EXCELLENT! :hi: Irayo Sempu for finding that one and HNM for pulling it together. How about that, a team of all the tallents! Looks like you were burning the midnight oil HNM!:shoop:

I've had a quick look at the survey and think we could loose the 'reason' box in question 3 and keep question 2 to just a yes/no. Then the question regarding how much people are willing to pay can be included, which is quite an important one for someone planning the cost of the event in comparison to how many might attend. Also can the numbers continue from page 1 to page 2 as they start from 1 again on page 2.

Anyway I like it. It makes it so much easier for people to take part. Just one question, how is the data collected and in what form?

CyanRachel, thanks for offering to post on Na'viBlue and Avatar Prime. Once we've got the survey polished we'll be ready to go. So hopefully in the next day or so. Then we can start collecting the data...

Thanks again folks. This will be our first step that will helpfully bring us together...

Human No More 01-25-2011 09:43 PM

Hmm, I must have missed that one - updated version with the other changes: [SURVEY PREVIEW MODE] Na'vi meetup survey

As for the data, it is viewed on the site, unfortunately it can't be downloaded without a pro account, but I can post it here :)
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/6529/examplew.png
(Data shown is me having tested it :P )

Alan 01-25-2011 10:22 PM

Looking good HNM. I just filled in the test one so you might have a response from me ;)

Anyway, I've been looking at the Survey Money website to see what it offers. It seems that the Basic/Free account limits you to 100 responses only. I'm thinking that there may well be more than 100 people on all the forums who might take part in the survey...well you would hope, which means it isn't really adequate.

So that leaves the £24 per month option! This option gives us up to 1000 responses. Do people think this is enough? I'm thinking maybe? Duno.. But you get to download either the fancy charts it produces or also the raw data in Excel format, which means we can do all sorts of fancy pie charts.

I'm willing to stump up £24 for the one off and then I can cancel the membership. I've checked that I can do this and that there isn't a minimum term other than one month.

Or do folks think that it would be better to send out the original word version and collate the data ourselves...err well I guess that would be me!

I'm open to suggestions. What do folks think? Lets see if we can get to ball rolling soon.

Human No More 01-26-2011 12:02 AM

Hmm, I didn't think to check that :P

We could always collect it from the thread to save people having to edit and upload the file back.

Alan 01-26-2011 07:06 AM

Do you mean put the questions at the start of the thread and they simply reply? Hmm, might be a bit hard for them to flip back to the first page to the questions as it gets filled up with posts. Also might be a bit difficult to collect all the data in from each of the forums. But I like your style though! No cost.:)

Hmmm, if it's ok with everyone I'll do the £24 thing and at least then it will be the same for everyone and automatically collects the data which we can download. We can then get up to 1000 responses, which should be more than enough - imagine them all turning up to a convention!

Is there any way I can access the survey you set up at all HNM and boost it up to the Pro one?

Once we get it sorted we can then "ride out...as fast as you can...my brothers, sisters...and tell them that Toruk Makto calls to them...and that this...this is our convention!!!":xD:

Sorry I couldn't help it. I got all excited and it has only just turned 7 in the morning!:shoop:

Kiyevame,

Alan

Human No More 01-26-2011 10:33 PM

hmm, no, I think you'd need my login... You can just copy from the preview link I posted :P

Alan 01-26-2011 11:00 PM

Right ok then, I'll get stuck into it tomorrow night and hopefully we'll have our survey ready so we can go and carpet bomb the forums and see what response we get! Thanks for your work on it HNM. Stay tuned!!!:)

Sempu 01-27-2011 07:06 AM

Might want to see if you crack 100 responses first...

Alan 01-27-2011 07:12 AM

Too late!:D Signed up! In fact I've just done it 5 minutes ago. Don't mind, though. It's for a worthwhile cause, if it helps the possibility of bringing people together. I'll try and get the survey done tonight and then we can post it out and see what happens.

Right, must dash. Work is getting in the way again:P

Alan 01-27-2011 08:52 PM

Ok folks I have done the survey and it works! Apparently one person is up for going to an Avatar convention...ooo...that was me! :xD:

Right well, now we go and send our survey out to the clans. If memory serves me right CyanRachel was willing to post on Na'viBlue and Avatar Prime and HNM was willing to post on LearnNa'vi. Hope your two are still up for posting on these forums. Then I will post here and on AF.

Can I suggest that we adopt the 'Ikran raid' approach :war: and posting it on several of the subject areas rather than just the Meet-Up threads of the forums. The reason being that not everyone visits all the threads and we need as many fans to take part as possible to get a good cross-section of the Avatar fan base.

So can I suggest that besides posting on the Meet-Up thread that we also post on the 'General Avatar Discussion' and 'General Discussion' areas as a minimum. It would also be worth checking out which other threads receive a lot of fan traffic and post it there.

I've prepared the following message below to help, but feel free to use your own words, however, we must include the closing date.

Well I think that it everything. Many thanks for helping out.:hi: Lets see what responses we get. Here's the message:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject Title: Avatar Fan Convention/Meet Up - Questionnaire to Fill in Now!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Kaltxi ma aysmukan sì aysmuke,

Appologies for the multiple posting of this message, but it is to capture as many of you as possible!

A number of us Avatar fans have been considering the possibility of bringing the clans together to a meet-up, convention or pre-organised convention. However, before anyone puts effort into organising such an event it would be a good idea to gauge the level of interest.

To help get this level of understanding a simple ten question survey has been pulled together. You can take part in the survey by clicking on the link below:

Avatar Fan's Convention/Meet-Up Survey

It will take less than five minutes to answer.

The closing date for the survey is 4th February 2011, which gives you a week to take part. After which we will collate the data an publish the results as soon as we can.

There is no guarantee that an Avatar meet-up or convention will happen, but the survey will help to decide if we can take our forum clans to a whole new level. Irayo for you time.

Eywa ngahu..."

Human No More 01-27-2011 09:59 PM

Done, and posted on Learn Na'vi, although I'm not going to spam it myself, nobody likes spam and the extra threads will just get deleted, merged or closed.

Human No More 01-27-2011 10:31 PM

Well, the best idea, I think, is to have a US-based one and a UK/europe one, due to the large distance involved between the two and the majority of fans being in one of the two.

Irayo HNM. I know what your saying. Just didn't know any other way of making people aware of it as not as many folks visit the meet up section as the others. At least there is a marker there for them to follow now which will take them to the survey.

I've posted it on AF now too.

Providing it's local to me :) have provided my details on the survey but if you want any more info just let me know. I'm going to have to get used to this site first and I know I'm a newbie so people will be like 'who the heck are you?' but the survey ends in a week which will hopefully give me some time to get a little more involved here :)

Irayo for doing the survey. This is a fact finding mission at the moment. If the results come good then we can start exploring the next steps. In the meantime welcome to ToS. Hope you enjoy it. :hi:

Alan 01-27-2011 10:46 PM

Well we've had 16 replies so far and it's only been up about an hour!

CyanRachel 01-28-2011 02:41 AM

Kaltxi, Alan!

I did it -- I posted the news about the survey on AvatarPrime and Naviblue. So hopefully you'll be getting even more responses.

Even though I had already submitted my survey answers to you (in the original Word doc you created), do you need me to fill out this new version of the survey too and submit it?

Human No More 01-28-2011 04:41 AM

Feedback from the thread on learn Na'vi:
Quote:

One thing I kinda forgot and so I'm going to add it in here: If possible I would love to see this convention held somewhere (and by this I mean venue, not location) that has reasonably easy access to some kind of wilderness, either forest, park or...something... and perhaps include workshops for sustainability, like seed-saving, backyard gardening, rooftop gardening (just the first things that spring to my mind) or ways to conserve energy. It wouuld seem, to me, to be a helpful theme for those of us who love Avatar and Eywa'eveng and want to extend that love to doing something for our own planet as well.
A nice idea :)

Irayo for posting the survey for us. :hi: We've had 36 response so far!

Yeah, if you could do the survey again that would be great. Unfortunately I can't add your answers to the collected data on Survey Money.

Thanks again.

Yeah, definitely a great idea. I've had a quick look at some of the response (will try and post them as soon as I can) an that is a theme that has come up once or twice.

Alan 01-30-2011 03:06 PM

Hello there,

Just thought I'd give a quick run down on the results so far...

-One person would not attend a get together!
-About 3/4 of people filling the survey are male
-The majority of people are in the 16-21 age bracket
-Most folks would travel to a neighboring state/county for a meet up
-They would prefer a weekend event
-Best time would be around July/August
-Vast majority are from the US, followed by UK, Australia and Canada
-Plenty of great ideas being put forward from camping Na'vi style through to an Avatar tattoo stand!

We need to keep our survey on the boil for the rest of the week if we can to get as many people taking part as possible. I've bumped the thread on AF, which has had a fair few responses.

Come the end of the next week, I'll down load the info into Excel and put the info into some easy to understand format. Pie charts spring to mind at the moment...

X.,.Pandora.,.X 01-30-2011 03:38 PM

I like pie charts haha, can't wait, this will be awesome

Alan 01-31-2011 10:10 PM

I've just checked up on how our survey is cooking and we are up to 68 responses so far. Feel free to PM your friends to take part. I'll probably put a reminder out mid week or so. I think this will work out to be really useful information for anyone wanting to plan a meet-up or convention.

James of terra 01-31-2011 11:06 PM

I aswered the questions, did you get them?? Hope you did alan. I must thank you in your great efforts for all of us here. Again thanks alan.

Alan 01-31-2011 11:41 PM

Irayo for your kind words James.:embarrassed: I just wish I could do more. I see so many threads I wish I could join in. There are so many good folks on these forums it just makes me wish we could all meet up some day.

Although the survey is annonymous, I think I recognised your survey response ;)

We still need to get as many responding as possible during this week so feel free to spread the word. I'll collate the results and share them as soon as I can oover the weekend.

If it enables aysmukan si aysmuke to come together then it will have all been worth it.

James of terra 01-31-2011 11:52 PM

TOO bad we could not drag the uk oof the coast of us and canada, you guy would be closer to the avatar action..LOL. Well Alan, I ment it, and you can always ask for help! I for one would help ya as much as possible, and so would other I am sure. Thanks Alan. Oh I whatched the vid on dvd, it was great.

Alan 02-02-2011 08:50 PM

Just a quick update folks on the Avatar Convention survey. So far we have 74 responses. I'll be downloading the results into excel on Saturday and pulling them together over the weekend so people can see what the outcome was.

Until then keep encourageing folks to take part!

Kiyevame,

Alan

James of terra 02-03-2011 12:00 AM

Look forward to the results......drum roll please....

Alan 02-06-2011 07:38 PM

Kaltxi folks!:hi:

Well, we've gone and done it! 100 surveys on the dot!!!

I've spent the weekend (inbetween going to see Avatar at the IMAX...can't believe it's still on there) collating the results from all the surveys into an Excel file with a tab for each question which contains the responses. When I downloaded the data it came with pie charts already created, which was nice! I've also added a few more in selective places to help interpret the information.

The other thing I have done is done a mini write up to summarise the information this is as a word document, which I have also converted to a PDF. Hopefully this will allow those who don't have Excel to still be able to view the results.

I purposely didn't let on what the results were through last week so as not to colour people's thoughts before taking part. However, now the survey it complete I guess you will be wanting to see the results?

Well, I've uploaded the files to Mediafire, so if you just click on the links below they should enable you to open up the files to view. Enjoy:

Excel Version
Word Version
PDF Version

Your thoughts on the collected information will be interesting...

I'll be postings a new thread relating to the information for everyone shortly.

Human No More 02-07-2011 01:00 AM

Very interesting :)

Quote:

I'd love if we could get some cast or crew there, wouldnt even have to be a Zoe or Sam, just a Jahnel Curfman, or Alicia Vela-Bailey, or Kevin Dorman would be really awesome.
This is a great idea - while it would be amazing to get JC, Zoe or Sam, even having anyone from it would be a great idea and others will likely be less busy and so more likely to be able to :)

I guess much of the data (age group, etc) is as expected. For the continent, I'd say that if we arrange this then a US and UK/europe one would make sense. Australia/NZ unfortunately have a relatively small group so they would have a harder time reaching somewhere.

James of terra 02-07-2011 03:15 AM

Great work alan, I enjoyed seeing the results.

Alan 02-07-2011 07:17 AM

Glad you found it interesting James. It might be the first time we have done an Avatar Fan survey. Some really good stuff came out of it.

Yeah, well, I think I mentioned me having a cunning plan? Well, the cunning plan is that I contact the Seattle Science-Fiction museum where the Avatar exhibition is being held and forward the results onto them and 'suggest' the put something on for us fans, even if it is only a meet up area for us all. As I suspect there will be a lot of us there.

Anyway, we'll have to see what they say. There is still time for them to do something I would have thought. As they say, knock and the door will be opened..hopefully!

Besides I would have thought they would have had someone from the Avatar film team to open the exhibition anyway, if not JC. I doubt they would just have the security guard unlock the doors for us to just stampede in!:xD:

MatiasArana 02-09-2011 04:01 AM

Have you checked this?

Alan 02-12-2011 12:57 PM

Kaltxi folks :hi:

Just a quick update. I've forwarded the survey result to our friends on Avatar Wiki who are starting the process of organising an Avatar Convention in Washington DC next year. Follow the link left by Matias above to find out more.

Also...

I have forwarded a copy of the results to the Science Fiction museum in Seattle, where the Avatar Exhibition is being held. Don't hold your breath though, we might not hear anything, but you never know...

In the mean time if you have any thoughts on the subject keep posting!;)

Kiyevame,

Alan

Human No More 02-13-2011 07:53 PM

We need something for the non-US people as well! :)

ZitaX 02-14-2011 05:08 PM

Yeah, the US is a little far! I would be willing to go almost anywhere in Europe for a convention like this!

Alan 02-14-2011 07:17 PM

...And in order to do that a team of people who are willing to put wheels in motion is required and to liase with those who are planning the one in the US to pool ideas and problem solving and perhaps make them happen on the same day for a link up...

Or perhaps the Science Fiction Museum could be convinced to allow some real-life avatars into the event. I could attach my HD camcorder to my head, have ToS up on a smartphone, and have a live HD webcast here on ToS with people Shoutboxing me instructions on where to go and what to examine. And I would be absolutely obedient. ;)

Oooo, now that is just asking for some fun..."back a bit...a bit further...a bit more......SPLASH!" :xD:

Seriously though, that is a really good idea. I have actually send a letter to the Science Museum in Seattle to ask if they are going to be laying anything on for us fans, along with a copy of the Avatar Fan Convention survey results. I'm not holding my breath for a response, but you never know.... I sent it on Saturday so all being well they should receive it by the end of this week.

Anyway, if you are going there mate, I'll keep a look out for you. Shouldn't be hard to spot. I can just imagine someone interstucting you to run into a wall or something...well you did say you "would be absolutely obedient". :xD: Sorry, that's just my daft humour for you! It is a good idea, though.

Alas, yes. I am one of the loathsome people who would have to try harder to miss it than to go. My employee ID is even good for 70% off admission.

Yes, such a thing might require the somewhat contradictory establishment of "Avatar Prime Directives," to include such things as, "An avatar does not enter opposite-sex restrooms, intentionally cause injury to him-/herself or others, shout profanity, etc." :)

I'm in for that :)
