Submerged in mineral oil? never seen of that before. It does look pretty neat, until you need to change or rma something

Yeah, that wouldn't be that convenient

It works very well though, because it has a huge heat capacity and is nonconductive.

Better option: fluorinert. It has a lower viscosity than water, so removing parts won't be a problem.

It's November 2010, am3 mobo breaks out of warranty. Replacement: $140

December, buy an AMD 1090T. Nerdgasm: $250

January, buy a CPU cooler for am3: $70

Pissed off I didn't wait a month and get a fscking Sandy Bridge i5: Priceless.

Made a small upgrade today, got an athlon x4 640 to replace my x2 260. Quad-core feels good man

It's all about the number of CPU usage graphs in your task manager.

I always laugh a little when I'm reminded that Intel named a chip "i5". Near where I live, there is a horribly congested interstate highway named "I-5". Reminds me of the story where American car company Chevrolet tried to market their car named "Nova" in Mexico (in Spanish, "no va" translates roughly to "no go"). Oops.

Heh, "No va" literally means "It won't go."

Well, now I'm completely broke, and the next time I save up a decent amount of money we'll have the massively expensive Bulldozer II and the GTX795, which as soon as I buy it it will be obsolete in .5 seconds. It would be nice if I could put the cycle on pause and have at least a week where I felt good dropping some green on an upgrade, not "Ten minutes later they will come out with something $50 cheaper, with more memory/L2/whatever that uses half the power and oc's 800 more mhz."

And I am a fan of AMD for 3 reasons:
-Sockets don't change as often
-Procs usually cheaper and OC well
-Decent Intel mobos are obscenely expensive

That said, Intel can do in 4 cores what amd can do in 6. But, I can rip a 4hour dvd in 20 minutes, so I'm happy at the moment I guess.

If you're a rabid PC gamer, I suppose there might be more pressure to "keep up." Fortunately, for what I do, I've found that adding more/larger hard disks and additional RAM can keep me happy with a machine for quite a while. And when I'm unhappy, the computer just gets a new job (e.g., gets turned into a NAS or media center). It takes quite a long time for a computer to become "useless" to me.

Definitely - I like gaming, but I don't pursue the latest games for shinyshinyshiny, I focus on good games, so I can get away with upgrading a bit less often, although I do need a new graphics card at the moment.

Heh, I need a new gpu as well. But iirc you have a 285 with a phenom x4, you'd have to upgrade your cpu as well to keep it from being a botteneck. That said, I think I'm going to either wait until the gtx6 series or get a couple 460s, I might even consider a 6870 from ati. Money is the problem right now though. I wish I had a star-trek style replicator. Tacos, coke, and computer parts on demand.

Indeed, that would be awesome

Well, hopefully if this job works out then I'll be able to afford a new CPU as well, but I'm sure I can get a bit more out of this one on the overclock. As it is, things are GPU-limited right now.

Or me... I could flash it with the gtx275 bios and put it in sli to justify the cost of my motherboard.

Why does everybody like bose? They make complete s*** and sell it expensively. For example, the Bose Acoustimass 6 system. I got the "bass module" (note they don't call it a sub, freq. response starts at 50Hz) free from a dumpster a few days ago, and was pretty excited because it was supposed to be really expensive. So I go ahead and hook it up to my system, I immediately notice it emits an aura of antibass. No big deal, I remove the back plate to reverse the speaker contacts (it comes 180degrees out of phase from the factory) and find this.

$1300 will get you 4 crappy 5.25in "woofers", a handful of made in mexico electrolytic capacitors, and some 12V automotive bulbs.

Wait... What? Indeed, it is a somewhat ghetto solution to current limiting the system if someone hooks it up to a system larger than 100W, as a bulb gets hotter its resistance increases. Its fragility also increases, and its high frequency response decreases. It works, but sounds like total crap, if you've ever heard a bose lifestyle system in action outside of the carefully-tuned store display (which is fed by a $15k DSP to make it sound better) you'd agree with me.

The "bass module" is expected to produce frequencies between 20-700 Hz because the cheap 2.5in paper cone cube speakers can't handle lower midrange, and only sound acceptable up to 15khz.

Anyways, end rant mode, I hooked it up in parallel with a Yamaha 250W 10in sub, bad idea. It turns out that if you want to send a signal to all 4 drivers in the module, you have to hook them up in parallel, which gives you a resistance of 1ohm, which would fry a class AB amp, and sent my class D TDA1562Q amp into short-protect fault mode, requiring me to move my 150lb desk (and the 250lbs of stuff on it) to reset my amp, which is located behind the aformentioned crapton of office furniture. Take my advice, stay away from bose. For that same amount of $ you could get 3 pairs of Dayton B652's, an Epik Empire sub, and a couple reference amps.
