Debating is pointless.

All it does is cause arguments. Your opinions get you hated or praised.
Debating about it causes pain and misery. I hate debates. Just thought i'd say that.

That depends on what you're debating. Are you debating a person? or a subject? When the two get mixed, that's not debating. It's fighting.


EDIT: I find debating to be very informative. It gets you researching, discovering new points of view, and in some cases, gets you to change your mind. I know a few people here who think debating never, ever, ever changes anyone's mind, but I strongly disagree. I'm a living example of a person who has changed his mind on many occasions after debating a subject. But then, if someone has never debated in a formal setting with no animosity towards the other, then it does seem like it's impossible to change another's mind. But debating with an open mind is always the best way.

But sometimes, if you're trying to argue aginst someone who won't change their mind it does sprawl into an argument. It turns into something nasty and out of your control.

True. That's why on here, I try to discontinue things when I know the other person is getting angry... at least, that happens after I've said what I thought needed to be said.

Debating is not pointless, it is a form of mental gymnastics. HOWEVER, there are quite a few arguments that have happened, and it comes from people who almost always argue with each other, but who point fingers when people call them out on it. It's immature, and usually starts with someone getting angry at another's viewpoint. Not that this isn't typical for debates, but of this frequency, people need to "get over each other" so to speak...people know each other's viewpoints on certain topics in this site, so what's the point of arguing over them? The other person isn't going to change theirs in these scenarios, so just drop it and stay on subject.

Do what I do and don't take arguments seriously, therefore any disturbance becomes a non-issue. If the world decided that debating was pointless democracy would collapse and the jacobites would be in.

I agree with those that state that debating is not useless. Debating allows for the exchange of ideas. I think problems arise when a debate becomes a little too personal. I make it a rule not to debate anyone that makes it personal or purposely misinterprets my arguments (I have not experienced either of these here on ToS). Other than that, I think it is fine when a debate becomes heated, but as long as the ideas being presented are being critically looked at instead of the person(s) in the debate.

If people would just say their opinion and after that finishing - it would be quite more better as such situations often tend to go bad.

Btw. the only way a debate is not harmful is if you have your own death ray to protect yourself.. but thats just off topic, but it has to be said

HAHA, hey something I agree on. Debating is pointless. I'll tell you what isn't though. War. Chaos. Life is never fair, but death,..war,..chaos,..it's all fair. It's all GLORIOUS!!! I think people needs to just forget debating altogether, it's takes months or weeks to come to a conclusion. INstead, just fight it out and let the winners be the winners.

well, not fighting, if people are not sure they can peacefully coexist when debating, they should leave it be. Because if you fight constantly, you are soon running out of energy, better save the fighting energy for some serious battles which can NOT be avoided.
