Composer for sequels

Who is your choice?

Steven Price (Gravity, Fury).

Harry Gregson-Williams (The Martian, Prometheus) Here is Williams music from The Martian. Crossing Mars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trt9DzBuzCc

At the risk of opening up more comparisons to Ferngully: Alan Silvestri has been one of my favorite movie composers not named James Horner for a while now.

Ah, this is a tough one... I agree Harry Gregson-Williams might be able to do a good job, as well as James Newton Howard, Klaus Badelt, or possibly even Howard Shore.

Going to be interesting to see how things unfold!

I will just have to trust JC to make the right choice when the time has come, whom ever it is they have some huge shoes to fill.

^I agree.

I feel like Hanz Zimmer was a good guess. Gag guess, Danny Elfman! heh

James Newton Howard for sure. He's got the most experience in writing fantasy/sci-fi scores, and his style is in sync with Horner's. Plus he's up there with John Williams in terms of theme-building; personally I think he surpasses Williams.

James Newton Howard is great, I agree that'd be a solid candidate - I still feel the same about my list consisting of him, Harry Gregson-Williams, Klaus Badelt or Howard Shore :D

one of these three, James Newton Howard, Hans Zimmer, or Johann Johannsson who did the great music and sounds for the awesome 2016 film The Arrival.

Zimmer is a bit of a wildcard to me... One one hand if I listen to most of his recent stuff it seems like he would be a bad fit, but on the other hand he is undeniably competent and there's definitely some works of his that are absolutely magical - so it's possible he could indeed pull it off.

For the most part, I agree with you. However, I think the Gladiator soundtrack indicates that Zimmer could score Avatar sequels if they wanted him.

Hans Zimmer?????? No no no no no. Seriously.

I wish I had an idea here if only to give me hope. Horner was a huge and mostly unrecognized part of A1 and its impact. This is probably my first and greatest worry over sequels (ghost/guest writers are my second).

Simon Franglen Simon Franglen - IMDb should and probably will be involved. Hopefully, as he worked with Horner on the A1 score, he can help keep things Avatar.

Judging by his imdb page, it sounds more like he was more involved in the pop song that can sometimes be found on the soundtracks to Cameron movies. It mentions his work on "My heart will go on" and "I see you".

As for composers other than Zimmer, I don't know why you don't like Zimmer. As I mentioned before, his work on Gladiator gave me hope that he could do an Avatar soundtrack justice. Maybe James Newton Howard? Alan Silvestri? Those are the only other people I can think of off hand and Howard often works with Zimmer.

From what I can tell Franglen was an arranger for the actual score which is what I base that on.

Zimmer? His catalogue of droning, heavyhanded and [IMO] cold and empty feeling soundscapes. He has the skill but I'm not convinced he has "it". He's the man behind the "Inception sound" and his recent scores, mostly on Nolan films, have not impressed me at all. Or any of my family really. They are to me, the inverse of the Avatar score.

Gave Gladiator score a hit on youtube before posting my last post. My reaction was "kinda maybe".

Silvestri would be a better fit. In particular, The Abyss. That one to me feels halfway between a Horner score and a Williams score, like Jaws perhaps.
