site a little more thoroughly, and that's exactly what I'll do. I have 4 more Neytiri-poems that I've posted to AF. I'll make a thread and put them up here sometime today (hopefully). Thanks! :)

I'm not quite sure what it is about Neytiri,
That draws me in, perhaps it's her incredible personality.

On your suggestion I have just created a thread in the Poetry section called 'Ode to Neytiri' and other Neytiri-poems by me and populated it with the 5 Neytiri-poems I've written so far. I'll still post new poems to this thread as I write them, though, since the thread title is so appropriate. :)

If she told me " jump " id jump.... We all agree about those magnificent orbs, fantastic lean body, personality & posture. Even the tail appears to be naughty and innocent at the same time.... but there is something more... something... f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c, i guess only god & JC knows what it is....

Neytiri_Quest 03-18-2010 09:52 PM

Hello, everybody. I have written 5 commentaries in an attempt to understand and explain why we all love Neytiri so much.

zongtseng was kind enough to create a section in the Fan Work area called 'Fan Articles and Commentary' to accommodate this type of writing. And I just created a thread there called The 'Why We Love Neytiri' commentary series and populated it with those 5 commentaries. I hope you check it out. :)

Any future articles I write will be posted both in this thread (because the title is so appropriate for them) and in the new one as well. Enjoy!

Neytiri: To Sylwanin, Dying Young

This is a slight departure from my normal Neytiri-poems. I started to write one, then got an incredible surge of emotions surrounding her older sister, Sylwanin, who was at Grace's school along with Neytiri.

Sylwanin is never seen in AVATAR (other than in a couple of pictures tacked up at the remote site), and there’s only a couple of paragraphs about her in the script. She and a couple of other young Na’vi set fire to a bulldozer in an attempt to stop the cross-cutting in the forest and were followed back to Grace’s school by RDA soldiers. They killed Sylwanin right in front of the young Neytiri.

The poem takes place years before Jake’s arrival on Pandora. And it’s written from Neytiri’s point of view, shortly after her sister’s death.

As always, it’s for you, the Neytiri clan. I hope you like it.

Neytiri: To Sylwanin, Dying Young

In the somber silence of my inner self,
When mind and spirit have slipped their chains;
I’ll see your face before me shine,
And try to rise above my pains.

Sylwanin, dear, I loved you so!
As only a younger sister could—
But then the Terran monsters came
And took your life, near where I stood.

No more will we two—side by side—
Run Through verdant forests, green;
No more your smiling face I’ll see,
‘Neath bioluminescent sheen.

You tried to stop their rampant ways—
Killing our trees, spoiling our land;
But all they know are guns and lies,
And now you’re dead by their cruel hand!

No longer can I hope to show
The love I’ve always felt for you;
Or learn from you to string a bow,
Or how to drink the morning’s dew.

I tried to stop them—grabbed one’s arm,
And flung him down with warrior’s cry;
But then I fell and knew no more,
And woke with wound beneath my eye.

So many things I could have learned,
So many games we might have played!
But now you lie in shallow grave—
cold and still as my knife’s blade.

Your precious soul, from out the grasp
Of sand and foam did slip away!
And now in Eywa’s arms you rest,
Awakened to a brighter day.

Yet still can I, amid the gloom
That seeks to bind me to this place,
Recall the joy and love I’ve known
Since first I saw your radiant face.

A single atokirina drifts
To light upon your solemn brow;
I place a flower at your feet
Hoping to understand, somehow.

Perhaps one day someone will come
And soothe my anger and my fears;
But ‘til that time, oh sister…
Oh, Sylwanin, my beautiful sister, dear—
I am too empty, even for tears….

Neytiri: To Sylwanin, Dying Young

Hmm, beautiful NQ. You spoil the Neytiri clan with your wondrous work. Evocative and poignant, but also heartrending.:( I could clearly imagine Neytiri sitting alone by the river and thinking your very words, no doubt near a spot where she would have swam and played with Sylwanin in happier times. She would have been forlorn and lost, keenly feeling the sheer absence of her beloved sister.

They seemed very fond of each other, just a few years apart. Neytiri would have looked up to her older sibling, wanting to be just as good as her. Sylwanin would have dearly loved her younger sister, learning patience and restraint while taking in Neytiri’s youthful exuberance. I can see the both of them playing and taunting each other, Neytiri probably a touch jealous of her older sister’s accomplishments. Sylwanin’s Iknimaya must have been a difficult time for Neytiri, for she would have wanted to accompany her sister but could not. She would also have been happy for her sister when the latter came back with her ikran, but also somewhat envious.

Sylwanin’s death must have shattered Neytiri, but her sorrow and despair wouldn’t have lasted. They shared the same courage and steely determination, had the same strength of will and indomitable character. Despite the cruel unfairness of her sister’s passing, Neytiri would have risen to the challenge and would have sworn that she would now live life enough for two. Everything she would do henceforth, she would do not only for herself, but also for Sylwanin. Neytiri would have pushed herself to the breaking point, raking in the achievements and acquiring great skills and even greater fame in the clan, but also losing bits of herself in the process. She probably wouldn’t have realised that herself had it been pointed out to her. Eytukan, olo’eyktan of the Omaticaya and her sempul, would have been proud of the strength and worthiness of his ’ite, and Mo’at, the Tsahik of the Omaticaya and her sa’nok, would have been equally pleased with Neytiri’s faith and determination. Would they have known that what drove their daughter to such lofty heights was a burning desire for her to give meaning to her sister’s untimely demise and not undermine Eywa’s decision to allow her death?

People wondered on the forums why Neytiri didn’t have a mate yet; posters hypothesised that as the next Tsahik she was waiting for her promised – Tsu’tey – to become olo’eyktan. I now think that the real reason was that she wasn’t ready to love yet, not Tsu’tey nor anyone else. Sylwanin would have been the first one to mate given she was the eldest, and Neytiri would have looked on with happiness and again a bit of yearning to get there herself. With Sylwanin gone, I have the feeling that Neytiri couldn’t yet bring herself to bind with someone else. That would have required a level of inner peace that she hadn’t managed to attain. Of course, Jake came along and changed all of that. We know how that beautiful story unfolded: Jake eventually broke through Neytiri’s protective shields of anger and resentment and made her realise that there was good in everyone, even in the Sky People. In the end, Neytiri decided that Sylwanin herself would have forgiven her tormentors had she seen some good in them, and if her sister could do this, then so could she.

Now, see what you’ve done? I’ll be teary for the rest of the afternoon. Good work ma tsmukan.:)

"A NA'VI WOMAN. She is young, and lithe as a cat, with a
long, slender neck, muscular shoulders, and nubile

here... she is devastatingly beautiful. For a girl with a
tail."

I can certainly see this being the case. I had the realization while finishing the latter parts of the poem that some of these thoughts might be running through Neytiri's mind during Sylwanin's funeral ceremony. That's why I made reference to the atokirina drifting to her brow, and Neytiri placing a flower at her feet. It seemed to me this would be the time and place for her to feel the greatest amount of emotion since the actual event of her sister's death. However, I like the image of her alone by the river, reflecting on the events surrounding Sylwanin's death from a place at which they had both known such good, happy times.

Yes, I can clearly see this in my mind's eye--motion, color, feelings... all of it. It's like a separate movie playing out in three dimensions inside my head.

Quote:

Would they have known that what drove their daughter to such lofty heights was a burning desire for her to give meaning to her sister’s untimely demise and not undermine Eywa’s decision to allow her death?
This is very close to what went through my head as the poem started unfolding and taking shape. For a time, Neytiri would have been numb with sadness--and moody. She would probably also have been short-tempered and easily prone to fits of anger for no apparent reason. She would have rarely smiled. Then, at some point, she would thrown off these unworthy shackles and started living--not only for herself, but for Sylwanin as well.

She would have driven herself to excel in all things, frantically struggling to live for two, as you say. She would make her parents proud, but would also start losing some of her child-like innocence in the process. And her hatred for the Sky People would be like a festering wound. But her main driving force would be to give her sister's death meaning, while keeping the memories of her alive through her skills and deeds.

Quote:

People wondered on the forums why Neytiri didn’t have a mate yet; posters hypothesised that as the next Tsahik she was waiting for her promised – Tsu’tey – to become olo’eyktan. Yes, exactly... we're on the same page with this. She wasn't yet ready to bond with anyone. And bonding with Tsu'tey would be a constant and painful reminder of her sister... and the fact that she had been unable to take her proper place in the Clan. For Neytiri, bonding with Tsu'tey would have just...been...wrong, as Wainfleet would have said.

Quote:

We know how that beautiful story unfolded: Jake eventually broke through Neytiri’s protective shields of anger and resentment and made her realise that there was good in everyone, even in the Sky People. Well said. It recently occurred to me that the reason for writing this poem has been building up for a few weeks now. In the Why We Love Neytiri commentaries, I've been exploring all aspects of Neytiri's beauty and strength and character. But there's always been that nagging question of why she was initially so suspicious and filled with anger toward Sky People. Also, her reluctance to teach Jake or show him much patience didn't quite fit into her persona as the ideal woman. So I was on a quest to reconcile these incongruities for myself, and then for others.

Once I reflected on the picture of Sylwanin and Neytiri, and the couple of paragraphs in the script, the whole scenario rushed forth, threatening to overwhelm me emotionally. I realized it was Sylwanin who was supposed to be Tsu'tey's mate, as well as tsahik. With her sister gone, those roles would now go to Neytiri. Also, because of her residual confusion, anger, and turmoil, it was almost impossible for Jake to catch a break with Neytiri initially. But through his strength, courage, and good nature he finally got through her barriers and she felt truly alive again.

Now imagine what a heart-rending feeling she would have had after learning of Jake's deception just prior to the destruction of Hometree. She's just learned to trust again, has opened herself up fully and mated with Jake, and now feels completely betrayed. (Zoe played this beautifully, by the way.) With this new understanding about Neytiri's feelings for Sylwanin, and the powerful effect her death had on her, that pain would have been even more tragic and gut-wrenching.

Indeed, reactions to the Sky People and their avatars seem to greatly vary within the Na’vi, or at least the Omaticaya clan, for that is the group we know best. Some appear to be simply curious, as we’ve seen when Jake is first brought to Hometree by Neytiri and Tsu’tey’s warriors, while others are merely indifferent, as if dreamwalkers weren’t worth their attention. Others, such as Eytukan and Tsu’tey, are wary of the Sky People and their dreamwalker agents, and would have nothing to do with them if they could.

Neytiri, however, seems definitely wrathful when first encountering Jake in the forest. Even when she reluctantly spares his life in the forest – and only because Eywa herself interceded on his behalf – she still brutally strikes him across the face with her bow simply because he dared touch her, as if his touch was unbearable. Even when he professes needing her help she is ready to abandon him in the forest to certain death, until Eywa again intervenes to change her mind.

As you’ve pointed out, when instructed to teach Jake the ways of the Na’vi she does so grudgingly, ensuring that Jake can see quite clearly how much of a chose this is to her and how little she thinks of him. All of this is clearly at odds with what we know of her personality, that of a generous, selfless, courageous, respectful and loyal person. There just had to be an unambiguous reason for the profound dislike that Neytiri had for the Sky People dreamwalker.

Quote:

My thoughts exactly. Neytiri was living what should have been her sister’s life, including her position in the clan’s hierarchy and the accompanying betrothed. So not only was all this happening as a result of the Sky People soldiers having murdered her beloved older sister in addition to the sadness she was still experiencing as a result of her loss, she was now tasked with teaching one of their ‘demons in a false body’ the pure ways of her own People. That Jake managed to extricate himself from that web of anger and resentment to find the happy, joyful and loving woman within is a testament not only to Jake’s courage and determination, but also to Neytiri’s ultimate goodness and strength.

Even with the powerful and heartrending way that scene is played, we can barely imagine the turmoil, anguish and confusion that would have been going on in Neytiri’s mind. Finding love and feeling happiness again after all those sorrow-filled years and having that brutally wrenched from her, like losing a loved one all over again, this time by admitted betrayal. That she rose from that tragedy once more is an almost unbelievable testament to her inner strength.

Beautiful work Neytiri_Quest! http://www.avatar-forums.com/images/...lies/smile.gif
