So I'm trying to pick out a few trails to go on. I've only just begun, but I might as well share what I've found thus far.

Here's a list of day hikes from the Olympic NPS website. There are a lot for us to choose from, and they seem to have a good range of strenuousness/difficulty, so we should all be able to do a few of these together.
http://www.nps.gov/olym/upload/dayhikes-3.pdf

I'm also looking for some longer treks that would require spending at least one night in backcountry. Am currently perusing backpacker.com...

Also, here's a pretty helpful map showing where all the campsites and trails are.

^^^several trails to pick from is a good idea. Also: can we have different difficulty routes? At least two - one for superfit people with larger than life stamina (like the two of you above :P) and one for those who would bring up the rear, as Alan once put it :D

I know I have almost the whole year to get fit (inspired to jog in the morning by a dangerously sporty eylan :P) but I just like to walk at my pace & stare at everything. So if we have to get Fast to a certain breathtaking place... I'd rather take it Slowly at a shorter route. & some other people would too, probably. All said, there are still months to go...

Aketuan & EG, please tell me: if this post a suggestion that would fit much better on "Come into the wilderness..." I'll delete it from here & post it there.

Aketuan 09-01-2011 05:59 PM

apache_blanca: great ideas. Yesterday we did discuss a little on having several options for people. One option could be to take a group backpacking for one of the nights...when we have a group hike, we could have an extension on the initial hike to make it longer/more difficult for people too...or just have 2 different hikes...lots of choices.

Anyway, would you like to join us next week for a planning discussion? :D

Very true - I think that what some of the people here want is not going to be possible for most of us - I'd still like to go if possible, but not if it means going 9001 miles up mountains.

mikkowilson 09-02-2011 02:26 AM

We're going to the mountains, we're going to the mountains!

So anyway after taking some time to review the map/trails, I am thinking that we should go with the Sul Duc Campground. It is less popular than the Hoh campground, and offers 82 spots. Also, the Hoh campground only has one trail leading from it and is 10+ miles on that trail to the next intersection. The Sul Duc is more secluded and has multiple trails leading from it. This would be great to have a different trail for different days. It also is close to several loops that might be great for backpacking...

The Hoh trail only goes along the river, while the Sul Duc has options of falls, lakes, peaks, and divides to go to...

Also by a strange coincidence, Sol Duc has a group campsite as well. (limit 24 people)...

map of the section:
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/7580/12121x.png
Scale: [-------------------] = 5 miles

So all of that being said here is my cunning idea:

1. We have the official campground be the Sol Duc Campground.
2. We reserve the group site at Sol Duc. (max 24 people)
3. People can choose whether they want an individual site, or be part of the group site. They are all within walking distance of each other. That way we:
A. can accommodate large numbers of people
B. let people choose group or ind. (prices would be different)
C. have the group site as our "base-camp". We could all meet at the group site (even the ones who decided individual sites), for group meals/campfire/hang-out. It would also present a place to meet in the morning before we went on a hike.
D. The nice thing about having multiple trails and multiple destinations (falls, lakes, peaks) is that we can have short hikes/night hikes/backpacking all to different locations so people get to explore more of the park.

Prices:
Individual (14$)
Group (20$ a night + 1$ per person) (so if we get 20 people, the cost is 2$ per person per night)
Olympic NP Entrance Fee (15$ per vehicle) (good for 7 days)

thoughts?

Empty Glass 09-02-2011 09:12 AM

Well, I like this cunning idea. I did not know that Sol Duc has a group site, but I could see it accommodating us all. I also like the idea of being close to several trails. I know there are a few short hikes within reach of there and also a couple longer ones. (The Seven Lakes Loop route starts and ends at Sol Duc. I think it could make for a good one-night backpacking outing. And then of course there is that one trail I showed you Aketuan. :D) This one is also a lot more centrally located to other things in Olympic than the other site we were looking at (Kalaloch). That one may be right on the beach, but it's rather separated from the Hoh Rainforest, etc. Plus, less people is usually a good thing.

Yeah, I'm thinking this is a good idea.

Hell Yes 2$! Sounds great, good job with the researching.

Moco Loco 09-02-2011 07:19 PM

For real Sarah, I'm all for the group site.

:xD:

Special thanks to EG & Aketuan for the research!

Aketuan: I am for Sol Duc and the 2$ :xD:
EG: "less people is a good idea" - definitely! Not counting our 20+ group :P- but they are "our people" so that's fine with me!

Go Na'viya!

the details of the irc channel/server are in the first post. If you need help connecting, send me pm. Also, some of us are there often, so check it out if you want to anytime and say hi. :)

Speaking of which how does 10:00 PM PST next Friday work for everyone?

That would be 6:00 AM Saturday in UK and 7:00 AM Saturday in Spain...I think.

This would be the best time because any later, would be difficult for the people in/near USA while any earlier would be difficult for people in in/near UK...

I think we should try to figure out the length of the trip(maybe exact dates?) and campground.

Empty Glass 09-03-2011 06:48 AM

10:00 pm Pacific next Friday...works for me.

apache_blanca 09-03-2011 10:25 AM

to wake up before 7.00 am on Saturday?? :hmm:uuuuaaahhh... that's some sacrifice!:xD:
count me in.

mikkowilson 09-03-2011 07:07 PM

9PM Alaska. Works for me.

Until something comes up without warning.
