Default Bah, I got banned from WyldRyde's Network.

Yeah, I just wanted to say you wont be seeing me on the #treeofsouls anymore, I got banned from the whole of wyldryde, it may have been some of the things we were discussing in #furry last night... I really have to learn to read the rules. Anyway, Just wanted to know if anyone had more info on it? I havent even got an explaination why I was banned

Must have been quite something you discussed to amount for banning. Then again that's only the assumption that you were banned due to it anyways.

Sounds quite dubious to be honest.

Generally, if you try and connect it will give a ban reason.
Just had a look through my logs but it looks like the ban was set when you weren't on rather than actually being disconnected from the network with the ban reason, so I don't know what it was.

...#furry? I do NOT want to know what goes on in there

Perhaps due to this?

Doesn't matter if you were the channel operator or not, but if an ircop wasn't preset in the channel, that means you must've triggered one of the previously mentioned killwords / killphrases.
Also, I edited out the URL you linked earlier because it contained your IP adress.

I don't want to be a purist but here goes.

People can't do anything with an IP address. The worst they can do (with success) is find out your ISP, host name, and the location the IP is hosted on.

They can't hack your computer. They can try but 99.99% of the times -- they fail. I know this and I hate it when people go like "OMG MY IP ADDRESS IS SHOWING!!!1111!1". But they can hack because your Firewall is open and you have open ports. Usually most computers warn you when your Firewall is open and most users do good and close it.

This myth of having someone's IP address was created as a "scare-tactic" in games from server administrators who collect the incoming IPs of players who join the game on their server. So if they messed up big time they would shout out "Hey player 1, I got your IP - don't mess with me or break the rules." Now a days you cannot see another person's IP because most game developers hide it before the vanilla software comes out. But for most popular games, that are not built by big game industries, that require a TCP Client/Server -- you can.

True in theory, assuming you aren't running anything vulnerable. Really though, the main risk in publicly displaying an IP address is either DDOS, or attacks via social engineering (primarily fake abuse reports to the ISP), although some may have other ideas, such as an obvious attack/portscan against people who WILL trace it, spoofing the sender IP as yours. Depending on the ISP, physical location and other details MAY be available, although this is not something just anyone could get from one.
It may not be as bad as some people think, but I'd still never give out my IP address publicly.

As for open ports, it depends... Without a good router and firewall, it IS possible, especially if any software is run with known exploits (even keeping things fully up to date isn't perfect as a zero-day (new) exploit COULD be used, but in order for that to happen you would really need to go out of your way to get some of the best to attack, it is definitely not something every script kiddie has access to). Realistically though, it's a lot easier to just DDOS someone.
Reporting a DDOS is different to actually finding the people though, if they are sensible (not launching it themselves but using botnets, even spoofing the sender IP is enough to avoid identification by almost everyone)
Trust me, I know plenty on this and have seen more than most people first hand.

Not saying anything WILL happen, but I'm always careful with my details like that.

There are certain "killwords" that will ban you for a certain amount of time if you say them, such phrases are for instance some of the stuff Nazi's liked to say, such as greeting Hitler. If you feel you have been unfairly banned, you can attempt to appeal the ban at WyldRyde IRC Network - Appealing Bans from WyldRyde

Edit: Oh... seems like ten people beat me to it, eh...

Hrrrmmm, Honestly and truthfully, I cant think of anything I've done wrong this morning (I was online this morning, I disconnected my mobile broadband, topped it up, logged back in and was banned.)

-> I was only on #treeofsouls this morning, and havent been on #furry since last night. Surely if I did something last night I would have been banned then?

Wow. Just wow. We were all discussing the same things, and me and the other people participating haven't been banned from anything. -___-

Yeah, if you have internet through cable (or some ADSL services) you could power cycle your modem and see if that fixes your problem, as banning is IP based, which is why you could log in through mibbit. If none of that works, you could set up a cache at a friends house, find a cache list, or use tor (not sure if WyldRyde will play nice with tor)

(if you want instructions just ask )
