Do you mean animated GIFs?
Unclear whether you'll run into size contraints, however. Animated GIFs take up a lot of space. Confusingly, the profile picture upload box says, "Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 64.0 KB (whichever is smaller)." ...which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Animated avatars are actually technically allowed and possible - but they have to be in a very small size as iron_jones said.
Besides, I would advise against using it - if you want an animated picture to represent yourself, the signature is good enough.

They are allowed, but the filesize is there for a reason as Eltu said - huge GIFs can be a pain outside of image threads where they are mostly expected. Of course, if one is really annoying and distracting, then that may be an issue, but there's no problem in principle with a small, subtle one.

Ok so I've tried using a gif that meets the size constraints, but its still doesn't work. I mean come on it's 16kb for god sake and it still isn't working! Maybe we could give special users bigger avatar sizes, say maybe... donators
