I just thought of something looking at the woodsprite. Everyone knows that most animals have two 'queues' to connect with in the world. Look at the woodsprite.. it has two tentacles coming off the body with a slightly swollen area. Now... remember how they were all over Jake? What if those are like microscopic connectors? Like the threads from the Tree, they could gather information and internal workings of something that they land on. Same thing with the shorter 'legs' at the bottom of the main body. The have a swollen area much like the parts of a flower that accept pollen and could well have more receptors/transmitter nerves there. For want of a better name, the hair like extensions are cilia that gather information through the air or whatever they touch. In touching Jake, the entire mob of them downloaded enough information to pass on to Eywa/Pandora. Yes, I know that one of them landed on Neytiri's arrow tip, but just like any other connection, it is intelligent enough to choose not to get information. I was stunned by this revelation ... anyone else?

Wow... I had a similar theory, but I never had any evidence to back it up (t'was purely conjecture)... until reading this!!!
That's a fine analysis! Never thought of it that way. This is what I wrote before about it:Quote:

Most likely some kind of senses... I already theorised earlier that this is how they are attracted to the right places by following one or more senses and having a degree of control over their movements as demonstrated multiple times within the film.

I don't know about them meeting avatars... Judging from Neytiri's reaction, I'd say that seeing the otokirina is unusual by itself. We saw a few during the funeral, and, of course, the mob with Jake... but I don't think they go near the human compound. They seem to be deep jungle creatures that stay close to 'home'.
IF one had landed on Grace, I think she'd be more apt to take a sample than let it go. ![]() It's just hard to say exactly how they work until we get Cameron's novel to read and hope he adds some deep info about Pandora. ::sigh::

i never thought much about the Atokirina, but your explanation is very interesting. I always thought of them like jellyfish except they're not filled with water. Rather, they are hollow, so they can float around in the air ^_^ but they have nerves so they can sense when its appropriate to germinate.
