Default IBM Supercomputer Beats Jeopardy! Genius Ken Jennings

Interesting stuff, definitely give it a read!

Jeopardy! genius Ken Jennings on what it's like to play against a supercomputer.

It would only have been a fair contest if they dialed down it's computing speed to that of the contestants. You combine millisecond computing with all the knowledge compiled in the world and... duh..
I would like to know what the computer will do with all that money?

From the original Willy Wonka movie starring Gene Wilder:

"What would a computer do with a lifetime supply of chocolate?"

You guys seem to be totally missing the huge challenges involved with natural language processing. And obviously it doesn't have 'all the knowledge in the world'- it doesn't even connect to the internet. Also, all the money Watson won (1 million USD) was given to two charities.

Doesn't make any difference whether or not the computer overcame "huge challenges" with language. It's still a supercomputer, and I'm not surprised it won. It's not like this technology is groundbreaking; we already had it.

If they pitched it as a game of Watson instead of a game of Jeopardy, it wouldn't seem as unfair, I suppose.

I don't get too excited about these human vs. machine things, honestly. Yawn. Evidence that purpose-built devices are better than the competition stretches back to minus infinity. Cool technology, silly application. IMO. Of course, taking your shiny new technology on a gameshow gets it out there faster than a research paper in a technology journal would, so...

Humans don't have a clock speed - it's actually difficult to imagine how even an equivalent would be determined, as the human brain could easily be considered a parallel system, and the structure is entirely different.
The challenge is in processing the question to determine WHAT is being asked and then forming a coherent reply - it's not like it was beating a human at making calculations, ether naturally, or in a game such as chess - humans and computers process information in completely different ways at the most basic level (although humans can apply it to perform computer-like operations such as binary arithmetic, it's just extremely slow, the same goes for computer systems producing a neural network or analogous system, or performing tasks such as pattern recognition in software).
