Default No kids in the sequel

About the sequel, hope Cameron does not fall for the temptation of placing a kid in the leading role. In some sequals of other films different directors have fallen for that temtation and the results have not always been so good. One can see Star Wars where the sequel (or prequel) The Phantom Menace had a ten years old Anakin as protagonist (and on top of that Jar Jar binks). Cameron self had a teenager as protagonist in Terminator 2, the result was OK but the kid story made the film somewhat childish in a couple of scenes.

So hopefully there will be grown ups as protagonists in Avatar 2.

What is your opinion about this?

I don't think the age of the main character(s) will impact whether or not it's a good story. All of the Harry Potter films are fairly watchable, for instance, despite Harry being a teenager in all of them.

In fact, he might be able to get an even more immersive film out of having a Na'vi child as a focus character.

There are already protagonists.

The harry potter series was designed around that premise in terms of protagonists; it's less good for something that wasn't.

Considering that Cameron has 140 years of "past" history and an indefinite amount of future time to use, I don't think he'll have a problem writing a story around different protagonists, if that's what he wants to do.

The 140 years only applies to Earth history. He's got infinite Pandora history to play with. He could easily tell us about the first Toruk Makto if he wants.

Oh yeah, I was forgetting. However, Sam and Zoe are both (AFAIK) signed up for the sequel, so he can't depart too far from 2154.

Only means part of the movie is set in their timescape. And even that could be flashbacks. Or (because it's science fiction) time travel.

Time travel: because it's science fiction I highly doubt that, but whatever.

I'm just discussing possibilities, not likelihoods.

Spin the wheel to find out what plot contrivance will allow time travel this time!

This is hard scifi. If FTL is out, time travel almost certainly is.

Depending how hard Cameron wants to be, they're the same thing. (Also, if FTL/time travel is a technological development humans don't have yet, then it becomes rather moot that it hasn't appeared yet.)

Did I say hard scifi can't have FTL/time travel? No. Both Mass Effect games are great examples of the former, as are the harder parts of ST (mainly TNG). Both are somewhere in the middle of the scale, only moderately softer than Avatar, in a scale where some people define 'hard scifi' exclusively as "could happen tomorrow", some as "Offers jsutification and reasonably works within understood physics" and anywhere inbetween.

Is the Avatar universe at a point of progress for it to happen? No.

Hmm. All this is true..but let's be honest..we would all probably be disappointed if jake and or Neytiri weren't back for the second movie..

With a good writer, there are an unlimited ways to continue the story.

Want to have a child at the centre?

You could have a story narrated by a Na'vi child from 2827 learning at school about the story of Jake and Neytiri and how they created a bridge between the human and the Na'vi, starting a peaceful relationship between them that lasted for centuries.

You could have a quarter of the film telling the story of Moat's childhood.

Won't happen, but there is no reason for it not to and if James Cameron wants it, anything is possible.
